Do not scrape Glassdoor with browser automation unless you first obtain its express written permission. Glassdoor’s Terms of Use prohibit automated scraping, stripping, or mining of service data without that permission. The same terms describe ordinary use as personal and non-commercial unless Glassdoor separately agrees to commercial use. Browser automation can technically collect visible information, but that does not make collection permitted.
If you need company reviews, salary information, ratings, or job listings, define the fields and intended use, then ask Glassdoor to confirm an authorized route in writing. Until permission and scope are clear, use browser automation only on a site you own or are authorized to test.
What Glassdoor’s terms mean for browser automation
Glassdoor’s UK Terms of Use, revised February 17, 2024, prohibit introducing software or automated agents to scrape, strip, or mine service data without express written permission. The terms also say that service use is personal and non-commercial unless a separate commercial agreement applies. See the Glassdoor UK Terms of Use; the page says the terms may be updated, so check the applicable live terms for your jurisdiction before acting.

This is a contractual restriction stated in Glassdoor’s terms, not a technical limit. Public visibility, browser access, or the ability to automate a page is not itself permission. Applicable law and a user’s particular contract or jurisdiction can affect an individual analysis; this is not legal advice.
How to get an authorized route before collecting data
1. Specify exactly what you need
Before contacting Glassdoor, write down the companies and fields you want—such as reviews, salary data, ratings, or job listings—and the geography, date range, collection volume, frequency, and analysis purpose. Also state whether the results will be used commercially, retained, published, or redistributed. These details determine what permission would need to cover.
2. Request express written authorization
Ask Glassdoor whether automated access is allowed for the specific fields, purpose, frequency, storage period, and downstream uses you described. Do not treat a general response or permission for one activity as approval for a broader collection or commercial use. If the use is commercial, ask whether a separate commercial agreement is required.
3. Ask about current APIs or licensed data
Glassdoor’s terms refer to APIs and formal embedding features where Glassdoor makes them available. An API Terms of Use document exists, but its existence does not establish that API access is generally available, that reviews are included, or that it authorizes your intended use. Ask Glassdoor for current documentation, eligibility requirements, available fields, and written confirmation of permitted purposes.
Before choosing any authorized route, confirm its data coverage, geography, update cadence, volume limits, retention and redistribution rights, authentication requirements, maintenance burden, and total cost. Do not assume these details from the existence of API terms.

4. Do not proceed if permission is unclear or denied
Stop automated collection if authorization is unclear or refused. Do not use proxies, CAPTCHA workarounds, account workflows, or other methods to evade access controls. If you cannot establish an authorized Glassdoor route, limit your automation to a site you own or have permission to test.
Build browser automation only for a permitted site
For a site you control or are authorized to automate, Playwright recommends locators based on how users perceive a page—such as roles with accessible names, labels, and visible text. Its documentation explains that locators are central to auto-waiting and retry-ability, while CSS or XPath selectors tied to implementation details can break as the DOM changes. Use test IDs when the site owner provides them. See Playwright’s locator documentation.
The following example targets Playwright’s public demo page, not Glassdoor. It demonstrates locating visible page content and saving it locally; it is not a Glassdoor scraper.

node read-demo.js. The script opens the demo page, waits for a visible heading, prints its text, and closes the browser even if an error occurs.
Keep authorized collection accountable

Record the collection date, source, geography, field definitions, and permission basis alongside the data.

Validate values and preserve enough provenance to explain where they came from; do not treat user submissions as verified facts.

Troubleshooting Playwright on a permitted site
The locator cannot find an element
Check whether the page has finished loading and whether the accessible role, name, label, or visible text matches the live page. Prefer a user-facing locator or a test ID supplied by the site owner over a selector built around nested DOM structure.
The script times out waiting for content
Confirm that the target page is reachable and that the element is expected to appear. A navigation timeout and a locator timeout concern different stages: the page may load without the requested content becoming visible. Use bounded waits and report the failed step rather than silently treating missing content as a successful result.
The page layout changes and extraction breaks
Review the locator against the current page and replace brittle implementation-dependent selectors with accessible roles, labels, text, or owner-provided test IDs. For data work, validate expected fields and stop or flag the run when the page no longer matches assumptions.
