Owncast does not automatically relay an incoming stream to YouTube. It receives an RTMP broadcast and serves it to viewers on your Owncast site using HLS. To stream to Owncast and YouTube at the same time, configure your encoder or a separate relay to publish to both destinations. This guide covers installing and securing Owncast on a Linux VPS, connecting a broadcaster, planning capacity, and making the setup recover after interruptions.

How the Owncast and YouTube setup works

Think of this as two destinations, not one automatic forwarding step:

  1. Your encoder sends an RTMP stream to Owncast.
  2. Owncast processes that input and serves its own viewers through HLS.
  3. A separate output in your broadcasting software, or a relay that supports both destinations, sends a stream to YouTube.

Owncast’s documentation describes it as an RTMP destination and HLS server, not as a YouTube relay. Confirm that the software you choose can publish simultaneously and reconnect to each destination independently. Owncast’s Restream documentation describes sending RTMP to Owncast, but does not establish that a particular Restream plan currently supports the complete Owncast-plus-YouTube workflow or what it costs: Owncast’s Restream guide.

Choose and prepare an Indian VPS

An Indian server may reduce network distance for some broadcasters or viewers, but location alone does not guarantee stable delivery. Compare the server’s location and network terms with where your audience lives. The official Owncast provider page lists Linode/Akamai, Reclaim Cloud, and Vultr as options with pre-installed Owncast; that listing is not proof that a particular plan currently has an India location or suitable transfer terms: Owncast hosting options.

Before ordering, verify the following directly with the provider:

  • Whether the selected plan is actually hosted in India, and whether it includes a public IPv4 address.
  • Whether inbound TCP ports 8080 and 1935 can be opened through the provider firewall, or how your reverse-proxy arrangement will expose the services.
  • Sustained outbound throughput, monthly transfer allowance, how transfer is counted, and any overage charges.
  • CPU characteristics and storage, particularly if you plan to transcode several output qualities or keep backups.
  • Whether the provider permits long-running video streaming traffic.

No particular provider plan, India-region availability, or current price is established here; confirm those details before committing.

Install Owncast and secure its first run

Owncast offers a quick installer, manual release installation, containers, and pre-installed hosting-provider options. The quick installer can download FFmpeg if it is missing; a manual installation requires FFmpeg. Owncast cautions against running its remote installer as root and recommends inspecting remote scripts before executing them. Follow the current installation and system-service instructions for your chosen method: Owncast installation guide and system service guide.

  1. Install on a supported Linux host. Use the official instructions for the method you selected. Create a dedicated service environment rather than running the application with unnecessary privileges.
  2. Configure network access deliberately. Owncast’s default web interface port is TCP 8080 and its default RTMP ingest port is TCP 1935. Permit only the access your setup needs in both the VPS firewall and the operating-system firewall. A reverse proxy or different network configuration may change which ports are exposed publicly.
  3. Open the admin interface. Visit http://yourserver:8080/admin, replacing yourserver with the VPS hostname or address. The published default username is admin; the default admin password and stream key are both abc123.
  4. Change both credentials immediately. The admin password and stream key are separate credentials even though the defaults match. Use distinct, strong values and keep the stream key private. Do not leave a public service using the defaults.
  5. Set Owncast to start after reboot. Use the official system-service instructions and verify the service starts automatically when the host restarts.

Connect OBS or another RTMP broadcaster

Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default. Its default destination path is /live. In broadcasting software, the usual arrangement is to enter the RTMP URL as the server and the configured Owncast key in the separate stream-key field. Use your real host and port, for example rtmp://yourserver:1935/live. If your software accepts only one field, append the key to the path in the format expected by that software.

OBS setup

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream.
  2. Set the service to Custom.
  3. Enter rtmp://yourserver:1935/live as the server, substituting your Owncast hostname and any non-default port.
  4. Enter the Owncast stream key in the key field, then apply the settings.
  5. Start streaming and check the Owncast site for playback. If you also need YouTube, configure a separate output or a relay that supports both destinations; an Owncast destination by itself does not create that second output.

Owncast says RTMP-capable broadcasting software is generally compatible, but not every application has been tested. Its OBS instructions are at Owncast’s OBS guide.

Encoder settings to start with

  • Video: H.264 is a broadly compatible starting choice; use AAC audio.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval for Owncast.
  • Quality: Choose a resolution and bitrate the source connection and VPS can sustain. Owncast’s example starting points are 1080p30 at 4500 kbps or 720p30 at 3000 kbps; these are not guarantees for your hardware or network.
  • Connection: Prefer wired Ethernet for the broadcaster when practical. Owncast notes that Wi-Fi can add latency and instability.

YouTube has its own ingest requirements, which are separate from Owncast’s recommendations. Its live encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe frequency no longer than four seconds. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; recommended bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check the current official table when configuring the YouTube output: YouTube Live encoder settings.

Plan upload bandwidth, VPS egress, and CPU separately

A continuous stream has two different network loads: the broadcaster uploads to the VPS, then the VPS sends video out to Owncast viewers. If the same source also publishes directly to YouTube, that destination requires its own publishing path and capacity.

Broadcaster upload to the VPS

Owncast recommends planning for upload capacity of at least 1.5 times the stream bitrate to allow for fluctuations and overhead. For a 5000 kbps stream, its example calls for at least 7.5 Mbps of upload capacity. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee of stability: Owncast technical requirements.

VPS outbound bandwidth to Owncast viewers

For one quality, estimate peak VPS egress using bitrate in kbps × simultaneous viewers ÷ 1,000 = Mbps. At 5000 kbps and 25 simultaneous Owncast viewers, that works out to approximately 125 Mbps, before allowing practical headroom and protocol overhead. Total data transfer also accumulates with stream duration. This calculation concerns delivery from your VPS to Owncast viewers; it does not include a separate YouTube output.

CPU and multiple output qualities

Passing a stream through and transcoding it require different amounts of processing. Owncast’s rough guidance is that one CPU core can often handle one transcoded output quality at 30 fps, but actual load varies substantially with codec, bitrate, resolution, encoding preset, and host. Benchmark your chosen configuration rather than treating that estimate as a capacity guarantee. More viewers primarily increase bandwidth demand; transcoding work is driven by the number of output qualities.

Start with one output quality, check stream health, and add variants only when the initial setup works and the VPS has headroom. Multiple qualities can make playback more accessible to viewers with slower connections, at the cost of added encoding work. Owncast also documents S3-compatible object storage as an option to move video delivery away from the VPS; that adds a separate provider and configuration to manage: Owncast technical requirements and Owncast storage guide.

  • Restart the VPS and confirm Owncast starts without manual intervention.
  • Stop and restart the source encoder; confirm it reconnects and Owncast resumes playback.
  • Check Owncast and YouTube playback separately, because a healthy Owncast stream does not prove the YouTube output is live.
  • Test recovery after a network interruption and confirm the encoder or relay retries the destinations you use.
  • Monitor the host’s CPU, memory, disk, network throughput, and provider transfer usage over time.
  • Keep administrator credentials and stream keys private, and have a way to rotate them if exposed.

Owncast’s documentation advises that server, environment, network speed, and processing capacity differ. A continuous setup therefore depends on verifying the actual source, host, and destination behavior rather than assuming a configuration will recover automatically.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, rather than hosting a separate Owncast site, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream, and gives each account one free day with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.

Common problems and fixes

  • The RTMP connection is refused or times out: Check that the Owncast service is running, the hostname and port are correct, and TCP 1935 is permitted by both the host and provider firewalls. If using a reverse proxy or custom port, use that deployment’s actual ingest address.
  • OBS connects but Owncast shows no stream: Confirm the stream key and the /live path. Remember that the admin password and stream key are distinct settings; changing one does not change the other.
  • Owncast works but YouTube is offline: Owncast does not automatically forward its input to YouTube. Check that a separate YouTube output or compatible relay is configured, and verify YouTube’s stream key, ingest settings, and connection status independently.
  • Playback buffers or disconnects for viewers: Compare the stream bitrate with VPS outbound capacity and provider transfer/network limits. Reduce bitrate or audience load, increase available egress, or assess an appropriate delivery arrangement. Check whether CPU is saturated if transcoding is enabled.
  • The service disappears after a VPS reboot: Revisit the system-service setup and confirm the service is enabled at startup, then test another reboot.
  • A second or third quality overwhelms the host: Return to one output quality and check CPU headroom before adding variants; each transcoded output adds processing demand.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules

Owning or operating an Owncast server does not grant rights to the videos, music, or other material you broadcast. Use content you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-streaming policies before scheduling a continuous broadcast. Repeated or reused material can also affect channel eligibility and monetization; check the current rules that apply to your channel rather than assuming that a 24/7 format is exempt.
