Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteUse systemd to restart the Owncast server after it exits; use a separate managed encoder or relay service to restart a process that publishes video to YouTube. These are different processes and failure modes: restarting Owncast does not automatically restart a separate YouTube publisher.
First, identify which process needs to restart
“Owncast YouTube stream” can describe two different setups. Owncast is a streaming server, and its official service guide covers keeping the Owncast server process running. Owncast’s project description says broadcasting software that supports RTMP can send a stream to an Owncast instance. YouTube’s documentation puts a YouTube stream key in an encoder. The official Owncast materials cited here do not document Owncast forwarding its stream onward to YouTube, so treat a YouTube publishing relay as a separate process unless your setup specifically establishes otherwise. This distinction is based on the cited official documentation, not proof that no third-party integration exists.
- Owncast exits or crashes: create a systemd unit for Owncast.
- The YouTube encoder or relay exits: create a separate unit for that publisher.
- The process stays active but the stream stalls: a process restart policy alone may not detect or repair the stalled stream.
Restart Owncast automatically with systemd
Owncast’s documented service pattern is for Linux systems using systemd. Adapt the paths and account to your installation. The working directory should contain the Owncast binary and its data/ directory, and ExecStart should point to the full binary path.
1. Create a dedicated service account
Use a dedicated account such as owncast, not root. Owncast explicitly says, “Do not run Owncast as root.” Make sure the account can read the installation and write to Owncast’s data directory.

2. Create the unit file
Create /etc/systemd/system/owncast.service and adjust /opt/owncast if Owncast is installed elsewhere:
[Unit]
Description=Owncast
After=network.target
[Service]
Type=simple
WorkingDirectory=/opt/owncast
ExecStart=/opt/owncast/owncast
User=owncast
Group=owncast
Restart=always
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Restart=always tells systemd to restart the service when its process exits; RestartSec=5 sets the delay in this example to five seconds. This does not, by itself, detect a stream that has stopped while the process remains running.

3. Load the unit, start Owncast, and enable boot startup
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now owncast
systemctl status owncast
journalctl -u owncast -f
enable --now both starts Owncast immediately and configures it to start at boot. In the status output, look for active (running); use the journal output to inspect startup and restart errors. Owncast’s guide suggests loading the server on port 8080 to confirm it is serving. Whether that port is reachable from your network depends on your configuration and firewall.
Optional filesystem hardening
Owncast’s service guide gives an optional hardening example with settings including ProtectSystem=strict, ReadWritePaths=/opt/owncast, NoNewPrivileges=true, SecureBits=noroot, and ProtectHome=read-only. If you use a strict filesystem policy, allow writes to the actual Owncast data path; otherwise the service may be unable to write its data. Adapt the path to your installation.

Keep a separate FFmpeg publisher to YouTube running
If FFmpeg or another encoder publishes to YouTube, manage that publisher as its own service. Give it its own input, credentials, logs, and restart policy rather than assuming that restarting Owncast will restart it. YouTube says the encoder uses a stream key created in YouTube. Keep the key secret; if it is compromised, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room, but the encoder must then be updated with the replacement key.
Use the appropriate recovery layer
systemd can restart a publisher process that exits. FFmpeg also documents RTMP publishing with FLV output and a FIFO muxer pattern that attempts recovery from temporary network failures every second. That in-process recovery addresses certain temporary output failures; it does not guarantee recovery from invalid credentials, unavailable inputs, or every YouTube-side condition. These are separate layers, not substitutes for one another.

Illustrative systemd unit for a publisher
This is a unit shape, not a complete FFmpeg command. Replace the placeholders with the actual input and output options, and handle the stream key securely:
[Unit]
Description=YouTube publisher
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
EnvironmentFile=/etc/streamer/youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg <input-and-encoding-options> -f flv <YouTube-RTMP-output>
Restart=always
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Do not copy the angle-bracket placeholders as literal arguments. Choose the source, codecs, encoder settings, and output endpoint for your stream. FFmpeg supports RTMP variants including RTMPS; use the endpoint and settings provided to your encoder. Protect the environment file and avoid exposing the stream key in examples or logs.

Container and non-Linux deployments
The systemd unit above applies to Linux servers running systemd. Owncast directs Docker deployments to use Docker’s restart: unless-stopped policy instead of this systemd example. On macOS, the corresponding service manager is launchd. Use the restart mechanism for the deployment you actually run.
Troubleshoot in process order
- Check the intended service: run
systemctl status <unit>and confirm whether the intended process is active; inspect its exit status. - Follow the logs while reproducing the issue: run
journalctl -u <unit> -f. Look for startup errors, repeated exits, or output connection failures. - Verify the unit and permissions: confirm
ExecStart,WorkingDirectory, the service account, and file permissions. For Owncast, make sure its data directory is writable. - Check Owncast reachability: confirm the web service is listening on its configured port and that network or firewall settings permit access where needed.
- For a YouTube publisher, check its own inputs and credentials: confirm the source is available, the stream key is current, and encoder logs show a successful output connection.
- Separate a crash from a stalled stream: if the process remains active while video stops, a systemd process restart policy may not trigger. Diagnose the encoder, input, network, or output connection rather than assuming the service exited.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded video, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a home computer or server: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video streams to YouTube, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
