If you want hosted playback and scheduling without leaving your computer running, Restream’s Upload & Stream feature offers looping within stated limits. Restreamer is a different, self-hosted product from datarhei; its cited YouTube guide explains how to publish a stream but does not document a looping control.
First, distinguish Restreamer from Restream
The names are easy to confuse, but they refer to separate products. datarhei Restreamer is a self-hosted streaming server. Restream Upload & Stream is a hosted feature for uploading or using a recording and scheduling it as a prerecorded event. OBS Studio is local streaming software that encodes a source on your computer.

Loop a prerecorded video with OBS
- Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe entering these in the encoder. Keep the key private.
- Set up the scene. In OBS, create or select the scene you want to broadcast.
- Add the file. In the Sources panel, select + > Media Source, create or select a source, and browse to the local video file.
- Enable looping. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. OBS documents this property as off by default.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service and configure the stream key or connection method offered by your OBS version. Confirm that the preview appears in YouTube’s Live Control Room before starting the broadcast.
- Start and monitor. Start streaming in OBS, then check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Keep the computer, OBS, and network running for as long as the local stream must remain live.
Use a playlist instead of one file
OBS’s Media Source loops a file; it is not the playlist workflow. To use a playlist, add a VLC Video source instead. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Add the playlist files in the source properties and enable Loop Playlist. Test the sequence and transitions before relying on it unattended.
OBS lists supported media formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. That list is not a guarantee that every file will play correctly on every system, so test your particular file and setup.

What the two Restream products document
datarhei Restreamer: publish to YouTube
- Open Restreamer and select Publication Service.
- Choose the publication service and enter a valid streaming ID from YouTube.
- Save the configuration and start the stream.
- Check the Restreamer window for the connected YouTube Live bitrate, which the cited guide says appears there.
The guide was last updated approximately in 2023. It does not explain how to loop a file, so consult current datarhei documentation for that specific requirement. It also advises ending the stream on YouTube first after an event: interrupting it in Restreamer may prevent YouTube from saving the live stream to the DVR archive.
Restream Upload & Stream: schedule and loop hosted playback
Restream describes uploading a video or using a recording, scheduling a prerecorded event, and streaming while away from the computer. Its Help Center says single-video looping is a paid feature, allows up to 10 plays, and caps the resulting stream at 40 hours. According to the loop article, playlists do not automatically loop; you can duplicate playlist entries up to 40 videos as a workaround. Verify your account’s current plan, storage, and limits before building a schedule around it.

YouTube setup, reliability, and content rules
Check channel eligibility before choosing a workflow
YouTube says first-time livestream access may take up to 24 hours to enable. A channel needs to be verified and must not have livestream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. These are YouTube requirements, not features of OBS, datarhei Restreamer, Restream, or StreamNeo. See YouTube’s live-streaming prerequisites.
Allow network headroom and monitor the stream
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% room in upload bandwidth. Test the stream, preview it in Live Control Room, and monitor it while live; a network disruption can break a stream. A wired Ethernet connection may be useful if available, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not prescribe a cable category. Neither a local encoder nor a hosted workflow guarantees uninterrupted service.

Understand archiving and monetization separately
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder livestream instructions. That archive guidance is separate from whether a stream loops or remains live longer.
Replaying a video does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s channel monetization policies, updated July 15, 2025, address live streams and say highly repetitive or mass-produced content with little creative, educational, or other value may be ineligible. Copyright and permission to use the video are separate issues: make sure you have the necessary rights for the video and any music or other material it contains. A loop is not automatically prohibited or automatically monetizable.

Common problems and fixes
- The video stops at the end instead of restarting: In OBS, reopen the Media Source properties and enable Loop; it is off by default.
- The playlist source is missing: Install VLC, then reopen OBS and add a VLC Video source. Its playlist loop control is separate from Media Source’s Loop property.
- YouTube does not show a live preview: Check that the stream URL and key are entered correctly, the encoder is connected, and the channel has livestream access. YouTube says first-time access can take up to 24 hours.
- The stream drops or becomes unstable: Check upload capacity and leave the 20% bandwidth headroom YouTube recommends. Test and monitor the stream; no workflow removes network risk.
- A scheduled Restream event will not loop as expected: Confirm that the account has access to the paid feature and that the video and resulting duration are within the stated limits. For playlists, Restream’s documented workaround is to duplicate entries rather than rely on automatic playlist looping.
- A datarhei Restreamer stream is not repeating the source: Its cited YouTube guide only documents publication setup, not looping. Check the current documentation for the configured source and playback method rather than assuming the publication step enables looping.
- YouTube does not retain the expected archive: For the datarhei workflow, the guide advises ending the stream on YouTube before interrupting it in Restreamer. Also note YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours.
