After it is installed, load a page, click the extension’s toolbar button, and find the saved file in Firefox’s downloads folder. If you need SingleFileZ-style self-extracting output, select it in SingleFile’s File format options.
Why install SingleFile instead of SingleFileZ?
The SingleFileZ project says, “It’s the end of an adventure, but that’s not bad news! SingleFileZ has been completely merged into SingleFile.” It directs users who want self-extracting files to SingleFile’s File format options and says existing settings can be imported. SingleFileZ project
A SingleFileZ listing remains on Mozilla Add-ons, but it reports version 1.4.45, last updated February 15, 2024. That is listing metadata, not evidence that SingleFileZ remains the actively maintained choice. For a current Firefox installation, use SingleFile. SingleFileZ on Mozilla Add-ons
Install SingleFile in Firefox on Ubuntu
- Open Firefox and go to SingleFile on Mozilla Add-ons.
- Use Firefox’s add-on install control on the listing and confirm the browser’s prompt if one appears.
- Wait for Firefox to finish adding the extension. The project’s documented Firefox install route is Mozilla Add-ons; it does not specify a separate Ubuntu package or terminal command. SingleFile project README
The same Firefox steps apply on Ubuntu as on other supported desktop systems. The available project instructions do not document Ubuntu-specific distribution variants or a distinct Ubuntu setup path.

Save a webpage for offline viewing
- Open the page you want to preserve and wait until it has fully loaded.
- Click the SingleFile toolbar button. The extension captures the current page.
- Look for the saved file in Firefox’s configured downloads folder, which is the documented default destination. SingleFile project README
For alternatives to capturing the current tab, SingleFile’s context menu supports saving selected content, a selected frame, or multiple tabs. These options are useful when you do not want to save an entire page or need to capture more than one open tab.
Choose the self-extracting file format
If you installed SingleFile because you want the self-extracting format associated with SingleFileZ, open SingleFile’s options and look for File format. Choose the format you want there; the SingleFileZ project points users to that setting in its successor. The legacy SingleFileZ FAQ describes the .zip.html filename convention and local-file viewing behavior, but do not assume every interactive site will work exactly as it did online after saving. Manual installation if Mozilla Add-ons is unavailable
SingleFile’s README also documents manual installation from a downloaded project ZIP and refers Firefox users to Mozilla’s temporary add-on installation instructions. Mozilla Support says a saved XPI can be installed through the Add-ons Manager’s gear menu. These are alternatives, not the normal first choice; follow the project README and Mozilla’s current instructions for the exact files and workflow rather than using an unsupported developer-mode workaround. Troubleshooting
- The old SingleFileZ listing is available, but you are unsure whether to install it: use SingleFile, the successor named by the SingleFileZ project. Its listing’s reported update date is February 15, 2024.
- The saved file is not where expected: check Firefox’s configured download location; SingleFile documents that folder as its default destination.
- The saved page is incomplete: wait for the page to finish loading before clicking the toolbar button. A saved page is an offline copy, not a guarantee that every interactive feature or local-file resource will behave as it does online.
- You cannot find the self-extracting option: open SingleFile’s options and inspect File format, the setting identified by the successor project.
- You are trying to install from a local file: use the official project’s manual-install directions and Mozilla’s Add-ons Manager guidance for an XPI; do not treat an Ubuntu terminal command as required, since the cited instructions do not provide one.
