If Save Page WE will not save a page in desktop Chrome, first make sure the extension is enabled and allowed to access that site. If it can access the page but the saved file is missing or Chrome shows a download error, troubleshoot Chrome’s download destination and the specific error separately. The right fix depends on what Chrome displays; there is no single cause that applies to every installation.

1. Check that Save Page WE is enabled

  1. In desktop Chrome, open Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Find Save Page WE and confirm its switch is on.
  3. If it is enabled but not on the toolbar, open Chrome’s Extensions menu and pin it.

If the extension is disabled or marked unsupported, inspect its status on the Manage extensions page before trying other fixes. On a work or school device, an administrator may block extensions or control their settings; contact the administrator if Chrome says the browser is managed.

These toolbar and management instructions are for desktop Chrome; they do not establish the same workflow for mobile Chrome. See Google’s instructions for installing and managing extensions.

2. Allow Save Page WE to access the page

  1. Open Chrome’s Extensions menu.
  2. Point to This can read and change site data for Save Page WE.
  3. Choose the narrowest access level that works: when you select the extension, automatically on the current site, or automatically on all sites.

You can also add site access from Save Page WE’s Details page in Extensions > Manage extensions. Do not assume that all-sites access is required: the extension listing does not specify one permission level that every workflow or version needs.

Broad access has a real privacy trade-off. Chrome warns that an extension allowed to access data on all websites may read, request, or change data on pages you visit. Grant only the access you need, and review Chrome Web Store guidance on extension permissions.

3. If access is allowed, check how the page is saved

Save Page WE’s Chrome Web Store listing describes an old and a new save method with different trade-offs. The older method remembers the last save location but may fail on some pages. The listing gives Yahoo in Chrome 84 or later as an example. The newer method can save pages the old method cannot, but does not remember the last save location. The listing for version 33.9 says the extension automatically selects a method; the listing may change over time.

Method Last save location Page compatibility described in the listing
Old Remembers it May fail on some pages
New Does not remember it Can save pages the old method cannot

If only a particular page fails, try the other method if the extension’s available settings let you select it. This is a diagnostic option, not a guarantee that every element or dynamically loaded part of a page will be captured perfectly. The listing also describes starting a save with the toolbar button, a context-menu action, or Alt+A; Alt+C cancels a save. If clicking the toolbar icon appears to do nothing, try another listed save action.

See the Save Page WE Chrome Web Store listing for its current description and available settings.

4. Distinguish a page-permission problem from a download failure

Save Page WE produces an HTML file through Chrome’s download handling. If the extension appears to start but the file does not arrive, check Chrome’s Downloads settings for the destination folder and whether Ask where to save each file before downloading is enabled. Choose a folder you can access.

Read Chrome’s error message before changing extension permissions. A download error does not, by itself, mean the extension lacks permission to read the page.

Chrome message What to try
Insufficient permissions or System busy Cancel and retry. If a file link is involved, try Save link as. Save to a folder you can access, such as Desktop or Documents.
Disk full Free space on the drive used for downloads, then retry.
Download blocked Review your security settings and determine what blocked the download before retrying.
Needs authorization or Forbidden The file’s website or server is denying access. These messages do not prove that Save Page WE lacks Chrome site permission.

For other messages, use Google’s guide to fixing file download errors and follow the remedy for the exact error shown.

5. Repair only if Chrome identifies corruption

If Chrome marks Save Page WE as corrupted, open Extensions > Manage extensions, find the marked extension, and select Repair. If Chrome instead marks it unsupported, its help page describes a limited-time temporary re-enable and advises finding an alternative before the extension is disabled permanently. An enterprise administrator may control this status on a managed browser.

If Chrome does not identify the extension as corrupted or unsupported, repair is not an established fix for a page-specific failure. Start with the extension’s enabled state, site access, save method, and download destination instead. See Chrome’s extension management guidance.

If you need a screenshot rather than a saved HTML page, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request returns an image or PDF; for example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses include page-verdict and billing headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
