For a new install, choose SingleFile. SingleFileZ is no longer a separate project: it has been merged into SingleFile. If you want the self-extracting, ZIP-compatible format associated with SingleFileZ, select it in SingleFile’s File format options. For an ordinary saved webpage that is simpler to open, use SingleFile’s regular HTML format.

SingleFile vs SingleFileZ: what each name means now

SingleFile is the current extension

SingleFile is a browser extension and command-line tool for saving a webpage as one HTML file. Its project lists support for Chrome, Firefox desktop and mobile, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Vivaldi, Brave, Waterfox, Yandex Browser, and Opera. Availability and installation steps vary by browser, so use the appropriate browser store or the project’s current installation guidance.

SingleFileZ is the former separate extension

The official SingleFileZ project says it has been completely merged into SingleFile. SingleFile now offers the self-extracting file format that was associated with SingleFileZ, and former SingleFileZ users can import their settings. Older search results and add-on listings may still present SingleFileZ as a standalone extension; Mozilla’s listing is historical distribution information, not evidence that it remains a separate current project.

Which file format should you choose?

Decision Regular SingleFile HTML Self-extracting format
What it is A single HTML page with page resources embedded for saving and offline viewing. A self-extracting HTML file that is also a ZIP-compatible archive containing the page resources.
Choose it when You want the most straightforward saved webpage to open. You want the resources packaged in a ZIP-compatible container or need to extract them as an archive.
Opening considerations The simpler option when you want an ordinary HTML document. JavaScript must be enabled to open it. Chrome has additional restrictions when opening these files from the filesystem.
Saving speed and size Default processing options favor smaller pages and can make saving slower. Its defaults also favor smaller files and can slow saving; options can trade file size or completeness for speed.

How to select the self-extracting format in SingleFile

  1. Install the current SingleFile extension from the appropriate browser store.
  2. Open SingleFile’s options and find File format.
  3. Select the self-extracting format if you need the ZIP-compatible container; otherwise, leave the regular HTML format selected.
  4. If you are moving from SingleFileZ, import your existing settings where supported, then check the selected format before saving a page.

For Chrome users, check the self-extracting format’s local-file opening requirements before making it your default. The older SingleFileZ FAQ notes that opening these files directly from the filesystem in Chrome requires a command-line switch or installing the extension. That restriction concerns local files; serving the file from a server avoids those particular local-file restrictions.

What neither format guarantees

A saved SingleFile page is a useful copy, not a guaranteed exact or permanent reproduction of every site. Dynamic maps, carousels, and expandable controls may depend on JavaScript. SingleFile removes scripts by default because they can change page rendering and may not work offline. Some domains restrict browser extensions, and resources can be missed depending on how a page loads.

For professional or academic web archiving, SingleFile’s FAQ says it is not intended as a professional archiving tool and points to tools based on the WARC specification. If you need a preservation workflow with archival requirements, choose a tool designed for that purpose rather than treating a single-file save as an archival record.

Privacy and extension permissions

SingleFile needs access to open tabs and page contents so it can capture them. Its privacy policy says processing and storage are local by default and that the extension does not collect data. The same policy describes cases where data is sent to a destination selected by the user, including Google Drive, Dropbox, GitHub, WebDAV, S3, a REST form API, settings synchronization, or proof-of-existence hashes. Review enabled integrations and destinations if you need to know whether a particular workflow sends data off your device.

When ScreenshotNeo is a better fit

SingleFile saves webpages as files for offline viewing; ScreenshotNeo is a different kind of tool: a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Try ScreenshotNeo first if your goal is to capture a clean image or PDF through an API or an AI agent rather than save a page as offline HTML. It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. Its MCP server includes tools for taking screenshots, getting page information, and capturing PDFs.
