The official documentation reviewed does not confirm a template token for copying that literal URL filename.
Choose what you mean by “original filename”
There are two different names a person may mean: the document title shown by the webpage, and the final path segment of its URL (for example, report-2025.html in https://example.com/files/report-2025.html). They can be different. SingleFile’s documented {page-title} template token uses the webpage title; the documented material does not establish a token that copies the URL’s final segment. The maintainer’s filename-template example shows {page-title} ({date-locale}).html.
Set SingleFile to use the webpage title
- Open the SingleFile toolbar button’s context menu and choose the extension options. The project README describes the option as Manage extension in Firefox and Options in Chrome; labels may differ in other browsers or releases. SingleFile’s README
- In the options page, find File name > template.
- Enter
{page-title}.htmlto save using the page title, or{page-title} ({date-locale}).htmlto include a date, following the maintainer’s documented example. - Save a page and check the resulting filename. The default destination is the browser’s configured downloads folder.
SingleFile saves a complete webpage as a single HTML file and is also available as a command-line tool. Its project site lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari versions; exact settings can vary by browser and release. See the SingleFile project site.
If you need the literal filename from the URL
Do not assume {page-title} preserves the URL filename: it names the output from the page title. The official README and maintainer example cited above do not confirm a URL-filename template token. Check the help bundled with your installed SingleFile version for any version-specific option before relying on exact URL-name retention. The extension’s available output formats are a separate setting from its filename template; changing one does not establish or change the other.

Troubleshoot unexpected filenames
- The filename is the title, not the URL name: that is the documented behavior of
{page-title}. If the URL’s final segment is required, consult the installed version’s help; the cited documentation does not establish a token for it. - The options label differs: the README gives different labels for Firefox and Chrome, and browser variants or later releases may differ. Open the extension’s own options/help rather than assuming every browser has the same UI.
- The download location is unexpected: SingleFile uses the browser’s configured downloads folder by default, so check the browser’s download settings.
- A save dialog changes the flow: review browser download settings and the extension help for your installed version. A Chromium fork has reported an interaction with “Ask where to save each file before downloading,” but that is not established as a universal SingleFile behavior.
