You generally do not add a YouTube stream key to Owncast. Owncast accepts an incoming broadcast using an Owncast stream key; YouTube uses a separate key entered in your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. The official setup instructions reviewed here document those two configurations separately—not Owncast forwarding a stream to YouTube.
Know which stream key belongs where
Owncast’s stream key authorizes broadcaster software to send video to your Owncast server, typically at its /live endpoint. It is separate from the Owncast admin password, and Owncast’s Stream Keys settings let you manage multiple keys. YouTube’s key belongs in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. YouTube describes stream keys as password-like, so treat yours as a credential, not as a public stream address.
Adding a YouTube key under Owncast’s Configuration > Server Setup > Stream Keys does not make it a YouTube destination: that Owncast area manages keys used to send video into Owncast.
Send a stream from OBS to Owncast
- Make sure your Owncast server is running and reachable. Use the RTMP address and port configured for your instance. The commonly shown address format is
rtmp://<your-server>:1935/live; the port may differ if your server is configured differently. - Get an Owncast key. In the Owncast admin, open Configuration > Server Setup > Stream Keys and use a key managed there.
- Configure OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose Custom, put the Owncast RTMP address in the server field, and enter the matching Owncast key in the stream-key field.
- Start streaming and check Owncast. Confirm that the incoming stream appears in your Owncast instance. These are configuration steps described in the official setup guides, not a claim of independent testing.
Send a stream from an encoder to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and obtain the stream URL and stream key for the scheduled or current stream.
- In your encoder’s YouTube destination settings, select the YouTube preset if one is available, or enter the YouTube stream URL and key in the appropriate fields.
- If your encoder supports it, choose the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, which encrypts the connection in transit.
- Keep the key out of screenshots, public tutorials, chats, and issues. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room under the Stream tab, then replace the old key in the encoder.
Can Owncast forward a stream to YouTube?
The official Owncast and YouTube instructions cited here do not establish that Owncast can act as an outbound YouTube relay, nor do they document Owncast securely storing a YouTube stream key for that purpose. Do not assume that entering a YouTube key in Owncast’s stream-key settings will publish to YouTube.

If you need the same broadcast to reach Owncast and YouTube, first check the current documentation for the encoder or relay you plan to use. It should explicitly support multiple destinations and explain where each platform’s key is stored, who can access it, and whether each destination connection can use RTMPS. Also consider the encoder’s upload capacity and the server or host load. The sources here do not validate a particular simultaneous-publishing workflow.
Protect and rotate both credentials
- Keep the YouTube key in the encoder’s credential field; do not expose it in public URLs, shell history, source-controlled configuration, logs, or screenshots.
- Use RTMPS when the encoder supports it. Encryption protects the stream connection in transit; it does not protect a key displayed in an exposed encoder interface, copied into a log, or accessed through a compromised host.
- If the YouTube key may be compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it in YouTube Live Control Room under the Stream tab. Update the encoder afterward.
- If an Owncast key is exposed, revoke or rotate that Owncast key separately in Owncast’s Stream Keys settings. Changing the YouTube key does not replace the Owncast credential, or vice versa.
