If ArchiveBox reports a YouTube media-extractor error, first identify which extractor it actually ran and read the complete error output. Then check ArchiveBox’s resolved dependencies and whether the URL opens in a normal browser. A failed video download does not necessarily mean ArchiveBox failed to save the page context, and an error seen in one setup does not establish a universal YouTube failure.
First identify what failed
Separate an error adding or parsing the URL from an error during media extraction. Find the exact URL and the extractor step that failed in ArchiveBox’s standard output or Web UI. ArchiveBox recommends checking dependencies, confirming that a link is visitable in a normal browser, and inspecting the output for the reported URL and failure (ArchiveBox troubleshooting).
- If ArchiveBox could not add or parse the URL, investigate the URL and the add operation before diagnosing a YouTube downloader.
- If the URL was accepted but the media step failed, record which extractor ran and its exact error.
- If the page was archived but no playable media file appears, treat that as a media-extraction failure, not proof that the entire page was uncapturable.
Check ArchiveBox’s actual extractor and dependencies
ArchiveBox’s current documentation describes media extraction through yt-dlp or youtube-dl, with runtime dependencies resolved through abxpkg (ArchiveBox documentation). Check the environment ArchiveBox uses, rather than assuming a downloader installed on your host is also available inside a container.
- Run
archivebox versionto see ArchiveBox’s version and installed dependency information. - Run
archivebox installin the deployment environment to install or resolve its runtime dependencies. - On the supported bare-metal path, check the environment manager and tool installation with
uv --versionanduv tool list, then inspectarchivebox version. - Note whether the run selected
yt-dlporyoutube-dl, and capture the version reported for that executable.
Use the installation route for your actual deployment. A host-level package check can be misleading if ArchiveBox runs in a container or a separate managed environment.

Verify the URL and ordinary access
Open the intended video URL in a regular browser and confirm that it is the correct page and reachable from the machine or network where the archive runs. Browser access is a useful check, not proof that a media extractor can download the video: the extractor’s own output is what identifies whether the URL format or site behavior is the issue.
yt-dlp cautions that support cannot always be inferred from a site appearing on a supported-sites list: URL schemes and site behavior can change. Its practical advice is to run the tool and inspect the output (yt-dlp FAQ).
Save diagnostic details before changing anything
Keep the complete ArchiveBox output and note the exact URL, ArchiveBox version, selected extractor and its version, and deployment type (for example, container or bare metal). The yt-dlp FAQ recommends including verbose output generated with yt-dlp -Uv when reporting a problem. Use that diagnostic with the rest of your command if testing the extractor directly; do not discard the original ArchiveBox error and replace it with a guessed cause.

Match the response to the error
Extractor name or version points to the next check
If ArchiveBox is invoking youtube-dl rather than yt-dlp, or the dependency information differs from what you expected, verify the resolved runtime and installation before trying unrelated changes. A historical ArchiveBox issue, opened on February 22, 2023, documented one YouTube failure in a Docker Compose setup using youtube-dl: Unable to extract uploader id (ArchiveBox issue #1045). It is an example of why the selected extractor and its version matter, not evidence that this is the cause of current failures.
403 or access-related errors need evidence-specific handling
The yt-dlp FAQ discusses 403 errors and cookie or IP considerations for some sites. Apply those suggestions only if the actual error and current yt-dlp guidance fit your case. Cookie handling is not a universal fix for YouTube extractor errors.
Do not treat every extractor error as the same problem
A changed URL format, unavailable page, dependency issue, or site-specific access response can produce different failures. The exact extractor output is needed to distinguish them. Avoid assuming a particular version update, user-agent change, cookie import, or host move will solve the problem when the error does not point to it.

Retry an already-indexed URL deliberately
ArchiveBox normally processes new links rather than downloading an already-indexed URL again. After correcting a suspected cause, explicitly request another attempt with the documented form:
archivebox add --no-only-new URL
Replace URL with the target address. This requests a retry; it does not guarantee that media extraction will succeed. Do not move or delete parts of the archive tree as a shortcut: ArchiveBox warns that separating database state from snapshot files can cause problems (ArchiveBox troubleshooting).

Preserve page context even if video extraction fails
ArchiveBox supports multiple archive methods and recommends combining methods when a site does not work effectively with every method. A page or screenshot capture may retain useful context even when the media extractor fails. It is not a downloaded or playable copy of the video. ArchiveBox’s documentation describes its available archive methods and media dependencies (ArchiveBox documentation).

Does an ArchiveBox extractor error mean the YouTube page was not archived at all?
No. The media download can fail while another archive method preserves page context. That context is not a playable video file.
Will retrying with archivebox add --no-only-new URL guarantee a video download?
No. It requests another capture attempt for an already-indexed URL; success still depends on the underlying cause and extractor.
