First check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview and the Owncast player, then verify the encoder’s separate destinations and keys. If both outputs fail, check the source format and Owncast’s transcoder logs.
Find where the video disappears
Compare three points: the encoder’s source or preview, the Owncast player, and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. This is a diagnostic sequence, not a guaranteed root-cause test.
- Owncast plays video, YouTube preview is black or absent: Start with the YouTube destination, selected stream, key, and encoder output routing.
- Both Owncast and YouTube are black: Check the source and encoder settings, then whether Owncast can transcode and serve the incoming video.
- YouTube preview shows video but the published player is black: The encoder has reached YouTube with video, so avoid changing Owncast or ingest transport first. Check the selected YouTube stream and its live state in Live Control Room.
Owncast receives the source and turns it into HLS segments for its viewers; YouTube has its own ingest path. A connection to one service does not establish that the other is receiving the same feed.
Verify both streaming destinations and keys
Owncast destination
Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default, though the port can be configured. Its stream key is accepted on the /live/ path. A typical encoder setup uses rtmp://yourserver:1935/live as the server URL and the Owncast key in the separate stream-key field. If the encoder has no separate key field, the full endpoint is rtmp://yourserver:1935/live/<your-stream-key>. Confirm that the configured port and key match your Owncast instance.

YouTube destination
In the encoder, separately enter the stream URL and key for the intended YouTube stream from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not assume an encoder’s Owncast connection also sends a copy to YouTube: check its actual output routing and credentials. For a scheduled YouTube stream, wait for the Live Control Room preview and then click Go live.
Set a compatible video and audio format
For the most reliable Owncast compatibility, use H.264 video and AAC audio. Owncast may recognize other formats, but does not assure the same transcoding and playback compatibility. Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; Owncast recommends not leaving it on automatic.

Owncast publishes these example broadcast settings. They are examples, not universal YouTube requirements or a guarantee that a particular server or connection can sustain them.

Choose a setting your Owncast server can process and your upload connection can sustain. If you change a setting, restart the encoder output and check both previews again.

Read Owncast logs for transcoding failures
If the Owncast server log does not explain the video failure, inspect data/logs/transcoder.log around the time it occurs. Look for initialization or output errors, and check that the server’s FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder. Owncast’s hardware-codec guidance cautions that an encoder appearing in a list does not prove its drivers and hardware are configured correctly; it suggests FFmpeg 4.1.5 or newer, but that is a suggestion rather than a hard requirement.
A 2021 Owncast GitHub issue illustrates why “connected” and “video successfully transcoded” are different: it recorded an inbound connection followed by HLS output errors, with a note that the FFmpeg build might not support the selected libx264. That historical report is an example, not a diagnosis of a current installation.

Check RTMPS only when YouTube ingest is the problem
If YouTube’s preview never appears and the encoder reports a connection or SSL error, confirm the protocol and server URL match the settings shown in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP over TLS/SSL; use it if the encoder supports it and copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room. YouTube also says port 443 may help with certain SSL errors. If YouTube preview already shows video, changing ingest transport is unlikely to be the right first step for a black published player.
