The country matters for where your server is located, not for a separate ArchiveBox installation procedure. The commands below follow the project’s documentation; they are not a report of a tested deployment.
Check your VPS before installing
ArchiveBox’s installation documentation lists Ubuntu on amd64 and arm64 as supported. It recommends at least 2 GB of RAM; 1 GB is the stated minimum. For full default crawls on a 1 GB VPS, the project advises configuring at least 4 GB of swap. These are project recommendations, not guarantees that every collection or crawl workload will fit those limits. See the ArchiveBox installation guide.
- Architecture: confirm the VPS image is Ubuntu and its CPU architecture is
amd64orarm64. - Memory: choose 2 GB RAM or more if practical; if using 1 GB for full default crawls, configure at least 4 GB swap.
- Storage: choose capacity based on how much content you plan to archive. The cited project guidance does not specify a disk-size target for a given collection size.
The installation guide recommends filesystems with compression and/or deduplication, such as ZFS or BTRFS, as an efficiency measure—not as an installation requirement. It also says Chrome-based archiving can be disabled with CHROME_ENABLED=False or the USE_CHROME alias to reduce crawl-time memory pressure.
Install with Docker Compose (recommended)
ArchiveBox recommends Compose for its setup and update experience and for including project extras. The official Docker deployment uses Docker Engine or Docker Desktop with Docker Compose v2 and publishes images for Linux amd64 and arm64. On the VPS, connect to Ubuntu over SSH as a user with permission to run Docker commands, then follow the official Docker deployment repository.

Create a working directory and download the project’s Compose file:

In a browser, open

Add a first URL from the Compose directory:

Use the current Compose file and repository instructions rather than assuming the file or image configuration will never change. Compose is the project’s preferred setup, but following these installation steps alone does not establish that a service is secured for public internet exposure.
Install without Docker: Ubuntu apt package
The project also documents an Ubuntu apt route. Its current instructions add a third-party repository on the dev channel; the package is described as a thin wrapper around the normal Python installation flow. Check the live installation instructions before running package commands because the channel and steps may evolve.

archivebox add 'https://example.com'archivebox init creates the collection. The documented sudo archivebox install step installs runtime dependencies for enabled extractors, using apt for missing system dependencies while preserving ownership of the user-owned collection.
Alternative: install with uv
The installation guide also documents a uv-based Python installation using Python 3.13 and an explicit prerelease range. Because the version range can change, copy the current command from the live installation guide rather than using a stale version pin. After installing the package, initialize a collection and resolve its runtime dependencies:

archivebox installThe get.archivebox.io setup shortcut described by the project invokes the uv installation script; it does not by itself initialize a collection, install runtime dependencies, or start a server.
Reach the admin page and understand deployment limits
The Quickstart directs users to open /admin/ on the hostname or IP used to reach ArchiveBox and finish the setup wizard. The project’s cited Quickstart and installation material does not fully specify a production firewall, TLS, reverse-proxy, or backup configuration. Do not treat a successful Compose startup as a complete public-facing deployment plan; consult current operational guidance before exposing the service or deciding how to protect and back up its data.

- Compose reports an unsupported architecture: check that the Ubuntu VPS is
amd64orarm64, the architectures listed for the official Linux images. - The service does not become ready: inspect its container output with
docker compose logsfrom the directory containing the Compose file, and check the current repository instructions and VPS resources before retrying. - The admin page does not open: verify you are using the VPS hostname or IP with the
/admin/path and that the service started. The cited Quickstart does not provide a complete network-access or firewall troubleshooting procedure. - Crawls run short of memory: the project recommends 2 GB RAM or more; its specific guidance for full default crawls on a 1 GB VPS is at least 4 GB swap. Disabling Chrome with
CHROME_ENABLED=False(orUSE_CHROME) can reduce crawl-time memory pressure. - The first archive command fails after package installation: on the apt or uv routes, initialize the collection and run the documented dependency installation step before adding URLs.
