For one Indian news article you want to share, start with the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine Save Page Now: submit the article URL and, if capture succeeds, keep the public snapshot link. For a collection you want to manage yourself—such as a list of links, bookmarks, or feeds—ArchiveBox is the better fit, provided you can host it, maintain its storage, and back it up. Neither service guarantees a complete capture of every publisher page, paywall, or dynamic feature.

Choose by what you need to keep

Need Better fit Why
Save one article and share a public snapshot Wayback Machine Save Page Now It accepts an individual page URL and returns an archive URL if the capture succeeds.
Build and control a collection of saved links ArchiveBox You operate the collection and can import URL lists, bookmarks, browser history, or feeds.
Keep more than one local capture format ArchiveBox Depending on capture methods and configuration, it can produce HTML, PDF, PNG, JSON, WARC, metadata, and extracted article text.
A recurring organizational crawl with support Internet Archive Archive-It Archive-It is a distinct paid subscription service for organizations, not the one-page Save Page Now workflow.

These tools have different operating models: the Wayback Machine offers a low-maintenance public snapshot; ArchiveBox gives you local collection control but makes you responsible for installation, storage, updates, and backups.

Save one article with the Wayback Machine

  1. Open the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine and choose its Save Page Now function.
  2. Paste the exact URL of the news article and submit it.
  3. If the capture completes, open the returned snapshot URL. Check that the headline, article text, images, and date are present.
  4. Keep the snapshot URL alongside the original article URL and the date you accessed it.

Save Page Now is a single-page action: it does not start a whole-site crawl or save the article’s outlinks. The Internet Archive says a successful page capture can include images and CSS. Its help information also notes that some sites prohibit crawling and that certain SSL or security settings can prevent a capture. A submitted URL is used to create a public snapshot; the Internet Archive says the submission is anonymous and it does not keep the submitter’s IP address.

Use ArchiveBox for a collection you manage

ArchiveBox is an open-source, self-hosted application. You provide URLs or import sources such as bookmarks and feeds, then retain the resulting archive files in storage you control. Its capture formats and extracted content depend on the methods enabled and the page itself; multiple formats provide options, not a guarantee that every page will be complete or faithful.

Plan the workflow before importing

  • Choose what to import: a short URL list, bookmarks, browser history, or a feed-based workflow.
  • Choose where the ArchiveBox database and captured files will live. The project documentation advises using a reliable local drive for the database; bulk archive files can be placed on a slower hard drive or remote filesystem.
  • Decide how you will schedule recurring imports, apply updates, and back up the collection. Storage needs vary with capture settings and the media on the pages, so a single universal capacity estimate would be misleading.
  • After a capture, inspect the available HTML, PDF, image, WARC, or article-text output that matters to you. A dynamic page, restricted content, or publisher defenses may affect what is captured.

Use both when the article matters

If a Wayback capture fails, that does not prove the page cannot be preserved. Try ArchiveBox with a page you can access normally and inspect its outputs. ArchiveBox’s project documentation says it can submit saved pages to archive.org by default, and that local-only mode is available. The tools can therefore complement one another: a public snapshot for sharing and a locally managed capture for your own collection.

What to expect for Indian news pages

The tools work with URLs; the official materials covered here do not describe an India-only mode or special support for Indian news sites. No comparative capture results are established for Indian publishers, regional-language pages, or paywalled articles. Do not assume that a particular language, country domain, publisher, or paywall will work: test the exact URL and inspect the saved result.

Archiving is not a way to defeat a paywall or publisher restriction, and a snapshot does not settle copyright or redistribution questions. Follow applicable law, publisher terms, and any institutional policy. If the material is important, retain an independent capture and record the original URL and access date rather than relying on one archive alone.

Troubleshoot an incomplete or failed capture

Symptom What it may mean What to try
Save Page Now does not produce a usable snapshot The site may prohibit crawling, or its SSL/security configuration may interfere. Check the exact URL and try ArchiveBox on a page you can access normally; inspect its available outputs.
Images or styling are missing The page’s assets may not have been captured or rendered successfully. Open the snapshot itself and verify what was retained; do not treat a returned archive link as proof that every asset is present.
Only the article page appears, not linked stories Save Page Now saves the submitted page, not its outlinks. Submit additional URLs individually, or use ArchiveBox to build a collection from a URL list or imports.
A paywalled or dynamic page is incomplete Access restrictions or page behavior can limit the capture; neither service promises universal coverage. Capture only content you can access legitimately, inspect the output, and preserve another independent record if permitted.
An ArchiveBox collection grows unexpectedly Storage depends on capture settings and captured media. Review the import scope and capture configuration, choose storage deliberately, and keep a backup plan.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot of a page rather than a public web archive or a self-hosted collection, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server; it is not a replacement for a Wayback snapshot or an ArchiveBox collection. Its clean-shot steps accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.

Frequently asked questions

Can I save a news article to the Internet Archive without crawling the whole site?

Yes. Save Page Now is intended for an individual page URL; a whole-site crawl is a different workflow.
