ArchiveBox documents URL-list imports and XML/feed input, but its documentation does not guarantee that every sitemap format or nested sitemap index will be expanded automatically.
Prepare the sitemap URL list
- Find the site’s sitemap, often linked from its
robots.txt. If it is a sitemap index, identify its child sitemaps and include the page URLs from those files too. - Use a sitemap-aware XML tool or script to extract each page’s
<loc>value into a plain-text file. Put one complete URL on each line. - Review the list before importing: preserve the URLs as listed, remove entries you do not want to archive, and check for duplicates if needed.
These discovery and extraction steps are a general XML workflow; they are not a claim that ArchiveBox automatically finds a sitemap or expands every sitemap index.
Import the URLs with ArchiveBox
From the ArchiveBox data directory, pass the prepared list on standard input:
archivebox add < urls.txtThe same input can be piped directly:

Run the import in Docker
When piping into a Docker container, pass standard input through with -i and mount the ArchiveBox data directory at /data:
cat urls.txt | docker run --rm -v "$PWD:/data" -i archivebox/archivebox:dev addRun the import with Docker Compose
The documented Compose example uses -T when piping the URL list:

ArchiveBox guidance says it accepts RSS, XML, Netscape, and other supported import formats through standard input, and the repository overview illustrates an XML feed parser plugin. That establishes some XML/feed import support, not guaranteed parsing for every sitemap format, namespace variant, sitemap index, or very large file in every release. Check the help output and parser plugins for your installed version if you want to pass XML directly.
If ArchiveBox imports the XML document as a single page instead of expanding its listed locations, extract the sitemap’s <loc> entries to a one-URL-per-line text file and import that list as shown above. Avoid assuming that supplying a remote sitemap URL as an ordinary page argument will archive all of its listed pages: input behavior depends on the documented import path and compatible parser.

Verify what was archived
Importing URLs submits them to ArchiveBox; it does not guarantee that each target page can be reached or captured. After the command finishes, inspect the resulting archive and its failures or omissions. Pages may require authentication, block automated retrieval, redirect, or have been removed.
Troubleshooting and scale
- The sitemap appears as one archived page: Extract the
<loc>values first, or confirm that a compatible parser is enabled for your installed ArchiveBox version. - Docker receives no URLs: Include
-iso Docker forwards piped standard input into the container. - Compose receives no URLs: Use the documented
-Toption for the piped command. - Some pages are missing or fail: Inspect the archive output. Importing a URL cannot overcome removed pages, access requirements, redirects, or automated-request blocks.
- The sitemap is very large: The documentation cited here establishes no universal batch size, throughput, or timeout. Test a representative sample, monitor failures, and tune the import to your deployment rather than relying on a fixed limit.
