Short answer: Astra Streaming Studio and OBS Studio are not direct substitutes. The Google Play listing describes Astra as an Android app for mobile streaming, IP-camera use and recording; OBS is desktop software for streaming and recording. If you mean that Android app, it may serve as a phone-based camera or stream source while OBS handles desktop production—but the available product information does not confirm a specific Astra-to-OBS connection method or show which setup performs better on a low-cost PC.

For Indian creators, the practical choice depends on the devices you already have, your intended stream quality, and sustained upload and encoding performance. Test the exact setup before going live rather than treating a general system requirement or bitrate recommendation as a guarantee.

First, make sure “Astra Streaming” means the Android app

The Google Play listing for Astra Streaming Studio describes a mobile app with streaming, recording and IP-camera capabilities. It lists H.264/AAC and support for SRT, RTMP, RTSP, RTMPS and RTSPS. The listing reports an update on 31 October 2023, so check the current listing and app behavior before relying on a particular feature.

That description is not evidence of a desktop Astra application, an OBS plugin, or a tested integration workflow. OBS Studio, by contrast, is desktop software for producing streams and recordings. The two apps may have different roles: Astra could provide a mobile camera or stream source, while OBS could manage a desktop production. That is a plausible arrangement based on their listed functions and protocols, not a verified, seamless integration.

How the roles differ

Question Astra Streaming Studio OBS Studio
Where it runs, according to the cited product information Android app (Google Play listing) Desktop software
Listed role or capabilities Mobile streaming, IP-camera use and recording Streaming and recording; YouTube describes encoder streaming as useful for screen sharing, gameplay, external audio/video equipment and advanced productions
Listed formats or protocols H.264/AAC; SRT, RTMP, RTSP, RTMPS and RTSPS OBS system requirements and help pages cited here do not establish an Astra connection method
Evidence of a working Astra-to-OBS setup Not established by the app listing Not established by the sources cited here
Which performs better on a particular low-cost PC? Not established Not established; performance depends on the actual workload and system

OBS is open source under GPLv2, free for any use including commercial use, and has no watermarks or usage limitations, according to its help portal. That answers the licensing-cost question, not whether an individual PC can encode a particular stream smoothly.

Will OBS run well on a low-cost PC?

There is no universal answer based only on the label “low-cost.” OBS says that a compatible system is not necessarily capable of streaming or recording adequately. Its requirements page, dated 25 August 2021, says the workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity, and recommends using the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat those requirements as compatibility guidance, not as a current benchmark for a specific budget PC: OBS system requirements.

A simple scene at a modest resolution can impose a different workload from a multi-source scene with motion, overlays and several capture devices. A phone running Astra may provide a camera or stream source, but that alone does not prove it will reduce the PC’s encoding workload: the exact connection and division of tasks need to be confirmed and tested.

Details to check before deciding

  • The PC’s processor, graphics hardware and available hardware encoder, RAM and operating system.
  • The phone model and Android app behavior, if Astra is part of the plan.
  • The intended resolution and frame rate, plus the number and complexity of OBS sources.
  • Your sustained upload capacity at the location and time you expect to stream—not just a brief peak reading.
  • How the Astra output would reach OBS, and whether the chosen devices, protocol and network actually support that arrangement.

Choose YouTube Live settings by testing the whole setup

YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. The following H.264 bitrate figures are platform recommendations, not minimum upload-speed rules or guarantees that an Indian PC or internet connection will sustain a stream. YouTube also recommends a two-second keyframe interval, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMPS. Check the current YouTube encoder settings guidance before configuring a live encoder, since platform recommendations can change.

H.264 output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
240p–720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps

These values are for the video encoding recommendation. Your connection must also handle audio and other network activity reliably. There is no India-specific bitrate or minimum upload figure established here; test the connection and machine you will actually use.

Set up and test before the broadcast

  1. Enable live streaming in YouTube. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours.
  2. Choose a realistic output. Pick a resolution and frame rate your intended encoder and sustained connection can handle. Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for that codec and output.
  3. Configure the encoder. For the H.264 guidance above, YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, AAC or MP3 audio, and RTMPS. Apply the settings in the encoder you are using; do not assume an unverified Astra-to-OBS path carries every setting through as expected.
  4. Use a private or unlisted test stream. Include movement and audio representative of the planned broadcast. Check both encoding performance on the PC and the stream-health information in YouTube Studio.
  5. Adjust one demanding setting at a time. If the test shows encoding strain or unstable delivery, reduce the output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or lower the bitrate in line with YouTube’s guidance. Retest before relying on the setup.

YouTube’s own instruction is direct: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance calls for representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health.

How to choose between the two

  • Choose OBS as the starting point if you need desktop production—such as combining screen content, audio/video equipment or multiple scene elements—and your PC passes a representative test.
  • Consider Astra for a mobile role if you specifically want to use an Android device for streaming, recording or IP-camera use. Confirm that its current features fit your phone and intended workflow.
  • Consider using both only after verifying the connection. The listed Astra protocols suggest possible ways a mobile source might be made available to other software, but the sources do not verify compatibility with a particular OBS setup. Confirm the exact method, then test it on your devices.
  • Do not pick a performance winner from the names alone. No cited source provides a head-to-head benchmark, universal low-end-PC minimum, or result for a specific Indian creator’s hardware, network and scene.

Troubleshooting a test stream

Symptom What to check Practical next step
OBS is compatible with the system but the stream or recording performs poorly Compatibility does not guarantee adequate performance; encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity all matter. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, simplify the scene or reduce output demands, then repeat a representative test.
The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health Check sustained upload stability and whether the chosen bitrate and output are appropriate for the connection. Test at a lower output or bitrate guided by YouTube’s recommendations; monitor stream health during the test.
Astra does not appear as an expected OBS source The app listing does not document a verified OBS integration path. Confirm the precise output method and protocol for the current app and OBS setup; do not assume that protocol support alone ensures compatibility.
Video or audio is missing or unlike the planned broadcast The test may not represent the real camera, movement or audio chain. Repeat with the intended devices and representative movement and audio, checking the result in both the encoder and YouTube Studio.
YouTube will not let you start your first live stream yet First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours. Enable streaming in advance and follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps before the scheduled broadcast.

Copyright and YouTube rules still apply

Using Astra, OBS or both does not change the need to follow YouTube’s rules. Make sure you have the rights to the video, music and other material in the broadcast, and review YouTube’s current live-stream requirements before publishing. A successful technical test does not establish that content is eligible for monetization or complies with platform policies.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than produce a live camera or desktop broadcast, StreamNeo is a different option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide.
