There is no verified Astra-specific YouTube Live bitrate preset: YouTube’s recommended settings depend on your stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate. Start with the matching row in YouTube’s guidance, choose a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, and test before going live. “Astra” can refer to different products, and the official documentation reviewed does not establish that either changes YouTube’s ingest requirements.
What “Astra” means for YouTube Live settings
At least two products are called Astra, and neither should be confused with YouTube’s encoder requirements.
- Topaz Labs Astra is a cloud video enhancement and rendering workflow: upload a video, choose a model and output options, render, then download the result. Its documentation describes output up to 4K and frame interpolation from 24 to 120 FPS depending on requirements; it describes rendered files, not a live YouTube encoder preset. Topaz Labs Astra quick start.
- Cesbo Astra processes a channel or media flow from sources and can deliver it to clients, with configurable inputs and optional outputs. Its overview does not specify YouTube Live bitrate settings. Cesbo Astra overview.
If you mean one of these products, set YouTube’s ingest according to the output your encoder sends and YouTube’s recommendations below. Do not assume the Astra name supplies a separate bitrate standard.
Recommended YouTube Live video bitrates
YouTube’s current English-language guidance, accessed in 2026, gives recommended ingest bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate. These are YouTube recommendations, not independent test results. Use the row matching the video encoder’s output.

| Ingest resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate | H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K), 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K), 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p, 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p, 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p, 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, YouTube’s 2026 guidance recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps, versus 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate. These are alternatives for different codecs, not a single bitrate to apply regardless of encoder support. If you need 4K, note that YouTube sets 2160p streams to normal latency; the low-latency improvement option is unavailable at that resolution. YouTube Live encoder settings.
Choose resolution and bitrate for your connection
A high-resolution setting is only useful if your encoder can produce it and your internet connection can deliver it steadily. YouTube advises checking upload bitrate with a speed test and choosing quality that remains reliable on the available connection.

- Match the ingest resolution and frame rate to what your source and encoder can consistently output. Do not select 60 fps if the source only delivers 30 fps.
- Use the bitrate recommended for that resolution, frame rate, and codec as your target, then confirm the upload connection can sustain it. A speed test is a capacity check, not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable throughout the stream.
- If upload capacity fluctuates, consider a lower resolution or frame rate rather than pushing a setting the connection cannot maintain.
- YouTube transcodes a live stream into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. Your encoder’s ingest resolution is therefore not the only playback format viewers may receive.
Encoder settings beyond bitrate
YouTube’s encoder guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest; video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; and AAC or MP3 audio. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s encrypted extension of RTMP. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and does not support AV1 for HDR. Confirm that your encoder and chosen ingest protocol support the combination you intend to use.
| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Video bitrate mode | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Pixel shape and scan | Square pixels; progressive scan |
| Advanced video settings | 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz; 128 Kbps recommended |
| 5.1 audio | AAC or MP3; 48 kHz; 384 Kbps recommended |
These are the settings in YouTube’s current encoder guidance; an encoder may label or expose individual controls differently. Use its corresponding options where available.

Automatic detection or manual resolution?
By default, YouTube detects resolution and frame rate. That is the simplest choice when you want the encoder and YouTube to handle detection. If you need to constrain the ingest resolution or frame rate, YouTube’s Live Control Room instructions call for a custom stream key with manual settings enabled under Stream Resolution.
Google’s API documentation describes variable resolution and variable frame rate as automatic-detection values and specifies that they must be used together. Do not pair one variable value with a manually fixed counterpart. Google YouTube Live Streams API documentation.

Set up and test before going public
- Confirm the output. Check the resolution, frame rate, and codec your encoder will send. Select the matching bitrate row above.
- Check upload capacity. Run a speed test and choose a quality level the connection can sustain reliably.
- Configure the encoder. Set RTMPS where supported, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the relevant video and audio values from YouTube’s guidance.
- Configure the stream key. In Live Control Room, use the default automatic detection unless you need manual resolution and frame rate; manual selection requires a custom stream key and the manual option under Stream Resolution.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the actual event. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch stream health. Check Live Control Room for warnings during the test and the event, and correct configuration issues before relying on the stream.
Troubleshoot YouTube Live stream health warnings
Google’s Live Streams API health documentation identifies configuration issues that can affect ingestion. A warning should guide what to inspect; it does not, by itself, identify a particular Astra product as the cause.
| Possible issue | What to check |
|---|---|
| Video bitrate too high or too low | Confirm the encoder’s bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check whether the connection can sustain the configured rate. |
| Keyframe interval over 4 seconds | Set the interval to YouTube’s recommended 2 seconds and ensure it does not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Unsupported codec or resolution | Verify the encoder is sending a codec and resolution supported by YouTube’s current guidance. |
| Video ingestion starvation | Check whether the encoder or network is failing to send enough video consistently. Google describes starvation as: “YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming.” Viewers may experience buffering. |
For details on health states and stream configuration, consult Google’s Live Streams API documentation.

Copyright and reused-content checks
Correct encoder settings do not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in a broadcast. Before streaming, make sure you have the necessary rights or permissions for the content and understand YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies. A stream can be technically healthy and still face a copyright claim or other policy action. Review YouTube’s copyright basics and YouTube channel monetization policies, including reused-content guidance, if monetization matters to you.
