You can send video from Astra Streaming Studio on Android to a YouTube live stream by using YouTube’s current RTMP server address and stream key. But the available Astra documentation does not confirm a dedicated 9:16 output setting or compatibility with YouTube’s vertical dual-stream setup. If portrait viewing in the Shorts feed is essential, verify that YouTube Studio shows a vertical preview before you go live.
What Astra can—and cannot—be confirmed to do
Astra Streaming Studio is an Android app whose Google Play listing describes H.264/AAC encoding, RTMP and RTMPS streaming, and live camera and screen capture. The listing reports an update date of 31 October 2023. It establishes that an RTMP workflow is plausible, but it does not document a portrait 9:16 canvas, a dedicated YouTube vertical stream key, or compatibility with YouTube’s vertical dual-stream encoder path. See the Astra Streaming Studio listing on Google Play.
So the reliable distinction is: Astra can be configured to send an RTMP feed to YouTube; the available documentation does not establish that Astra by itself will create a vertical live stream surfaced in YouTube’s Shorts feed. YouTube’s own Live Control Room offers documented vertical and dual-format options, but you should confirm the actual preview in your current Studio session.
Check YouTube live-stream eligibility first
YouTube’s current guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. The person live-streaming must be at least 16 years old. Confirm eligibility before configuring Astra, since an encoder cannot bypass channel restrictions. YouTube’s live-streaming help is the current reference for these requirements.

Connect Astra Streaming Studio to YouTube with RTMP
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use, following the current prompts in Studio.
- Copy the ingest/server address and stream key shown for that stream. Use the values displayed in the active YouTube Studio session rather than relying on saved or third-party examples. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, send it to viewers, or include it in a screenshot.
- Configure the destination in Astra. In Astra Streaming Studio, create or edit a streaming destination, choose RTMP, and enter the server address and stream key from YouTube. The exact labels and screen arrangement may vary by app version; the independent setup walkthrough describes this RTMP workflow, but it is not a current developer manual. Read the setup walkthrough.
- Choose the camera or screen content and start the feed from Astra. Then return to Live Control Room and wait for YouTube to receive the signal. Do not assume that tapping start in Astra means the stream is public or that its presentation is vertical.
- Inspect YouTube’s incoming preview and status. Confirm that video and audio arrive and that the framing is right. If your audience needs a vertical version, look specifically for a vertical preview or select a documented YouTube vertical workflow before going live.
- Start the broadcast in YouTube Studio when the preview is ready. Follow the live controls shown for the stream you created. Keep Astra running and the phone connected for the duration of this phone-based broadcast.
Choose a vertical presentation: YouTube canvas or encoder dual stream
Use YouTube Live Control Room’s vertical layout
YouTube says its Live Control Room streams default to simultaneous 16:9 horizontal and 9:16 vertical formats. The vertical version defaults to a center crop; documented layout choices also include fit to phone width and stacked. You can edit layouts before going live, and YouTube says they can be adjusted during a stream if they were initially created through its editing canvas. Check the preview because a center crop can cut off a subject, captions, or text near the sides.
Use encoder dual streaming only if the encoder can send both feeds
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses RTMP(S) and a second stream key for the vertical feed. The encoder must send the matching format to each key, and YouTube says the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started. The available Astra listing does not establish that the app can send this second feed or use YouTube’s vertical key. Do not assume that entering one RTMP destination in Astra is sufficient for dual streaming.

| Choice | What YouTube documents | What to verify before going live |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room vertical layout | Simultaneous 16:9 and 9:16 presentations; center crop by default, with fit-to-phone-width and stacked layouts also available. | That the vertical preview is present and the chosen crop keeps the important content visible. |
| Encoder dual stream | RTMP(S), a second stream key for vertical output, and matching output format for each key; vertical cannot be added after starting. | That the encoder supports sending both feeds and the required keys. Astra’s available listing does not confirm this support. |
What viewers and creators should expect from vertical live
YouTube says viewers in the Shorts feed on mobile see the vertical version, while other viewers see the horizontal version. Both formats use the same URL and live chat. The feature comparison also says vertical lives support memberships and are discoverable in Shorts, but they do not support clickable links in chat or the channel description, pre-roll or mid-roll live ads, or 4K bitrate streaming on the YouTube app. Live Control Room provides combined metrics; vertical-only metrics become available 24 hours later. These details are subject to YouTube’s current feature documentation.
Troubleshoot a missing feed or missing vertical preview
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the server address and key were copied from the intended stream in the current Live Control Room session, and that Astra is configured to use RTMP with those values. Keep the key private while checking it.
- The stream arrives but is not vertical: A working RTMP connection does not prove that Astra is sending a 9:16 feed. Check YouTube’s vertical preview and use the documented Live Control Room layout or a confirmed dual-stream encoder workflow.
- The crop cuts off the subject or text: Review the selected vertical layout. YouTube’s documented alternatives to the default center crop include fit to phone width and stacked; adjust before going live and check the resulting preview.
- The vertical feed is absent after starting: YouTube says the encoder’s vertical format cannot be added after a stream has started. Stop and configure the required vertical feed and second key before restarting, rather than expecting a late switch to create it.
- The channel cannot start a live stream: Check verification, the previous 90-day restriction status, and the minimum age requirement in YouTube’s current guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
