Set the YouTube-facing title and thumbnail in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room—not in IRL Pro. Use IRL Pro to send the video feed, then check YouTube’s preview and choose Go live when you are ready.
Set the title and thumbnail in YouTube Studio
- Open Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder and streaming settings help describes creating a stream and editing its metadata.
- Enter the stream title. In the stream’s setup or details controls, add the title and any other available metadata. YouTube says metadata can be selected during stream creation or edited from the stream settings page or while scheduling.
- Add the thumbnail. Use YouTube’s stream setup or customization controls to add or upload a custom thumbnail. Google’s live-production guide describes a custom thumbnail as an image representing the event and specifies a 16:9 aspect ratio. Confirm the current upload requirements in Studio: the cited guide does not establish current file-size or resolution limits.
- Copy YouTube’s connection details. Get the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder settings. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it or show it in screenshots.
- Configure IRL Pro. In IRL Pro’s broadcast settings, select a protocol supported by both ends and enter the YouTube destination URL and stream key. The IRL Pro guide covers broadcast destination and protocol setup, rather than title or thumbnail editing.
- Start the feed and go live. Start broadcasting from IRL Pro. Wait until YouTube shows the incoming feed in Live Control Room, check the preview, then select Go live in YouTube to make the stream public according to its privacy setting.
What IRL Pro controls—and what it does not
IRL Pro is the encoder sending your broadcast feed to YouTube. The reviewed IRL Pro instructions document the connection setup, not controls for a YouTube stream title or thumbnail. Make those changes in YouTube Studio’s stream controls.
YouTube’s production guide instructs creators to enter a title and description and select a privacy setting; it also describes adding a custom thumbnail in 16:9. YouTube’s encoder help supports editing metadata during creation, from stream settings, or while scheduling. It does not guarantee that every field remains editable in every interface or stream state once an encoder stream is live. For a scheduled stream, open its Manage or Edit controls and confirm which fields are available before relying on a change.
Use RTMPS when available
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted version of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. Check the protocol choices in YouTube and IRL Pro and select a matching option; if RTMPS is unavailable in your encoder workflow, use a protocol both sides support. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance explains its recommendation.

Check the stream before publishing
- Confirm the title identifies the event clearly and matches what viewers will see.
- Check that the thumbnail is 16:9 and represents the stream; follow the current upload constraints shown in Studio.
- Verify the correct stream and privacy setting are selected, especially if you have more than one scheduled event.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview and confirm both picture and audio before selecting Go live. YouTube recommends testing audio and motion and monitoring stream health; suitable encoder settings depend on resolution, frame rate, and codec.
- Keep the stream key private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update IRL Pro with the new key.
Troubleshooting
The title or thumbnail is not visible in IRL Pro
That is expected in this workflow: IRL Pro sends the feed, while YouTube Studio manages the stream’s metadata. Return to Live Control Room and edit the selected stream’s details or customization controls.
YouTube does not show an incoming preview
Check that IRL Pro is sending to the URL for the same stream selected in Live Control Room, that the key was copied correctly, and that both sides use a compatible protocol. Keep the key private while checking it. Wait for YouTube to detect the encoder feed before trying to go live.

The Edit option or metadata field is unavailable
Controls can vary with stream state and interface. For a scheduled event, open its Manage or Edit controls; for a stream not yet created, enter metadata during setup. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish that every field can be changed after an encoder stream is already live.
The thumbnail is rejected or displays incorrectly
Check that the image uses a 16:9 aspect ratio and consult the current upload requirements shown in YouTube Studio. The cited Google guide does not specify the current file-size or resolution limits.
