Choose IRL Pro’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate for the upload connection you can sustain—not the highest quality you can select. For YouTube at 30 fps, its recommended ingest rates are 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p, and 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 8 Mbps for H.264 at 720p. YouTube also recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. Those are platform recommendations, not guaranteed stable presets for every phone, network or IRL Pro setup.
Recommended YouTube bitrates for IRL Pro
Resolution and codec affect the bitrate YouTube recommends. The following figures are YouTube’s recommended ingest rates at 30 fps, not measured IRL Pro results or minimum rates. Use a codec only if it is supported by the phone’s encoder, IRL Pro workflow and destination.
| Resolution and frame rate | Codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps | When the phone supports the codec and the upload stays stable in real conditions. |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 14 Mbps | When sustained upload capacity is available with headroom; it demands more upload than the listed AV1/H.265 setting. |
| 720p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps | A lower-demand option to test when mobile coverage is constrained. |
| 720p30 | H.264 | 8 Mbps | A lower-resolution option; YouTube’s listed recommendation is higher than for AV1/H.265 at this resolution. |
YouTube’s general encoder guidance also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations; confirm that IRL Pro and the selected service expose the relevant controls before assuming you can set them. YouTube advises choosing a quality that is reliable for your internet connection and recommends testing upload bitrate. YouTube Live encoder settings
Choose a quality your mobile connection can sustain
A speed test is a useful starting point, not a guarantee for a moving phone or a long broadcast. Signal strength, network congestion and other devices sharing the connection can change available upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom; avoid setting the stream at the full result of a best-case speed test.
#1 Best Overall
- Compact but Powerful Design: ZowieBox is smaller than a phone, featuring a tally light and LCD screen for streaming status. Capture console gameplay in up to 4K with zero-lag HDMI passthrough, while the built-in video encoder converts video for IP streaming. The IP stream can also be decoded back to a 4K HDMI signal.

Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
- UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
- All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
- Test on the network and route the stream will actually use, including locations where coverage may weaken.
- Use a lower resolution or bitrate if upload capacity fluctuates. Stable motion and fewer interruptions matter more than selecting a high resolution that the connection cannot sustain.
- Test with representative movement and audio; a stationary test may not reflect an IRL stream.
- Do not assume H.264, AV1 or H.265 is universally best on a particular phone. Actual encoder support and performance depend on the handset and workflow.
For a 24/7 broadcast, a successful short test does not establish that the same phone can run unattended for days. A maintained third-party IRL Pro setup guide reports heat and battery drain concerns, but does not establish a safe continuous operating profile or a universal runtime. Test the exact handset and setup for a sufficiently long period. IRL Pro setup guide
Set up and test IRL Pro with YouTube
- Enable live streaming on YouTube. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream. YouTube says first-time live activation may take up to 24 hours. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current channel workflow.
- Select resolution and frame rate in IRL Pro. Start with a quality the phone and connection can maintain. Use the YouTube bitrate table as a platform reference, not as a promise of stability on your route.
- Check upload capacity in realistic conditions. Test where and how the phone will broadcast, account for shared network use, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Include movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast, then check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on the setup.
- Verify the protocol and connection path. Enhanced IRL’s instructions describe RTMP and SRT support in its service workflow, but say IRL Pro uses a single connection without bonding there. Its plan caps and sample rates apply to that service, not automatically to every IRL Pro setup. Enhanced IRL instructions
- Test heat, power and battery behavior. Observe the exact phone while streaming and charging during an extended test. A power bank may help address battery drain, but compatibility and safe charging are device-specific; it does not establish protection against overheating.
- Decide how to preserve a replay. Verify that any separate recording is actually being captured and that its file is complete.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. If a complete replay matters, use broadcast sessions shorter than 12 hours and/or maintain a separate local or external recording, then verify the recording is growing and complete. A continuous 24/7 stream should not be treated as a guaranteed full-length YouTube archive. YouTube’s live-streaming guidance

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health warnings, buffering or dropped frames | Upload capacity is unstable, shared or insufficient for the selected bitrate. | Retest upload under representative conditions, leave 20% headroom, and lower bitrate or resolution until the stream is stable. |
| Settings cannot be selected or do not behave as expected | The phone encoder, IRL Pro version, protocol or service may not support the selected codec or control. | Confirm supported formats and exposed controls in the exact workflow; do not assume YouTube’s encoder guidance is configurable in every app path. |
| Connection does not combine multiple networks | The reviewed Enhanced IRL instructions specify one connection for its IRL Pro path, without bonding. | Test the actual route and service plan; do not apply Enhanced IRL plan caps or behavior to other services without confirmation. |
| Phone gets hot or battery drains during a long stream | Continuous encoding and charging can stress a phone; behavior varies by handset and conditions. | Run an extended device-specific test, monitor temperature and charging behavior, and stop if the device becomes unsafe. No reviewed source establishes a universally safe unattended profile. |
| Long stream is missing from the archive or lacks rewind | YouTube says streams beyond 12 hours may not be captured; DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. | Keep sessions under 12 hours when archive retention matters, and use a verified separate recording path if needed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
IRL Pro is a phone-based DIY route, so the handset and its connection must remain part of the operating setup. StreamNeo is an alternative for keeping uploaded video live on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. The cloud loops the uploaded video, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the upload as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream, and includes the first day free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live phone camera. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
