For a phone stream that should continue while you use other apps, Android is the practical choice: Larix Broadcaster supports background streaming by default until you explicitly close it, while PRISM Live Studio requires permission to display over other apps. Neither app’s documentation establishes that a phone can reliably run unattended around the clock. On iOS, neither is a documented solution for background camera video.

Choose Larix on Android for encoder and protocol flexibility; choose PRISM on Android for its mobile production tools and YouTube workflow. If you mean a genuinely unattended 24/7 YouTube channel rather than a stream that survives app switching, consider a cloud service such as StreamNeo instead of relying on a phone.

Larix vs PRISM at a glance

Decision point Larix Broadcaster PRISM Live Studio What it means for an always-on channel
YouTube support YouTube lists Larix as a mobile encoder; Softvelum documents RTMP publishing and other protocols. YouTube lists PRISM as a mobile encoder. PRISM documents platform-account and custom RTMP routes. Both can send a mobile stream to YouTube, but encoder compatibility does not establish continuous uptime. YouTube’s encoder list
Android background video Available by default until the app is explicitly closed, according to Softvelum. Requires enabling “Allow display over other apps.” Both document a way to keep broadcasting while the app is unfocused on Android. Larix FAQ · PRISM background broadcast guide
iOS background video Larix says iOS background mode cannot access the camera or encoder; audio-only background capture is possible. PRISM says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting. Neither is a documented choice for camera video that must continue while backgrounded on iOS. Larix FAQ · PRISM background broadcast guide
Long-session limit Free RTMP/SRT streaming stops after 30 minutes, then allows another 30 minutes with a mandatory overlay before stopping. Softvelum says Premium removes this time limit. The consulted official guide and FAQ do not establish an equivalent general continuous-stream cap. Larix free has a published cap; the absence of a found PRISM cap is not evidence of unlimited runtime. Verify current app behavior and plan details. Larix Premium
Production and configuration Supports RTMP, SRT and other protocols, overlays, and pause/standby modes; some advanced capabilities are paid. Designed for mobile IRL and gaming workflows, with overlays, source composition, chroma key, and screen modes. Larix suits an encoder-first workflow; PRISM suits a composed mobile show. Keep persistent scenes lean. Larix · PRISM sources guide

What “always-on” means on a phone

Streaming in the background

If you mean keeping a camera stream going while switching to another app, the official documentation supports Android workflows in both apps. Larix says Android background streaming is available by default until the app is explicitly closed. PRISM requires the Android permission to display over other apps. These are background-operation features, not guarantees that a stream will survive every phone, network, or operating-system interruption.

Unattended, continuous 24/7 streaming

A phone must remain powered, cool, connected, and encoding for the entire session. The app documentation reviewed here does not demonstrate that either app on a particular handset can do this reliably for 24 hours or longer. Do not treat “works in the background” as an uptime promise.

Which app should you choose?

Choose Larix on Android when configuration flexibility matters

Larix is the stronger fit if you want protocol options such as RTMP or SRT, or prefer a direct encoder workflow. Its Android background mode is available by default until you explicitly close the app. For sessions beyond the free allowance, Softvelum says Premium removes the streaming time limit; that removes the stated app cap, not the practical limits of a phone or a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.

Choose PRISM on Android when you want mobile production tools

PRISM is a better fit if you want to compose a mobile show with overlays, sources, chroma key, or screen modes and use its documented YouTube workflow. Enable its background permission and avoid loading a persistent scene with unnecessary layers. PRISM’s guide gives different source limits by operating system and mode and recommends minimizing sources to help stability. See PRISM’s source guidance.

Do not choose either for background camera video on iOS

PRISM says iOS apps do not support background live broadcasting. Larix says iOS background mode cannot access the camera or encoder, though audio-only background capture is possible. If the requirement is that camera video continue with the app backgrounded, neither app’s documentation supports that use on iOS.

Set up a phone stream to YouTube

Larix: connect with YouTube’s RTMP details

  1. Get the stream details in YouTube Studio. For the stream, use the server URL and stream key provided by YouTube. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find and use them: YouTube Help: encoder setup.
  2. Configure Larix’s connection. Softvelum explains that the full connection URL is made by combining the server/application address with the stream key. Follow its current instructions for the app’s RTMP publishing fields: Larix RTMP setup.
  3. Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public instructions, or messages to people who do not need access. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before the next broadcast.
  4. Test before relying on the stream. Confirm YouTube receives video and audio, then test background behavior on the actual phone and network. A successful short test does not establish 24/7 reliability.

PRISM: use its YouTube workflow and enable Android backgrounding

  1. Connect the YouTube destination. Follow PRISM’s YouTube guide for the current Android or iOS workflow. Its FAQ also describes connecting a platform account or entering a custom RTMP server and stream key when needed: PRISM YouTube guide.
  2. On Android, allow background broadcasting. Enable “Allow display over other apps” for PRISM. The permission allows the broadcast to continue while you use other apps; it does not establish unattended uptime. See PRISM’s background guide.
  3. Keep the scene simple. Add only the sources the broadcast needs, such as an image, text, chat, or playback layer. PRISM cautions that too many sources can overload a stream; source limits vary by OS and mode. Check the source guide.
  4. End the broadcast in the app. PRISM’s FAQ warns that transmission may continue according to platform RTMP policy even if the viewing platform appears to have ended the broadcast. Use PRISM’s End control to stop safely: PRISM FAQ.

Costs and duration limits

Larix’s free RTMP/SRT allowance is 30 minutes, followed by another 30 minutes with a mandatory overlay; then the stream stops. Softvelum says Premium removes this streaming time limit. Premium pricing and terms can change, so check the current Larix Premium page before buying. The consulted PRISM documentation did not establish an equivalent general session cap, so do not infer that PRISM streams indefinitely.

When neither phone app is the right host

If the goal is an unattended 24/7 YouTube channel playing pre-recorded video, a phone encoder is the wrong thing to rely on: background permission alone cannot keep a handset powered, cool, connected, and running indefinitely. StreamNeo is the #1 alternative for this use: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, with any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. It streams to YouTube only.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the video from its cloud service, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The stream uses your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month; other available terms are listed on StreamNeo’s pricing page. Billing can be daily, weekly, monthly, for 6 months, or yearly, and can be canceled any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.

Troubleshooting phone-based streams

  • The stream stops when you switch apps on Android: confirm PRISM has “Allow display over other apps” enabled, or check that Larix was not explicitly closed. Repeat the test on the handset you plan to use.
  • The video stops when you leave the app on iOS: this is consistent with the documented background limitations. PRISM does not support background live broadcasting on iOS; Larix background mode cannot access the camera or encoder.
  • Larix stops after an hour: the free RTMP/SRT sequence is 30 minutes, then another 30 minutes with a mandatory overlay, after which it stops. Check the current Premium terms if you need the app’s time limit removed.
  • PRISM’s stream becomes unstable with a complex scene: remove unnecessary sources and retest. PRISM says source limits vary by operating system and mode and recommends minimizing sources.
  • YouTube appears to have ended, but PRISM is still transmitting: use PRISM’s End control rather than assuming the viewing platform’s status has stopped the app’s RTMP transmission.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: replace it in YouTube Studio and update the app’s connection settings. Do not publish or share the replacement key.

FAQ

Can I turn off my phone screen and keep streaming?

The cited documentation establishes background behavior, not a guarantee for every screen-off or power-management state. Test that exact condition on your phone before depending on it.

Can either app stream from a camera in the background on iPhone?

No, not according to the reviewed official guidance: PRISM says iOS background live broadcasting is unsupported, and Larix says iOS background mode lacks camera and encoder access.

Does PRISM have no time limit?

The consulted official PRISM guide and FAQ do not establish a general continuous-stream cap. That is not proof of unlimited operation; check the current app behavior and terms.
