For a single script that saves full-page screenshots, Playwright and Puppeteer are comparably direct. For screenshots inside an end-to-end or visual-regression test suite, Playwright is often the easier choice to maintain because its locator and auto-waiting workflow can reduce explicit synchronization, and Playwright Test includes screenshot assertions. That advantage is an inference from documented features, not a measured head-to-head maintenance result. If your team already has a working Puppeteer setup, staying with it may be simpler.

What is different about maintaining a screenshot script versus a screenshot test?

The maintenance question depends less on the call that writes an image than on everything around it: waiting for the page to be ready, deciding what counts as a visual failure, and keeping expected images meaningful as the site changes.

  • Capture-only script: both libraries offer a direct page screenshot method. Choose based on your existing project and browser requirements; the documented capture calls do not establish that either one is easier to maintain.
  • End-to-end tests: Playwright’s locator and auto-waiting patterns can reduce explicit waiting and synchronization code. That can make a test workflow easier to maintain, but not every screenshot script needs a test framework.
  • Visual regression: Playwright Test provides screenshot assertions and baselines. This avoids building every comparison step yourself, but expected images still need review and upkeep.
  • Existing Puppeteer automation: switching has a cost even when APIs are familiar. Playwright says most Puppeteer APIs can be used as is, while recommending some different patterns.

How do the full-page screenshot calls compare?

Playwright documents full-page capture with fullPage: true. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide uses Page.screenshot(); its guide also shows waiting for networkidle2 before capturing. These examples show the basic shape of each workflow, not a guarantee that a particular page is ready after a fixed wait.

Playwright

await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });

Playwright describes this option as capturing the full scrollable page. See the Playwright screenshot documentation.

Puppeteer

await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide documents Page.screenshot() and also offers ElementHandle.screenshot() when only a specific element is needed. Its example waits for networkidle2; use a readiness condition appropriate to the site rather than assuming that network quiet means every image or dynamic element has finished rendering. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide.

When does Playwright have a maintenance advantage?

When tests need to wait for UI state

Playwright recommends Locator objects and web-first assertions. Its migration guide notes that methods such as page.waitForNavigation and page.waitForSelector remain available, but are often unnecessary because of auto-waiting. This can reduce hand-written synchronization in tests, where brittle timing assumptions are a common source of upkeep. It does not mean every page operation is automatically ready for a screenshot: applications with delayed content may still need a specific wait condition.

The guide’s concise statement is: “Most Puppeteer APIs can be used as is.” That makes familiarity useful when evaluating a move, but it does not mean migration is cost-free; teams may still need to adapt names and patterns. See Playwright’s Puppeteer migration guide.

When screenshots are assertions

Playwright Test can capture a baseline and compare a later run with toHaveScreenshot(). This is useful when a changed layout should fail a test for review rather than silently overwrite the expected image. Baselines become another maintained artifact: intentional UI changes require reviewing and updating them.

Visual output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright advises using the same environment as the baseline. Keep browser and operating-system conditions consistent between baseline creation and CI comparison, and review baseline changes rather than accepting them blindly. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.

When is Puppeteer the simpler choice?

If your task is simply to open a page and save a full-page image, and your project already uses Puppeteer, there may be little maintenance benefit in changing libraries. The documented screenshot methods are both straightforward, and the available sources do not provide a measured comparison of maintenance effort.

Puppeteer is also reasonable when the existing team, runtime, and browser requirements are already served by its automation. The strongest evidence for choosing Playwright is its integrated test workflow, not proof that its basic screenshot call is inherently simpler.

How should you choose?

Your situation Practical choice Why
You only need a script that saves full-page images Either; prefer your current stack Both document direct screenshot calls; no measured maintenance winner is established.
You are building end-to-end tests that capture screenshots Playwright is a useful default Its locators and auto-waiting can reduce explicit synchronization code; this is an inference from documented workflow.
You need committed image baselines and visual assertions Playwright Test is a strong fit It has screenshot assertions and baseline support; plan for baseline review and consistent test environments.
You already maintain Puppeteer automation Keep Puppeteer unless a concrete need justifies migration Existing working code may outweigh Playwright’s test-integrated conveniences.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need screenshots as an API rather than browser automation code, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. One GET request returns an image or PDF, and its documentation covers the API parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Playwright automatically capture the entire page?

Yes. Set fullPage: true in the screenshot options.

Does Puppeteer support screenshots of a single element?

Yes. Its screenshot guide documents ElementHandle.screenshot() in addition to page screenshots.

Is there a published maintenance benchmark proving one library is easier?

The cited official documentation does not provide a measured head-to-head maintenance comparison.
