Test the connection and a representative stream before going live, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast. There is no single bitrate that guarantees stability on every phone or mobile network.
Choose settings that fit your upload connection
Download speed is not the number to use when setting up a live stream: the video travels from your phone to YouTube, so upload capacity matters. Run an upload speed test where you plan to stream. Treat the result as a guide, not a guarantee—mobile and shared connections can fluctuate after the test.
When upload is limited, reduce the stream’s demands in this order: lower resolution, use 30 fps, then select a bitrate that leaves spare capacity below the upload speed you can sustain. A bitrate at the top of a recommendation range may still fail if the connection dips or other devices are using the network.
| Output | YouTube-listed video bitrate | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.3–3 Mbps | A practical low-resolution starting point when bandwidth is constrained. |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.3–3 Mbps | Consider when 480p is still unstable and a softer image is acceptable. |
These are YouTube’s encoder-guidance ranges, accessed in 2026, not measured guarantees for a particular phone or network. Choose within the applicable range based on stable upload and test results; do not assume the maximum will work on a weak connection. YouTube’s live encoder settings

Change the settings in Streamlabs Mobile
- Measure upload speed. Test the Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection at the location where you will broadcast. If several people or devices share the connection, their activity can affect the stream.
- Open Mobile Streaming Settings. Streamlabs’ mobile guide identifies output resolution, expected frame rate and maximum bitrate as adjustable controls. Menu labels and available settings can vary by app version, operating system and streaming mode.
- Set 30 fps and lower the resolution. Start with 480p if the connection can sustain it; try 360p if the test remains unstable. Lower resolution reduces image detail, while a lower frame rate reduces motion smoothness.
- Set a conservative maximum bitrate. Use YouTube’s range for the chosen resolution as context, but leave headroom beneath upload capacity that appears stable in testing. A brief speed-test peak is not a reliable target.
- Test with realistic content. Stream a private or unlisted test with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast. If it stutters or YouTube reports problems, lower the output demands and test again.
- Monitor stream health while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicator and messages during the event, and adjust if connection problems appear.
Streamlabs’ Mobile Streaming Settings guide also lists audio, camera and screen-capture controls. Its guide confirms mobile controls for resolution, frame rate and maximum bitrate; it does not establish that every advanced encoder setting is available in the app.
How YouTube’s encoder guidance applies to a phone
YouTube’s live encoder guide recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. It also specifies AAC or MP3 audio and gives audio guidance for supported configurations. These are platform-level encoder recommendations, not proof that Streamlabs Mobile exposes each option. For the mobile workflow, focus first on the controls the app guide identifies: resolution, frame rate and maximum bitrate.

YouTube advises matching stream quality to the available internet connection, testing before an event, and monitoring stream health. The applicable bitrate depends on the stability of your upload and the actual test—not just the resolution label.
Improve reliability without changing the video settings
- Prefer a stable Wi-Fi connection when one is available, or test mobile data at the exact place you intend to stream.
- Reduce competing network activity where practical. Other users and devices sharing a connection can make streaming less reliable.
- Check whether Streamlabs Mobile offers Network Boost in your installed app and whether your connection setup supports it. Streamlabs describes it as using multiple connections to support a stream when Wi-Fi or cellular service changes; availability and requirements may vary, and it is not a guaranteed fix.
- A tripod or phone clamp can help keep framing hands-free, but it does not improve upload speed or prevent connection drops.
Troubleshoot a weak or unstable stream
| What you notice | What to check | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Stream stutters or drops frames | Upload stability, competing devices and YouTube stream-health messages. | Lower bitrate and resolution; retest on the intended network. |
| A speed test looks good, but the broadcast struggles | Whether the test captured a brief peak rather than sustained upload; whether network use changed afterward. | Test for longer with representative movement and audio, leave more upload headroom, and reduce output demands. |
| 480p is not stable | Whether the connection can reliably sustain the selected bitrate. | Try 360p at 30 fps and a more conservative bitrate within YouTube’s listed range. |
| Problems begin when other people connect or start using the network | Shared Wi-Fi or mobile hotspot activity. | Reduce competing traffic, use a less-congested stable connection if possible, and repeat the test. |
| You cannot find a suggested setting or Network Boost | App version, operating system and streaming mode. | Check the current Mobile Streaming Settings in your installed app; menu names and feature availability can differ. |
Or let it run in the cloud
The settings above are for streaming directly from your phone. If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a live phone camera. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
