For a documented way to loop pre-recorded video into YouTube Live, XSplit Broadcaster is the clearer choice: it has a YouTube output workflow and supports looping video in a scene. VLC can repeat a clip or loop a playlist, but the available documentation does not establish a complete VLC-to-YouTube Live broadcast workflow. The tools are therefore not interchangeable: VLC handles playback looping; XSplit documents both scene composition and YouTube output.

VLC vs XSplit: what each one does for this job

What matters VLC XSplit Broadcaster
Looping VideoLAN documentation describes repeat-current-item and loop-playlist modes. The controls and labels can vary by interface and operating system. VideoLAN documentation XSplit describes looping images or videos within a scene, including for BRB screens or sponsor displays. This supports scene looping, but does not by itself demonstrate every always-on prerecorded-stream setup. XSplit Broadcaster
YouTube Live output The available documentation establishes playback looping, not a current, complete direct YouTube Live output workflow. XSplit provides a documented YouTube Live output setup, including broadcast details and starting the output. XSplit: Streaming to YouTube Live
Scenes and sources Not established for this exact streaming workflow. XSplit uses scenes and sources to compose the stream and select an output. XSplit: Getting Started with XSplit Broadcaster
Connection options Do not assume VLC itself accepts YouTube stream credentials based on its documented loop controls. XSplit documents a native YouTube output and a custom RTMP option for destinations without a dedicated output. XSplit: How to Setup your Stream
Reliability and performance No comparative evidence establishes reliability, sustained uptime, or CPU/GPU use. No comparative evidence establishes reliability, sustained uptime, or CPU/GPU use.

Choose based on whether you need playback or a broadcast workflow

Choose VLC to repeat media locally

If your task is simply to repeat one video or cycle a playlist for playback, VLC’s loop and repeat controls address that need. The controls differ across VLC interfaces and operating systems, so follow the labels in your installed version rather than assuming a specific menu path.

Choose XSplit for a documented YouTube Live setup

If you need a composed scene and a documented YouTube output path, XSplit is the better-supported choice in the available documentation. Its workflow combines sources in a scene, configures a YouTube broadcast, and starts the output. XSplit’s looping description supports looping media within a scene, but does not guarantee that a particular continuous-stream setup will run indefinitely.

Set up an XSplit YouTube Live broadcast with a looping video

  1. Confirm that YouTube Live is available for your channel. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check channel status in YouTube Studio well before the planned broadcast; YouTube’s account requirements and restrictions can change. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
  2. Prepare the video and scene. In XSplit Broadcaster, create or select a scene and add the video as a source. Arrange any other sources you need in the scene. XSplit’s documentation describes scenes and sources, and its product information says images or videos can be looped within a scene. Confirm the loop behavior in your installed version before relying on it for a broadcast. Getting Started with XSplit Broadcaster
  3. Configure YouTube as the output. Follow XSplit’s YouTube Live setup guide to select the YouTube output and provide the broadcast details it requests. XSplit also documents custom RTMP for destinations without a dedicated output, but YouTube has a native output in the documented workflow. Streaming to YouTube Live How to Setup your Stream
  4. Start the broadcast from XSplit. Use the output controls in XSplit’s YouTube guide to start the stream, then confirm in YouTube Studio that the expected broadcast is live. Do not treat a successful local preview as proof that YouTube is receiving the stream.

If you need to use VLC

VLC can loop the media, but the evidence available for this comparison does not verify a complete current VLC-to-YouTube Live configuration. In VLC, use the playback controls for either repeat-current-item or loop-playlist behavior, depending on whether you are repeating one clip or cycling a playlist. Those controls alone do not establish that VLC can connect to YouTube, encode a broadcast, or publish it. For the YouTube encoder workflow, YouTube documents using a stream URL and stream key when the encoder does not offer direct YouTube setup; do not assume VLC accepts those credentials without current, version-specific documentation. Check copyright and YouTube eligibility before going live

A technically working loop does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. Use video and audio you own or are authorized to use, and check YouTube’s current policies and your channel’s live-stream eligibility before scheduling a broadcast. A looped recording should not be presented as a live camera feed if it is prerecorded. YouTube describes encoder streams as a way to share a screen or broadcast gameplay; that description does not endorse VLC or XSplit. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Troubleshooting

  • You cannot start a YouTube broadcast: verify live streaming is enabled for the channel and check YouTube Studio for account restrictions. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube Help
  • The video stops instead of repeating: confirm the loop setting in the installed player or XSplit scene, and distinguish repeat-current-item from looping an entire playlist in VLC. Interface labels vary by operating system and version. VideoLAN documentation
  • You see the scene locally but no YouTube stream: confirm that the YouTube output is selected and started in XSplit, and check the broadcast status in YouTube Studio. A preview by itself does not establish a live output.
  • You are trying to connect VLC using YouTube credentials: the documented VLC loop controls do not establish the required YouTube encoder connection. Use a verified encoder workflow rather than inferring that playback-loop controls are a broadcast output.
  • You want to know which application is more reliable or uses less CPU: the documentation cited here does not provide comparative tests for sustained uptime, reliability, or resource use. Those claims require testing under your own setup.
