Possibly—if the VPS only relays an already encoded stream and its transfer allowance and network terms support continuous traffic. A $5 price tag alone cannot establish that. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, continuous video alone works out to about 1.62 TB per 30 days at 720p30 or 3.24 TB at 1080p30, before audio and network overhead. Encoding or transforming video on the VPS is a different, more demanding job.
What the VPS has to do
Relaying an encoded stream
A relay forwards an incoming, already encoded feed to YouTube. The nginx-rtmp-module documents publishing streams to remote servers with the push directive. This is the simpler workload, but it still depends on sustained network capacity, outbound-transfer limits, and a working module installation. The directive reference also documents push_reconnect; its cited default timeout is three seconds. Treat the community project wiki as implementation guidance, not a guarantee of service recovery.
Encoding or transforming video
If the VPS must encode, transcode, or composite video, it is doing more than forwarding packets. The module reference describes exec_push for launching an external process such as FFmpeg, including for transcoding. Do not assume that a plan adequate for a relay will also handle that workload. The available evidence establishes no universal CPU or memory minimum for this setup, so test the exact workload on the exact plan rather than relying on a generic VPS specification.
Estimate the traffic before choosing a plan
YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 720p30, 10 Mbps for 1080p30, and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. The table converts those video bitrates into continuous-traffic estimates using decimal units and 30 days (2,592,000 seconds). These are calculations, not YouTube-published plan-consumption figures.

Actual usage can be higher because these estimates exclude audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and other traffic. Leave headroom rather than treating the video-only result as the exact allowance needed. Decimal TB is not binary TiB.
Check the provider’s actual terms
Before buying, compare the estimate with the specific plan’s included monthly outbound transfer and confirm how the provider handles overages or throttling. Also check the sustained network policy and any fair-use terms: an allowance printed on a plan page does not by itself establish that continuous streaming is permitted or that the necessary throughput will be sustained. Check the renewal price, support and recovery options, and the route from the VPS region to the YouTube ingest endpoint. No particular $5 plan’s current terms or measured performance are established here.

Configure YouTube ingest for a relay
- Choose the intended output. Decide on resolution and frame rate, then use YouTube’s corresponding encoder recommendation. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps at 720p30, 10 Mbps at 1080p30, and 12 Mbps at 1080p60.
- Use the recommended encoder settings. YouTube’s general encoder guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum interval of four seconds. These are ingest recommendations; they do not establish that a particular VPS has enough network capacity.
- Get the ingest details from YouTube. Obtain the stream URL and stream key in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS. Its RTMPS guide requires the
rtmpsprotocol, a valid YouTube endpoint and application path, and port 443. Use the endpoint YouTube provides rather than guessing or copying one from an unrelated configuration. - Verify NGINX RTMP support on the selected image. Check compatibility and installation instructions for the VPS operating system and the exact NGINX package or build. NGINX’s module documentation describes installing the NGINX Plus RTMP package; it does not establish that a distribution’s default community NGINX package includes the module. Do not treat a generic NGINX installation as proof that RTMP support is present.
- Protect the publishing endpoint. Do not leave an unrestricted public publish endpoint. The module directives reference describes allow/deny controls, but it is not a complete hardened deployment guide. Restrict who can publish and protect the YouTube stream key; anyone who obtains the key may be able to broadcast to the channel’s stream.
- Test and monitor. Test with representative motion and audio before relying on a 24/7 run, then watch YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health. A short test can expose configuration or route problems, but it cannot prove uninterrupted performance over a month.
What “24/7” means for reliability and archives
A continuous stream depends on more than NGINX: the input must remain available, the VPS must sustain the outbound feed, the module and process must stay healthy, and YouTube must continue accepting the ingest. A $5 plan’s price does not establish any of those conditions. Confirm the provider’s policy and run a representative test; no benchmark or success-rate data establishes that every low-cost VPS will work.
YouTube’s encoder help says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not settle exactly how YouTube archives one uninterrupted 24-hour event, so do not assume it will produce one complete archive. If an archive matters, verify YouTube’s current behavior for the intended stream setup.
