For a 24/7 YouTube stream, the upload speed you need depends on PRISM’s output resolution, frame rate and codec—not simply on how long the stream runs. For a typical desktop setup using H.264, plan for about 17 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity for 1080p30, or about 21 Mbps for 1080p60. Those targets apply YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth reserve to its recommended video bitrates. They are planning figures, not a guarantee that a broadband plan will deliver steady upload speed around the clock.

Upload-speed targets by resolution, frame rate and codec

YouTube’s recommended ingestion bitrate is the starting point. Add 20% headroom to estimate the available upload capacity to reserve for the stream. The targets below are calculated by multiplying YouTube’s video-bitrate recommendations by 1.2 and rounding upward where useful. YouTube recommends leaving room because a stream needs more than its nominal video bitrate; its guidance also says total bitrate for primary and backup streams must fit within upload bandwidth. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations and YouTube’s streaming tips.

Output Codec YouTube-recommended video bitrate Upload capacity with 20% headroom
1080p30 H.264 14 Mbps 16.8 Mbps (plan for about 17 Mbps)
1080p30 AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 10 Mbps 12 Mbps
1080p60 H.264 17 Mbps 20.4 Mbps (plan for about 21 Mbps)
1080p60 AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 12 Mbps 14.4 Mbps (plan for about 15 Mbps)
720p30 H.264 8 Mbps 9.6 Mbps (plan for about 10 Mbps)
720p30 AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 6 Mbps 7.2 Mbps (plan for about 8 Mbps)
720p60 H.264 8 Mbps 9.6 Mbps (plan for about 10 Mbps)
720p60 AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) 6 Mbps 7.2 Mbps (plan for about 8 Mbps)

For multiple simultaneous streams, add their bitrates together before allowing headroom. These are YouTube recommendations, not a separate PRISM speed requirement or a measured minimum for every network. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). See YouTube’s encoder settings.

How to check whether your connection can sustain the stream

Measure available upload capacity under realistic conditions

  1. Choose the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to use in PRISM, then look up the corresponding YouTube bitrate above.
  2. Run a speed test while the home or work network is being used as it normally will be. YouTube recommends testing your upload bitrate. A single result is only a snapshot: other users, devices and network fluctuations can reduce the capacity available to PRISM.
  3. Compare the measured upload capacity available to the streaming computer—not just the internet plan’s advertised speed—with the headroom target. If capacity is tight or inconsistent, reduce resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again.
  4. Once live, watch YouTube’s stream health indicators. A speed test cannot guarantee stable delivery throughout a continuous broadcast.

The 20% reserve is a planning allowance, not an additional video bitrate setting. For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream uses YouTube’s recommended 14 Mbps video bitrate; the approximate 17 Mbps target is the available upload capacity to keep clear for it.

Set PRISM Desktop’s output to match your connection

PRISM Desktop puts bitrate under Settings > Output when Output Mode: Advanced is selected. Set resolution and frame rate in Settings > Video. PRISM advises reducing resolution, bitrate and FPS if high settings strain the computer or network. If the computer has a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, PRISM recommends using its hardware encoder. See PRISM Desktop’s live-streaming guide.

  • Keep the output codec and bitrate aligned with the YouTube recommendations for the chosen profile.
  • Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval in the encoder settings where available, following YouTube’s guidance.
  • If delivery is unstable, lower one or more output demands, then check stream health again rather than assuming a faster advertised plan will fix every issue.

PRISM’s mobile guidance gives 4 Mbps as a general 720p recommendation and 6 Mbps for 1080p, with adaptive bitrate. Those figures are for PRISM mobile guidance; they are not substitutes for YouTube’s desktop encoder bitrate recommendations. PRISM’s separate mobile stability guidance also describes resolution-based ranges and advises at least twice the listed network bandwidth, but that is mobile-specific rather than a universal PRISM Desktop threshold. See PRISM’s mobile streaming guide and PRISM’s mobile stability guidance.

Fix common upload and disconnection problems

Symptom Likely cause What to try
YouTube reports unstable stream health or the stream disconnects Insufficient available upload capacity, an unstable local network or weak Wi-Fi Test upload under realistic use, reduce bitrate or output profile if needed, and use wired LAN if Wi-Fi is weak or unstable.
Speed test looks adequate, but the stream still drops The test may not reflect the capacity available during the broadcast; other network use or local instability can interfere Repeat the test at a representative busy time, check for concurrent uploads, and monitor YouTube’s stream health while live.
Lowering bitrate does not resolve the issue Resolution, frame rate or PC performance may also be too demanding Lower resolution or FPS in Settings > Video; consider PRISM’s recommended hardware encoder when a dedicated NVIDIA or AMD GPU is available.

PRISM identifies insufficient upload speed, unstable local networking and weak Wi-Fi as possible causes of disconnections, and recommends wired LAN for more consistent transmission. Ethernet can improve the connection between the computer and router, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by the internet service. See PRISM’s streaming-issues guide.

A 24/7 live feed is not the same as a complete 24-hour replay

The bitrate calculation does not increase just because a stream runs longer. Continuous duration does create a separate archive risk: YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete replay, make a local recording plan rather than relying only on YouTube’s archive. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
