There is no single best PRISM Live Studio bitrate for every Indian broadband connection. Test upload speed on the device and connection you will stream with, then choose a bitrate that remains stable for your selected resolution, frame rate and encoder. PRISM and YouTube publish different recommendations for some settings, so use one source’s figures consistently rather than treating them as a universal guarantee.
How to choose a bitrate for your connection
- Test upload speed where you will stream. Run a speed test on the same computer or phone, using the same Wi-Fi or wired connection and at a similar time of day. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate; a speed-test result is a snapshot, not a guarantee that the connection will sustain that rate throughout a stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
- Choose resolution and frame rate. 1080p60 requires more bitrate than 1080p30, and higher output demands also put more strain on the computer and network. PRISM advises lowering resolution, bitrate or FPS when performance is poor. PRISM’s desktop performance guide.
- Use the matching encoder recommendation. The appropriate figure depends on whether you stream with H.264 or AV1/H.265, as well as resolution and frame rate. The official PRISM and YouTube tables do not always match; the figures below identify their source.
- Test a real stream before an important broadcast. Watch for dropped frames, buffering or unstable output, and adjust settings if needed. No universal upload-headroom percentage is specified in the official guidance cited here.
These are global PRISM and YouTube recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband performance. The official guidance cited does not establish an India-wide upload-speed benchmark.
Desktop PRISM and YouTube bitrate recommendations
The table separates recommendations published by PRISM’s desktop FAQ and YouTube Help. Values are settings guidance, not guarantees for a particular ISP or stream. Both pages were accessed in 2026; publication dates are not stated in the cited pages.
| Output | Encoder | PRISM desktop recommendation | YouTube Help recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | H.264 | 12,000 kbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 10,000 kbps | not stated for this combination in the cited YouTube figures |
| 720p60 | H.264 | 8,000 kbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | AV1/H.265 | 4,000–10,000 kbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1/H.265 | 3,000–8,000 kbps for 1080p | not stated for this combination in the cited YouTube figures |
| 720p60 | AV1/H.265 | 3,000–8,000 kbps for the listed lower-resolution category | 6 Mbps |
PRISM’s published H.264 desktop FAQ also lists 4,000 kbps for the 240p–720p category. Its listed AV1/H.265 range is 3,000–8,000 kbps for 1080p and the listed lower-resolution category; do not interpret that range as one required setting for every output.

Keyframe and rate-control settings
For H.264, PRISM’s desktop FAQ specifies CBR and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Apply those settings when available in your desktop encoder configuration, alongside the bitrate that matches the output you selected. PRISM’s published figures are its recommendations; they are not a test of your broadband connection.

PRISM Live Studio on a phone
PRISM’s mobile guide gives general starting points of 4,000 kbps at 720p and 6,000 kbps at 1080p. These are mobile guidance, not the desktop YouTube table above. The guide says adaptive bitrate adjusts stream quality to network conditions and recommends that new streamers leave it on. If a mobile stream is not smooth, lower resolution and frame rate gradually. PRISM’s mobile streaming guide.
If the stream is unstable
- Bitrate demand exceeds what the connection sustains: reduce bitrate, then consider lowering resolution or frame rate. Do not assume a speed-test peak will be continuously available.
- Wi-Fi between the streaming device and router is unreliable: on desktop, try an Ethernet cable if practical. A wired local connection can avoid a weak Wi-Fi link, but it cannot add upstream capacity that your broadband service does not provide.
- The computer struggles at the selected output: reduce resolution, bitrate or FPS. PRISM notes that all three can put strain on both the PC and network bandwidth.
- A phone stream fluctuates with network conditions: keep PRISM mobile adaptive bitrate enabled, or reduce resolution and frame rate gradually if the stream remains unsmooth.
- The selected settings came from different tables: verify encoder and output, then follow one source’s recommendation set at a time. PRISM’s and YouTube’s published values differ for some combinations.
