For a local video file, match its resolution to the stream output and test hardware decoding; inspect the streaming encoder and try a faster preset or a supported hardware encoder. Reduce sources, output settings, and competing apps one change at a time. Looping alone does not establish the cause, and high CPU use by itself is not evidence that you need new hardware.
Start by identifying the video source
Check whether the repeated video is a local file added as a PRISM Media Source or content captured through a Browser source. These are different workloads, so do not assume they will use the same amount of CPU. PRISM’s recommendations for local media include matching the file’s resolution to the transmission resolution and, where suitable, using hardware decoding. If you are capturing a browser, test that source separately rather than applying local-file settings to it.
Find out whether rendering or encoding is the bottleneck
Watch PRISM’s frame-drop notification while the stream is running. A slow-rendering warning points toward the workload PRISM must render from sources and scenes; a poor-encoding warning points toward the encoder’s ability to produce the stream. The notice helps choose a troubleshooting direction, but by itself it does not establish a YouTube network fault. PRISM’s performance guide also notes that multiple running programs can significantly affect CPU, GPU, and memory use.
Open Task Manager and observe CPU and GPU usage while the problem occurs. Close other resource-intensive applications, then add or enable sources one at a time to see which change increases resource use. This is more informative than changing several settings together.

Reduce the workload from the video source
For a local Media Source
- Open the local video source’s properties in PRISM and check the media resolution.
- Set the stream output resolution to match the video where practical, avoiding unnecessary scaling.
- If the GPU has more available capacity than the CPU, test Use hardware decoding when possible in the source properties.
- Run the same scene again and compare CPU and GPU usage. Hardware decoding can shift work to the GPU, so make sure GPU usage does not become the new constraint.
For a Browser source
Test the browser capture independently: temporarily disable other sources or simplify the scene, then observe whether CPU use changes. PRISM’s remedies depend on source type; the local-file resolution-matching and decoding advice is not a substitute for diagnosing a browser capture.
Check PRISM’s streaming encoder
- Open Settings > Output > Advanced and inspect the streaming encoder currently selected.
- If you are using x264 or x265 software encoding, test PRISM’s recommended veryfast CPU usage preset. A slower preset uses more CPU.
- If your computer has a compatible NVIDIA or AMD graphics card, test its available hardware encoder. The encoder name depends on the graphics card and system.
- Stream a representative scene and compare resource use and output. Hardware encoding can shift work away from the CPU, but the graphics card still needs enough capacity for rendering and other GPU tasks.
Changing the encoder is not a guaranteed fix: first confirm what PRISM is using and whether the machine has a usable hardware encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the general connection process: enter YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key in the encoder. They are setup guidance, not a PRISM CPU remedy.

Lower output demands and simplify the scene
If CPU use or frame drops persist, reduce the workload incrementally. PRISM recommends lowering output resolution, bitrate, or FPS, closing demanding programs, and reducing sources. Make one adjustment at a time, then check both whether the warning changes and whether the stream still looks acceptable.
- FPS: If 60 FPS is producing slow-rendering drops, try 30 FPS.
- Resolution: Lower the output resolution if the computer cannot sustain the current output.
- Bitrate: Reduce it if needed, while checking that the resulting stream quality remains suitable.
- Sources and scenes: Disable sources you do not need and simplify nested or busy scenes; test additions individually.
- Other applications: Close resource-intensive programs and check Task Manager again.
When is a hardware upgrade justified?
Do not buy a graphics card based on CPU usage alone. A hardware encoder is a reasonable option to investigate only if PRISM is using CPU software encoding, the computer lacks a usable hardware encoder or the available hardware lacks capacity, and a proposed card is compatible with the system. Compatibility depends on details such as the computer, operating system, and available power and space; without those details, no particular model can be recommended.
