To stream a Tamil video playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, put the files in a concat-demuxer playlist, verify they have compatible streams, then send the output to the RTMPS address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Use streamcopy only when the files are compatible; otherwise normalize or re-encode them. Test privately or unlisted before making the broadcast public.
Before you start
- Install an FFmpeg build that supports the formats in your files and RTMPS output.
- Keep the Tamil video files accessible from the machine running FFmpeg, with enough reliable upload capacity for the selected stream quality.
- Have access to the YouTube channel’s Live Control Room and create or schedule the event before sending video.
- Use only video and audio you own or have permission to broadcast. Tamil-language content is subject to the same rights rules as any other content.
Prepare the playlist in the order you want it to play
Create a plain-text file named playlist.txt in the directory where you will run FFmpeg. Add one file directive per video, in playback order:

file 'video-03.mp4'Use paths that resolve from FFmpeg’s working directory, or provide full paths. Spaces and special characters in filenames need appropriate quoting or escaping; if parsing fails, simplify the filenames or carefully escape them according to the FFmpeg concat-demuxer documentation.
The concat demuxer joins files by adjusting timestamps so the first input starts at zero and later inputs follow. FFmpeg’s documentation says all files must have the same streams, codecs, and time base. Unequal audio and video lengths can leave gaps, and incorrect or truncated duration metadata can cause artifacts. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Choose streamcopy or re-encoding
Use streamcopy only for compatible inputs
Streamcopy with -c copy avoids decoding and another lossy encode. It is a good option when the playlist files have compatible stream layouts, codecs, time bases, and output characteristics, and YouTube accepts those source codecs. It cannot apply filters, and it is not a general-purpose fix for mismatched files.
Normalize files that do not match
If the clips differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, time base, or audio layout, normalize or re-encode them to a common target before combining them. Re-encoding is also necessary if you need filters or the destination cannot use the source codec. FFmpeg explains the distinction in its command-line documentation. Test transitions and audio after conversion; re-encoding adds processing and can reduce quality if the settings are unsuitable.

Create the YouTube Live destination
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream.
- Open the event’s Stream settings and reveal the stream key if it is hidden.
- Copy the RTMPS URL and stream key. Prefer RTMPS, YouTube’s secure ingest option, rather than the ordinary RTMP address. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions describe where to find the destination details.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it in screenshots, paste it into a public log, or commit it to a shared script. Use a placeholder in examples and substitute the real value only in your own environment.
Some encoders accept the RTMPS URL and stream name/key as separate fields; others expect the key appended to the URL as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the format expected by your FFmpeg command and the destination details in Live Control Room. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation describes its ingest streams and protocols.
Set the output to match your media and connection
YouTube’s current encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30; those are specific recommendations, not universal bitrates for every codec, resolution, or frame rate. Check the YouTube encoder settings for the current values that apply to your output.

Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, and keep the output compatible with the source. Do not assume a higher bitrate will improve a low-quality source or that a connection’s advertised maximum is sustainable. YouTube recommends testing before starting the live stream.
Start a playlist stream with FFmpeg
The following example uses streamcopy and is appropriate only when the files are concat-compatible and their streams are accepted by YouTube. Replace the destination placeholder with the RTMPS URL and key format required by your setup. Never publish a command containing your real key.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy -f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"-re reads the prerecorded input at its native frame rate, which helps pace media for live output. -stream_loop -1 requests an infinite loop of the input. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so input options such as -re and -stream_loop belong before the relevant -i. These options do not guarantee a stable broadcast; test your actual files and FFmpeg build. See the FFmpeg documentation.
-safe 0 permits paths outside the concat demuxer’s restricted safe-path form. Use it only with a playlist you control; do not point FFmpeg at an untrusted list of paths. If your files are in the current directory and use simple relative names, you may be able to omit it.

Test before making the event public
- Start FFmpeg while the YouTube event is in a private or unlisted test state, if available for your channel and event.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, aspect ratio, and transitions between playlist items.
- Review YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm the bitrate and connection remain stable through representative moving video and audio.
- Stop and adjust the playlist, encoding, or network setup if the preview is blank, audio is missing, or the stream is unstable. Once the test is satisfactory, begin or schedule the public broadcast as appropriate.
Rights and live-stream interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. A stream can be interrupted or terminated for copyright or Community Guidelines issues. Use your own work or obtain the necessary rights and permissions for every video and audio track in the playlist. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
