To run XSplit Broadcaster into a YouTube stream from a VPS, use YouTube’s current RTMPS stream URL and stream key, then match XSplit’s output settings to YouTube’s encoder recommendations and the VPS’s sustained upload capacity. Start with a private or unlisted test. A VPS does not by itself establish that XSplit will run reliably in that host’s Windows, graphics, and restart environment, and YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours—not an uninterrupted 24/7 session.

Choose an XSplit output and get YouTube’s credentials

XSplit offers two practical routes: its dedicated YouTube output, or a Custom RTMP output. With Custom RTMP, XSplit’s setup guide asks for an RTMP URL and a stream name; enter YouTube’s current RTMPS URL and the stream key in the corresponding fields. YouTube recommends RTMPS because it encrypts the connection. Treat the stream key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, publish it, or share it, and reset it in YouTube Live Control Room if it is exposed. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and XSplit’s setup guide.

  1. Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Confirm this before troubleshooting encoder settings. YouTube live-streaming tips.
  2. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or open the stream you intend to use, then copy its current RTMPS stream URL and stream key.
  3. Configure XSplit. Select its YouTube output if you want the dedicated route, or create a Custom RTMP output and enter the URL and key. In XSplit’s Custom RTMP setup, the credential field is labelled “Stream Name.”
  4. Set the encoder values. Choose the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, rate control, and keyframe interval using YouTube’s current table and the capacity you have measured on the VPS.
  5. Test before scheduling. Run a private or unlisted stream with representative audio and motion; check YouTube’s stream health and confirm the VPS can sustain the outgoing bitrate.
  6. Plan recording and recovery separately. Test how you will reconnect after an interruption and preserve a recording if viewers need an on-demand copy; a 24/7 live session is not covered by YouTube’s under-12-hour archive guidance.

YouTube-recommended encoder settings to start with

Use the current YouTube encoder settings table for the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec; YouTube provides different recommendations for H.264, AV1, and H.265. These H.264 recommendations are useful starting points, not a substitute for checking the live table before publishing or testing the VPS.

Output H.264 recommended bitrate
720p, 30 fps 6 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 17 Mbps
  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS is listed by YouTube; use RTMPS where available for an encrypted connection.
  • Rate control: YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: set a two-second interval as recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: choose values that match your source and the YouTube table. Higher resolution or frame rate raises the bandwidth requirement.

Check the VPS before committing to continuous streaming

YouTube advises testing the stream, watching stream health, and providing upload bandwidth above the stream’s needs. Its network tips recommend 20% headroom over the combined primary and backup bitrates. For a stream with no backup encoder, do not treat a provider’s advertised port speed as proof that the VPS can sustain the bitrate; check actual, sustained outbound capacity and reliability. A network interruption can break a stream. YouTube’s streaming network tips.

XSplit’s published minimum requirements include Windows 10 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, and a GeForce- or Radeon-class graphics card supporting DirectX 10.1 or better. The page lists a second-generation Core i5 equivalent as minimum and a second-generation Core i7 equivalent as recommended; it lists 500 kbps minimum upload for its lowest streaming settings and 5 Mbps recommended upload for HD. These are desktop software requirements, not a guarantee that a particular cloud VM works. Check that your VPS actually supplies a supported Windows environment, compatible graphics or encoding capability, reliable sustained upload, and permission for a persistent workload. The reviewed official sources do not establish compatibility with a particular hypervisor or provider. XSplit Broadcaster requirements.

For a plain pre-recorded continuous feed, a VPS may be able to send a prepared output, but the reviewed sources do not establish a supported XSplit server or headless mode, a reliable VPS size or GPU, or continuous-operation and restart behavior. Validate the exact host and workflow rather than assuming that an ordinary VPS will run unattended.

What 24/7 means for YouTube archives

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not promise a full archive for one stream lasting 24 hours or longer. If viewers need an on-demand recording, plan a local or separate recording and test the complete workflow; do not rely on the automatic archive as your only copy. The reviewed official guidance does not specify archive behavior for one continuous session beyond 12 hours or an uninterrupted 24/7 operating procedure. YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.

Troubleshooting XSplit Broadcaster RTMP settings

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: confirm the channel is eligible, the stream is open in Live Control Room, and the current URL and key were copied correctly. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update XSplit.
  • The connection is unstable or stream health is poor: measure sustained VPS outbound bandwidth, lower the bitrate or output settings to fit available capacity, and retest with YouTube stream health visible. Allow the recommended headroom rather than matching the stream bitrate exactly to the VPS’s nominal port speed.
  • The output does not match YouTube’s settings: check that XSplit uses CBR, the selected codec’s current bitrate recommendation, and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds). Recheck YouTube’s current table if you change codec, resolution, or frame rate.
  • XSplit fails or performs inconsistently on the VPS: compare the actual Windows, RAM, graphics/encoding support, and persistent-workload permissions with XSplit’s published requirements. A provider label or advertised GPU does not establish supported operation; confirm with the provider and test the specific VM.
  • The live session ends or does not reconnect: do not assume the reviewed guidance guarantees continuous reconnects. Test the recovery process on the chosen setup and arrange a separate recording if the content must remain available.
  • The stream is live but no complete replay appears: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers sessions under 12 hours, not a single 24/7 session. Use the independent recording plan rather than treating this as an encoder bitrate fault.
