For a straightforward loop of a prerecorded video, OBS is the easier choice: add a Media Source, select the file, and turn on Loop. GStreamer is better suited to a custom, pipeline-driven workflow, but its official RTMP documentation is a building block—not a complete recipe for looping a file to YouTube Live. Neither option has a documented advantage in stream quality or reliability; test the setup you plan to use.
OBS or GStreamer: which should you choose?
| Decision | OBS | GStreamer |
|---|---|---|
| Loop one local video | Direct UI option: enable Loop on a Media Source. | Requires a pipeline or application configuration; the official references do not provide a complete loop-to-YouTube recipe. |
| Loop a playlist | VLC Video source supports playlists and has Loop Playlist enabled by default. VLC must be installed. | Can be assembled from framework elements, but behavior depends on the chosen elements and plugins. |
| Workflow | GUI-oriented setup using scenes, media sources, and stream output settings. | Pipeline- and application-oriented control for custom processing or automation. |
| Comparative quality or reliability evidence | No head-to-head test or guarantee of seamless loop boundaries is established. | No head-to-head test or guarantee of seamless loop boundaries is established. |
Choose OBS when you want the shortest path from a local clip to a repeatable YouTube stream. Choose GStreamer when you need to construct a custom media pipeline and are prepared to validate its source handling, timestamps, encoding, muxing, and network output.
Loop a prerecorded video with OBS
- Create a scene: in OBS, create or select a scene, then add a Media Source.
- Select the file and enable looping: choose the local video file and turn on Loop in the source properties. OBS documents support for MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
- For a playlist, use VLC Video: add the VLC Video source, select the playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled if you want it to repeat. This source requires VLC to be installed.
- Set the YouTube destination: configure OBS for YouTube or enter the destination URL and stream key supplied by YouTube Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS when the selected output path supports it. Keep the key private; it authorizes streaming to your channel.
- Check output settings: select a supported codec and resolution, use CBR, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds as YouTube recommends (do not exceed four seconds). Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Preview and test: inspect video and audio, watch the transition from the end of the file back to its start, and check YouTube’s stream preview and health before relying on a long broadcast.
Build a looping YouTube stream with GStreamer
GStreamer gives you control over a media pipeline, but a working YouTube loop is not a single documented command. The official rtmpsink reference demonstrates sending FLV content to an RTMP server using an encoder, flvmux, and the sink. You still need to choose and validate the file source, decoding or processing path, looping mechanism, audio/video encoding, and timestamp behavior.
- Check the installed build: confirm that the required source, decoder, encoder, muxer, and RTMP sink plugins are available. Do not assume every GStreamer package includes
rtmpsink. - Design the playback and loop: configure the chosen source or application to repeat the file. GStreamer applications can manage data through elements such as
appsrc, but the application-development guidance forappsrcis not a file-loop recipe. Validate how your implementation handles end-of-file, timestamps, and restarting playback. - Encode and mux: build a pipeline that produces compatible audio and video, encodes them with settings appropriate for YouTube, and muxes them to FLV for the RTMP sink.
- Configure the destination: retrieve the URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS. The
rtmpsinkreference says it uses librtmp and accepts protocols that library supports, so verify that your installed sink and librtmp build support the endpoint you intend to use. - Validate ingest settings: check codec, bitrate, CBR, frame rate, keyframe interval, timestamps, and audio continuity. Test with the actual file and endpoint before using the pipeline for a long stream.
Use YouTube ingest settings that match the stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options; frame rates up to 60 fps; CBR; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Bitrate depends on the codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current YouTube settings table for your chosen format rather than treating a single number as universal. For H.264, YouTube’s table lists 14 Mbps at 1080p30 and 17 Mbps at 1080p60 as recommended bitrates. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of the bitrate a particular network or encoder will sustain. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Retrieve the RTMPS URL and stream key from Live Control Room, enter them in the encoder, and treat the key like a password. YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
Test loop boundaries and protect the broadcast
A loop control means the media repeats; it does not establish that the transition will be gap-free. The documented controls and pipeline elements do not guarantee frame or audio continuity at the boundary. Test the actual file, scene or pipeline, and audio before depending on the loop.

- Watch and listen across at least one full loop boundary for a pause, black frame, audio gap, or abrupt restart.
- Use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators during a test broadcast.
- Leave upload bandwidth headroom: YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% beyond the stream’s bitrate. YouTube streaming tips.
- Check that you have the rights to stream the video and its audio. Using an encoder or a looping feature does not grant rebroadcast rights; YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules still apply.
YouTube’s encoder onboarding guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. This is not a promise that every stream will be archived under every circumstance; check the current guidance when planning a broadcast that needs an archive. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS plays the video once and stops | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source, or the source properties were not applied. | Open the source properties and enable Loop; test the end-of-file transition in preview. |
| OBS playlist does not load | VLC Video source requires VLC, or the playlist/source selection is incorrect. | Install VLC, confirm OBS recognizes it, and reselect the playlist. |
| GStreamer cannot find a sink or plugin | The installed package may not include the needed plugin. | Inspect the installed plugins and build; do not assume rtmpsink is present. |
| RTMPS connection fails | The sink or linked librtmp build may not support the chosen endpoint, or the destination/key is incorrect. | Verify endpoint support for the exact installed build and copy the current URL/key from Live Control Room. |
| YouTube reports poor stream health | Bitrate, keyframe interval, codec, timestamps, or available upload capacity may not match the stream. | Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s current table, use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and check upload headroom. |
| Audio or video breaks at the loop point | The looping method may restart playback with a gap or discontinuity. | Test the file boundary in the actual scene or pipeline and revise the playback/timestamp handling; looping alone is not a continuity guarantee. |
Or let it run in the cloud
