XSplit’s Stage preview can show an FPS dip even when the livestream or recording is smooth, so compare the preview with the actual output and XSplit’s status bar before changing settings. If the output is affected, check encoder load, reduce competing work, and test XSplit’s processing and encoding options one at a time.
Is the stream dropping frames, or only the Stage preview?
A low FPS reading in the Stage preview does not, by itself, prove viewers are seeing a problem. XSplit says it prioritizes livestream and recording processes over the preview. Check the status bar, then inspect the live output or a local recording. XSplit’s guidance says a preview dip is not a concern when CPU/GPU use is low and the resulting output is smooth. If the live output or recording also stutters, note the conditions before troubleshooting: CPU and GPU use, XSplit version, output resolution and frame rate, selected codec, scene and source complexity, and whether the issue occurs in the preview, recording, live stream, or all three. Those details help distinguish an encoding bottleneck from a network problem.
Check XSplit’s encoder and system load
Open YouTube’s live dashboard and look for encoder errors; compare those with CPU load on the computer running XSplit. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says: “You can look for encoder errors on the live dashboard and check the CPU load on your encoder.” If the encoder output looks and sounds healthy but viewers still see interruptions, investigate the outbound internet connection separately.

A stream running for a long time does not establish a memory leak, overheating, or a defective CPU. The cause depends on the system and stream configuration; there is no universal CPU-use threshold or single setting guaranteed to fix it.
How to lower CPU usage in XSplit Broadcaster
Make one change at a time, then check the actual stream or a recording—not just the Stage preview. That makes it easier to see whether the change helped or shifted the load elsewhere.

- Close unnecessary programs. Exit apps and background processes you do not need during the stream to free system resources.
- Change the processing preference if one processor is overloaded. In XSplit, open Tools > Settings > Advanced. XSplit documents Prefer GPU and Prefer CPU; its guidance recommends trying Prefer GPU when CPU use is high, or Prefer CPU when GPU use is high. The default balances CPU and GPU processing, while Prefer GPU uses GPU functions for accelerated video decoding and other processing. Check whether the change reduces the bottleneck without overloading the other processor. See XSplit’s Settings documentation.
- Review video encoding settings. Open Broadcast, select the gear beside the relevant output, and review Video Encoding Settings. Try another available video codec if your system offers one. Options vary with the system and software version.
- Reduce the workload if needed. Try lowering the Stage resolution or frame rate, then check the output’s smoothness and quality. These changes can reduce processing demand, but they also reduce the stream’s resolution or motion detail. Choose settings that your computer can sustain reliably.
Separate encoder trouble from upload trouble
If the encoder reports errors or the output is already stuttering locally, continue diagnosing XSplit and system load. If the encoder looks healthy but the YouTube stream is unstable, test the upload path before assuming CPU is responsible.
- Check available upload capacity. In the output’s encoding settings, XSplit documents a Test Bandwidth button. Use it to assess the connection and set the bitrate in line with the calculated average data rate.
- Leave upload headroom. YouTube’s undated Streaming tips recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused. Treat that as a platform recommendation, not a guarantee: other network traffic and connection variation can still affect a stream.
- Choose a bitrate for the selected output. YouTube’s undated live encoder settings page recommends 6 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/60 fps and 5 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps. These are recommendations for those specific output settings, not universal targets. Match the bitrate to your resolution, frame rate, codec, and available upload capacity.

When a hardware encoder or GPU upgrade might help
Consider hardware only after the checks above indicate encoding on the CPU is the bottleneck. YouTube notes that Nvidia GPUs include NVENC hardware encoding, which can encode video without using the CPU. A compatible hardware encoder may therefore be relevant, but that does not mean any particular card will work with your PC or XSplit setup.
Before buying, confirm that the GPU and its hardware encoder are supported by your installed XSplit version, that the encoder appears among your available options, and that your drivers, power supply, and case clearance are suitable. A hardware encoder shifts work to the GPU; it does not fix an overloaded upload connection or guarantee a stable stream.
