“Could not write header” is a generic FFmpeg output-initialization error, not a diagnosis. Find the first specific muxer, codec, stream, or network error above it; that earlier message is usually the useful clue. Without your command and full log, there is no reliable way to name the cause or prescribe a confirmed fix.

What the error means

FFmpeg writes an output header when it initializes the destination format and its streams. If that initialization fails, it may finish with a message such as “Could not write header for output file #0 (incorrect codec parameters ?).” The final line does not tell you which parameter is wrong, and by itself it does not show that YouTube is down.

A 2019 FFmpeg-user report illustrates the pattern: an FLV incompatibility with an output codec appeared before the generic header failure. That example is not proof that your command has the same problem. Read the archived FFmpeg-user example.

Diagnose the failure in order

  1. Capture the complete log. Keep the command and all FFmpeg output from startup through the failure, not only the last line. Locate the first specific error above “Could not write header” and note whether it names a muxer, codec, stream, or connection.
  2. Inspect the output streams and mapping. Check which input video and audio streams are sent to the output and which codecs they use. Do not assume every input stream can be copied into the selected container or muxer. Compare the actual stream types and codecs with the selected output format. FFmpeg’s format documentation describes its muxers and includes an RTMP example that explicitly maps video and audio and writes FLV. That example is illustrative; it is not a universal command to paste in.
  3. Check YouTube’s current ingest settings. Match the video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio codec, and keyframe interval to the official guidance for your stream. These settings help validate the output configuration; a mismatch with a recommendation does not, by itself, establish the cause of a header error.
  4. Verify the destination details. In YouTube Live Control Room, check the ingest URL and stream key, then review the live dashboard’s stream health and error feedback. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP; confirm that your FFmpeg build and command support it before using the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room.
  5. If it remains unclear, share enough information to reproduce the diagnosis. Include the complete command with the stream key replaced by [REDACTED], the full unabridged log, FFmpeg version and configuration, input stream metadata, and whether the output goes directly to RTMP/RTMPS or through tee, FIFO, or another intermediate.

Check YouTube’s settings against your output

YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. The exact bitrate guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the corresponding row in YouTube’s live table rather than applying a single bitrate to every stream.

1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s published H.264 ingest guidance, accessed October 2026; they are not a diagnosis or guaranteed fix for a header failure. Other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations have different recommendations. YouTube’s guidance also specifies 44.1 kHz, 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 48 kHz, 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio; it says AAC is supported for 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS.

For the transport choice, YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the protocol supported by your encoder and the URL provided for the stream. For destination-specific problems, consult YouTube’s pages on live streaming errors and stream settings.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video live on YouTube around the clock rather than troubleshoot a local FFmpeg setup, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
