For a graphical, documented way to stream a prerecorded YouTube playlist, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source with VLC installed. It can play a list of media files and loop or shuffle them. OBS’s Media Source is another option when you need to repeat one local file. GStreamer can be used to build a custom streaming pipeline, but the available documentation here does not provide a current, complete recipe for unattended playlist streaming.
For an automated stream, separate the job into three parts: choosing and looping media, sending the encoded stream to YouTube, and recovering when a process, computer, network, or YouTube connection fails. OBS documents useful controls for playback and automatic reconnect, but those controls are not an uptime guarantee.
Which GStreamer alternative should you use?
Choose based on how much control you need and where you want the stream to run:

Set up a prerecorded playlist in OBS
This route keeps playback and streaming software on a computer you operate. The computer, OBS, media files, and network connection all need to remain available for the stream to continue.
1. Prepare the YouTube broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube provides the Live server URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Enable live streaming on the channel if it has not been enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours; this is an activation delay, not a stream-duration limit.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
2. Add the playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS, as recommended by OBS’s media-source documentation.
- In OBS, select or create a scene, then use Sources → + → VLC Video Source.
- Add the local media files to the source’s playlist. Set the playlist behavior to Loop to repeat it; use Shuffle if you want randomized playback rather than a fixed sequence.
- Check that each file plays and that the transition from the last item back to the first behaves as intended. Keep the source files accessible at the paths OBS will use while it is running.
If the stream needs to repeat just one supported local audio or video file, use Sources → + → Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop. OBS documents supported media formats and the loop control in its Media Sources guide.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube and configure output
- Open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service or configure a custom service, and enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube.
- Open Settings → Output and configure the encoder and bitrate for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. There is no single bitrate that fits every source, connection, and output format; use the current YouTube guidance for your chosen stream settings and check that your sustained upload capacity can support them.
- Set a keyframe interval appropriate to YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your selected format. The OBS overview documents output and bitrate controls, but the cited sources do not establish one universal bitrate or keyframe value for every stream.
- Use OBS’s preview and, if possible, a private or unlisted test broadcast to confirm that video, audio, playlist order, and YouTube ingest are working before relying on the setup.
4. Enable reconnect and plan for failures
OBS documents an Automatically Reconnect option under its advanced settings. Configure it and review the reconnect delay and retry controls available in your installed OBS version. Reconnect can help when the connection to YouTube drops, but it does not supervise every failure: a host crash, power loss, missing media, full disk, or broken network may still stop the stream or prevent recovery. OBS’s overview guide describes the reconnect option; it does not promise continuous service.
- Prevent the computer from sleeping, and use reliable power and network connectivity.
- Keep media files on storage that remains mounted and readable; check available disk space and system resources.
- Arrange a way to notice a stopped broadcast and intervene. Automatic reconnect is not the same as monitoring or failover.
- Test recovery deliberately before depending on the stream. Check both OBS’s status and YouTube’s live dashboard after a disconnect.
What GStreamer is—and what the evidence establishes
GStreamer is a framework for constructing media pipelines, so it can suit a custom workflow where the operator is prepared to assemble and maintain playback, encoding, and RTMP transmission. A 2017 GStreamer conference presentation describes an alternative RTMP implementation and lists YouTube Live as a destination. That establishes historical YouTube destination capability, but it is not a current end-to-end guide for an unattended playlist broadcast.

That distinction matters: a working media pipeline is only one part of a dependable 24/7 stream. You still need to select and repeat files, configure YouTube’s current ingest URL and stream key, keep the host and network running, and decide how to detect and recover from failures. The cited material does not establish a turnkey GStreamer playlist configuration, a current reliability comparison with OBS, or guaranteed uptime.

A playlist that technically streams is not automatically permitted to use every included recording or eligible for monetization. Before broadcasting, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for the video, music, artwork, and any other protected material. A live broadcast can be interrupted or restricted if it violates copyright or YouTube policies. Repeatedly streaming prerecorded material does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements; check the platform’s current policies and the rights for each item.
