Use three separate layers: yt-dlp or your own code to enumerate playlist entries, GStreamer to play each media URI, and Docker to restart the application if its process exits. Docker does not restart a failed GStreamer pipeline that remains inside a running process; your application must handle playback errors and decide whether to retry, skip, or exit.
How the pieces fit together
A playlist stream is not a single Docker or GStreamer setting. It is a small playback service with three responsibilities:
- Playlist layer: obtain playlist entries and choose their playback order. yt-dlp supports playlist extraction, but entry traversal and sequencing still need orchestration.
- Playback layer: give GStreamer
playbina resolvable absolute media URI. It handles playback and exposes events such as errors and end-of-stream through the GStreamer bus. - Recovery layer: have the application respond to playback events; use Docker’s restart policy for recovery after the application process exits.
These boundaries matter: a media error is not necessarily a process exit, and Docker’s restart policy acts only after the container exits. See the GStreamer playbin documentation, yt-dlp README, and Docker’s restart-policy documentation.
Choose a prototype or an application
Use gst-launch-1.0 to explore
gst-launch-1.0 is useful for trying a pipeline, but GStreamer describes it primarily as a debugging tool and says, “You should not build applications on top of it.” For a durable playlist service, use a small application built with the GStreamer API, rather than treating a launch command as the playlist manager.

A launch tool can play a URI, but playlist iteration, transitions, error decisions, and ongoing observability belong in orchestration code. The GStreamer gst-launch-1.0 reference recommends using an application with gst_parse_launch() for application use.
Build explicit playlist orchestration
yt-dlp documents full playlist extraction as the default behavior. Its --flat-playlist option avoids extracting entry details and may mean downloading is bypassed. Its FAQ also documents sending one selected media item to standard output with -o - and demonstrates piping that output to VLC. That establishes a general player-pipe pattern, not a documented or tested GStreamer playlist command.
Design your wrapper to obtain entries, resolve a playable URI for the current entry, set that URI on playbin, and observe bus messages. On end-of-stream, advance to the next entry. On an error, define the policy deliberately: retry the same entry, skip it, or terminate the process so Docker can restart it. Log the entry and event so an operator can distinguish a bad item from a broader outage.

Do not assume that yt-dlp playlist | gst-launch-1.0 playbin handles playlist sequencing. The documented stdout example concerns one selected video, while a playlist requires traversal and control flow. Extraction compatibility and available formats can change; consult the current yt-dlp README for version, update, and format-selection options.

Docker’s documentation states: “A restart policy controls whether the Docker daemon restarts a container after exit.” Choose a policy based on exit status and whether a deliberate manual stop should persist:

Use unless-stopped when a deliberate operator stop should remain in effect after a daemon restart. Use always when the container should be brought back after exit even if it was previously stopped manually, subject to Docker’s documented handling. Choose on-failure when automatic restart should depend on a non-zero exit. These policies do not fix an error in a live application process.

docker run -d --restart unless-stopped --name playlist your-imageUse --restart on-failure:5 instead if you want a non-zero exit to trigger a limited number of retries. The retry count and policy should match your operational intent.
Handle playback failures inside the application
Have the wrapper watch GStreamer bus messages for errors and end-of-stream, as well as state changes useful for monitoring. When playback ends normally, advance the playlist. When playback fails, apply the retry, skip, or exit rule you selected. If the wrapper catches an error but stays alive without repairing or replacing the pipeline, Docker sees a running process and does nothing.
- Retry: useful for transient failures, but avoid an unbounded rapid retry loop; record attempts and use a deliberate delay or limit.
- Skip: keeps later playlist items moving when a particular entry cannot play, but can omit content.
- Exit: lets Docker’s configured policy restart the application after a fatal condition, but it restarts the process rather than guaranteeing the same media item will resume. Persist playlist position if resuming matters.
These are design choices for your wrapper, not built-in Docker handling of individual GStreamer events. The playbin documentation describes URI playback, network buffering, and event reporting; application code must turn those events into playlist and recovery behavior.

Deployment, rights, and operational checks
- No particular physical product is required by this workflow. The host depends on where you deploy Docker and on the resources your workload needs.
- Confirm that the media URI resolves and that the selected format is supported by the GStreamer installation in the container.
- Test both a normal end-of-stream transition and an error while the wrapper is alive. Separately test what happens when the process exits under the selected Docker policy.
- Keep logs for playlist selection, URI resolution, GStreamer bus errors, retries, skips, and process exits. Without those distinctions, a restart loop and a stuck pipeline can look alike from outside.
- Respect copyright and the source service’s applicable terms when accessing or redistributing media. Technical extraction behavior does not grant permission to stream content.
Troubleshoot common failure modes
Container exits and does not return
Check the container’s configured restart policy and process exit status. The default is no; on-failure requires a non-zero exit. If you expect a policy to survive a daemon restart, verify that you selected one with the required behavior.
Playback errors, but Docker does not restart
The wrapper may still be running even though its GStreamer pipeline failed. Handle the bus error in application code: retry, skip, rebuild the pipeline, or exit with a non-zero status if Docker should take over.
The playlist stops after one item
playbin plays a URI; it is not a managed playlist service. Ensure the wrapper enumerates entries, observes end-of-stream, and assigns the next URI. A pipe example for one selected yt-dlp item is not sufficient evidence of playlist traversal.
An entry cannot be resolved or played
Check yt-dlp’s current version and format-selection behavior, then verify that the resolved URI is absolute and accessible from inside the container. Extraction compatibility and available formats can change; consult the current project README and log which entry failed.
