Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can host an FFmpeg workflow as a Windows service, but a YouTube playlist page is not itself a reliable FFmpeg media input. Use yt-dlp to select and extract playlist media, FFmpeg for media processing, and a service wrapper such as WinSW or NSSM to launch the configured command unattended. First prove the extraction and handoff work in an interactive terminal; then configure and test the service under its actual Windows account.
Understand the three jobs
- yt-dlp: selects items from a YouTube playlist and extracts media URLs or downloads media. Its README documents playlist selection and output templates, but that does not make a playlist webpage URL a stable direct input for FFmpeg. yt-dlp README
- FFmpeg: processes media supplied as inputs with
-i, including supported network streams. A playlist page and a direct media stream are different kinds of input. FFmpeg command-line documentation - Windows service wrapper: registers an ordinary executable and its arguments as a service, then manages its start and stop lifecycle. WinSW and NSSM are two options; neither extracts YouTube media for you.
This separation matters: a wrapper can keep a process running as a service, but it cannot make an invalid or expired media URL work, nor does wrapper documentation establish uninterrupted playlist playback.
Validate the playlist workflow before installing a service
- Install FFmpeg and yt-dlp and note their full executable paths. Use current versions appropriate to your system, then verify both executables work from a terminal.
- Choose the intended media handoff. yt-dlp can select playlist entries and use output templates; it can also send output to another process through stdout when that process reads stdin. Its FAQ pipe example describes a player that consumes stdin, not a verified end-to-end FFmpeg playlist service recipe. Choose a handoff that matches whether you intend to process a stream, download files, or process files one by one. yt-dlp FAQ
- Test the exact commands interactively. Confirm the selected playlist entries resolve and the downstream operation succeeds. YouTube extraction and access can change, so a command working once does not guarantee future availability.
- Make FFmpeg suitable for noninteractive execution. Add
-nostdinto its invocation so it does not check for console input. The FFmpeg FAQ recommends this for background operation; on Windows, redirecting stdin toNULis an alternative.-nostdindoes not install or supervise a service. FFmpeg FAQ
There is no single service command that can be guaranteed for every playlist and handoff. Treat the following wrapper configurations as illustrative: substitute the paths and arguments from your working local test, and validate them on your machine.
Choose a service wrapper
| Wrapper | Configuration model | Useful considerations |
|---|---|---|
| WinSW | XML file defines the executable and arguments; the wrapper executable provides service lifecycle commands. | Supports explicit working-directory and service-account configuration. The v3 documentation describes LocalSystem as the default service account and the configuration directory as the default working directory. |
| NSSM | Configure an application path, arguments and startup directory, using its command line or GUI. | The application path is mandatory. NSSM documents graceful shutdown attempts for the monitored application and subprocesses when the service is stopped. |

#1 Best Overall
- Edit your videos and pictures to perfection with a host of helpful editing tools.
- Create amazing videos with fun effects and interesting transitions.
- Record or add audio clips to your video, or simply pull stock sounds from the NCH Sound Library.
- Enhance your audio tracks with impressive audio effects, like Pan, Reverb or Echo.
- Share directly online to Facebook, YouTube, and other platforms or burn directly to disc.
Install with WinSW
- Place and name the wrapper. Follow the WinSW v3 installation layout and use the wrapper executable name and matching XML configuration file expected by that release.
- Write the XML configuration. Set the executable path, arguments, working directory, and service account explicitly. Point the executable at the actual command you validated. If yt-dlp launches FFmpeg as a child process, configure and test that process relationship rather than assuming the wrapper will interpret a shell command automatically. Consult the XML configuration reference for the supported elements and syntax.
- Open an elevated terminal in the wrapper’s configuration directory and use the documented WinSW CLI to install the service, then start it. The v3 CLI documentation lists lifecycle commands, including install, start, stop, restart and status: WinSW CLI commands.
- Check status and logs. Confirm the service starts and that its process can access the executables, media paths and network resources it needs.
Install with NSSM
- Run NSSM’s service installation workflow and provide the full path to the application executable. NSSM requires an application path.
- Set the arguments and startup directory to match the command and working directory from your interactive test. Quote paths containing spaces correctly, and prefer absolute paths for executables and files.
- Install and start the service using NSSM’s documented command-line or GUI workflow. Confirm it launches the intended process rather than only the wrapper.
- Test stopping the service. NSSM says it attempts graceful shutdown of the monitored application and subprocesses when it receives a service stop. Verify the behavior with your actual process chain. Details: NSSM usage.
Run under the right account and directory
A service may run with a different account and environment from your signed-in terminal. That can change access to files, credentials, mapped drives and network resources. WinSW documents LocalSystem and the configuration directory as defaults, so do not assume the service inherits your interactive user’s permissions or current directory. Set the account and working directory deliberately, and ensure that account can reach every required resource. WinSW XML configuration
- Use absolute paths for FFmpeg, yt-dlp, configuration files and local media.
- Prefer local paths available to the service account over user-specific mapped drive letters.
- Reproduce failures under the same account and working directory used by the service.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports that it cannot open the input. | A playlist webpage URL was supplied where a direct media input was expected, or the extracted URL is no longer usable. | Run the yt-dlp selection/extraction step interactively and verify the exact handoff and resulting input. FFmpeg accepts inputs with -i, but not every webpage URL is a media stream. FFmpeg documentation |
| The service starts and exits immediately. | Arguments, quoting, executable path or working directory differ from the successful interactive command. | Use absolute paths; check the wrapper configuration and logs, then run the exact command with the service account and working directory. |
| The process waits for input or behaves differently without a console. | FFmpeg is performing console input checks in background mode. | Add -nostdin to FFmpeg or redirect stdin to NUL on Windows. This addresses console input checks, not service installation. FFmpeg FAQ |
| Files or network resources work in a terminal but not in the service. | The service account lacks access, or depends on user-specific environment or mapped paths. | Check the configured service account, permissions and working directory; test under that same identity. |
| Playback fails later after an initially successful test. | YouTube extraction, playlist access or a media URL may have changed or expired. | Re-run the extraction step, inspect wrapper logs and Windows Event Log where available, and validate the current command before restarting. Service-wrapper documentation does not promise uninterrupted playback. yt-dlp FAQ |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep pre-recorded videos live on a YouTube channel, rather than maintain a Windows service, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
