A separate project, og-screenshots, is a local CLI specifically for generating Open Graph images. This guide shows both options so you can choose hosted capture or local generation.
Choose the right command-line tool

Use ScreenshotMachine if you want to send a request to a hosted screenshot service. Use og-screenshots if you want a local tool that can discover multiple pages from a sitemap or feed. The repository sources do not establish the local project’s current maintenance status.
Generate an image with ScreenshotMachine from Bash
ScreenshotMachine’s API endpoint is https://api.screenshotmachine.com. The documented request is an HTTP GET. You need a customer key and a page URL; dimensions, output format, device, cache age, delay, and zoom are configurable options.
1. Set the request values
Sign in to ScreenshotMachine and obtain your customer key. Replace the example values below; do not publish a real key or secret phrase in a public repository or client-side page.

zoom="100"The endpoint documentation requires url; other parameters shown here are choices for the image or capture behavior. The official Bash example uses a secret phrase and hash. When a secret phrase is set, requests without the correct hash are ignored. The hash is the MD5 of the URL parameter value followed by the secret phrase. For direct requests from public HTML, ScreenshotMachine recommends using the hash rather than exposing an unprotected request.
2. Build and send the GET request
This runnable Bash example uses openssl to calculate the documented MD5 value and curl’s --data-urlencode to encode the URL safely. It saves the returned image as output.png.

-o output.pngThe parameter names and signing approach follow ScreenshotMachine’s API guide. If your account’s configuration or current API documentation specifies a different credential setup, follow that account-specific guidance rather than placing a secret in a public script. The Python repository also demonstrates constructing an API URL and retrieving the image to output.png: screenshotmachine-python.
3. Choose dimensions and capture behavior
- Open Graph dimensions: Set
dimensionto1200x630for a 1200-by-630 output image. ScreenshotMachine documents width values from 100 through 1920 pixels and height from 100 through 9999 pixels;fullis accepted for full-page capture. - Format: The API documentation lists JPG, PNG, and GIF. Ensure the extension in
-omatches the requested format. - Device: The documented values are
desktop,phone, ortablet. The selected device changes the capture context, so use the one that reflects the page presentation you need. - Delay: Increase the delay for long pages or pages with images or animations that need time to appear. A short wait may capture a partially rendered page.
- Cache age:
cacheLimitaccepts 0 through 14 days. Set it to0to avoid using a cached image; allow a longer cache when the page is stable and reuse is acceptable. - Zoom: The documented Bash example includes a zoom parameter. Check the API guide for the accepted setting and use it only when you need to alter the page scale.
Generate images locally with the separate og-screenshots CLI
If your intent is a local Open Graph generator rather than ScreenshotMachine’s hosted API, the project is named og-screenshots. Its README documents Node.js 16+, Chrome, and ImageMagick’s convert command as requirements.

Install and run it
Install globally:

npx og-screenshots --url "https://example.com"The required --url can be a single page URL, a sitemap, or an RSS feed. The tool can process multiple detected URLs when given a sitemap or feed. By default, it writes into ./public/screenshots, uses WebP, recommends a 1200×630 image size, runs with concurrency 3, uses quality 100, and allows 60000 milliseconds before timeout. It skips existing images unless you pass --overwrite.
Adjust output and runtime options
Use the project’s documented flags to control how many pages are handled, how the browser window is sized, or where dependencies are located:

For exact flag syntax and defaults, check the current project README; the README also describes the tool as beta and says its testing was limited to macOS. Cross-platform behavior is therefore not established by that documentation.

ScreenshotMachine returns an error or no usable image
- Check credentials and signing: Confirm the customer key is correct. If a secret phrase is configured, calculate the hash from the exact URL parameter value followed by that phrase; requests with a missing or incorrect hash are ignored.
- Check URL encoding: Use
--data-urlencodefor the page URL, especially if it contains query parameters or special characters. - Check dimensions and format: Stay within the documented width and height limits, use a supported format, and match the output filename extension to that format.
- Page is incomplete: Increase the delay for pages with late-loading images or animations. A full-page capture may need more time than a short page.
- Unexpected old image: Set
cacheLimit=0when you want to bypass cached imagery.
og-screenshots fails to start or appears stuck
- Missing runtime or tools: Verify Node.js is version 16 or later and that Chrome and ImageMagick’s
convertcommand are installed. If automatic detection fails, supply--chrome-pathor--imagemagick-path. - Existing output is unchanged: The CLI skips existing images by default; add
--overwriteto regenerate them. - Long or unresponsive capture: The README notes occasional hangs. Try a smaller sitemap/feed batch, lower the number of captures with
--max-screenshots, or adjust the timeout in line with the project’s documented options. - Non-macOS environment: The README only reports macOS testing, so failures on another platform cannot be resolved by assuming cross-platform support; confirm dependencies and consult the project’s current issue tracker or documentation.

Which workflow should you use?
Choose ScreenshotMachine when you want a hosted API request and can supply its account credentials. Choose og-screenshots when you want a local CLI that accepts a URL, sitemap, or RSS feed and have its runtime dependencies available. The names are not interchangeable: the first is ScreenshotMachine’s documented curl-based API use, while the second is a distinct local project.
