Not necessarily. Chrome is built on the Chromium open-source browser project, and both support the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) screenshot command. That shared foundation does not guarantee pixel-identical screenshots: browser build, operating system, page state, viewport, device scale factor, capture mode, and screenshot options can all affect a comparison. The official sources cited here do not report a controlled, version-matched Chrome-versus-Chromium pixel test.

Why Chrome and Chromium may produce the same screenshot

Chrome is Google’s browser built on Chromium, with additional features and services such as proprietary media codecs, optional error reporting, Google Account features, automatic updates, and additional release-channel testing. Those differences establish that Chrome and Chromium are not identical products; they do not establish that ordinary webpage screenshots must differ. Chrome for Developers explains the relationship.

Both browsers are within the browser family that the Chrome DevTools Protocol can instrument. CDP defines a shared Page.captureScreenshot command, so automation can use the same general screenshot interface with Chromium and Chrome. A common command is useful for a fair comparison, but it is not proof that every build renders every page identically. See the Chrome DevTools Protocol project and its protocol reference.

What can change the result?

When two screenshots differ, first establish that the comparison holds the capture setup and page conditions constant. These factors are relevant inputs, not proof that each one will change every screenshot.

Comparison input What to keep consistent
Browser build Record the exact product, version, and Chromium distribution. A Chromium package may include distribution-specific modifications or settings; the project’s comparison page describes Linux specifically, so its details should not be generalized to all platforms or builds. Chromium’s Linux comparison page.
Operating system and rendering environment Use the same OS and, where possible, the same fonts and color environment. Chromium’s browser tests cover multiple platforms and note platform-specific caveats. Chromium Page handler browser tests.
Page state Use the same URL, content, login state, cookies, animations, timing, and scroll position. A page that changes between captures cannot isolate browser differences.
Viewport and device scale factor Set identical viewport dimensions and device scale factor; otherwise image dimensions and rendered detail may differ.
Headless or headed mode Use the same mode for both runs and record it. Do not treat captures made with different modes as a browser-only comparison.
Capture source and full-page behavior CDP’s fromSurface defaults to true, while captureBeyondViewport defaults to false. Chromium’s implementation takes a full-page-size capture path when capture is from the surface, beyond-viewport capture is enabled, and no clip is specified. Chromium Page handler implementation.
Clip and output format Use the same clip and format. The protocol supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP; PNG is the default, and JPEG accepts a quality parameter. Comparing different encodings or clipped areas is not a clean browser comparison. CDP captureScreenshot reference.

How to compare the screenshots fairly

  1. Choose a stable page. Use a page and state you can reproduce in both browsers; avoid content that changes during capture.
  2. Record both environments. Note the exact browser product and version, Chromium distribution if applicable, operating system, headless or headed mode, viewport dimensions, and device scale factor.
  3. Match capture settings. Use the same CDP screenshot command, format, clip, fromSurface value, and captureBeyondViewport value. For a full-page capture through the surface path, enable beyond-viewport capture and omit the clip.
  4. Capture and compare decoded images. Compare equal-sized decoded images or use a pixel-diff tool. If dimensions, scaling, clipping, or encoding differ, fix those inputs before interpreting a diff as a browser-rendering difference.
  5. Repeat when needed. Re-run the capture after confirming the page state and environment. Chromium’s tests exercise scale-factor overrides, clipping, transparency, and beyond-viewport capture, with some platform-specific caveats; they do not establish a universal source for any particular mismatch. See the implementation tests.

How to interpret a mismatch

Check the straightforward causes first: image dimensions, device scale factor, headless or headed mode, capture source, clip, full-page setting, and format. Then verify that the browser builds and the page state match. If those are controlled and the images still differ, the comparison establishes a difference for those particular builds and conditions—not that Chrome and Chromium always produce different screenshots.

For diagnosis tied to installed binaries, consult protocol and implementation sources that match their versions. The cited implementation links point to moving Chromium sources, so their current contents may not describe an older build.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return an image or PDF; its cleanup steps can accept consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does using the same CDP screenshot command guarantee identical output?

No. It provides a shared capture interface, but does not guarantee pixel identity across browser builds, platforms, or capture environments.

Is there an official controlled Chrome-versus-Chromium pixel comparison?

The official Chrome and Chromium sources cited here do not report a controlled, version-matched pixel comparison.
