Use Chromium’s headless mode and its --screenshot flag to save a rendered webpage as an image. Choose a viewport that matches the layout you want to represent, then capture the page at that size. For a website thumbnail, a deliberate viewport capture is usually more useful than shrinking an entire long page into one image.
The workflow is the same for readers in India as elsewhere; the available documentation does not establish a special India-specific installation command, thumbnail standard, or regulatory requirement.
Choose the image you actually need
Before running Chromium, decide what the thumbnail should communicate. Its dimensions control the browser viewport and therefore the responsive layout shown in the image; they are not merely a crop applied afterward.
- Representative preview: Capture a selected viewport showing the page’s key content. This is generally suitable for a compact website thumbnail.
- Full-page record: Capture beyond the viewport when the complete document matters. A very tall full-page image may be difficult to read when displayed as a small thumbnail.
- Separate device contexts: If you need to represent both mobile and desktop layouts, capture each viewport separately. Distinct form factors can call for distinct screenshots.
There is no universally correct thumbnail size established by the cited documentation. Use the dimensions of the destination or design brief where available. Chrome’s documented examples include 1280×1696 and 412×732; these are examples, not prescribed thumbnail dimensions.

Capture a website thumbnail from the command line
1. Make Chrome or Chromium available
Run the command in an environment where a Chrome or Chromium browser executable is installed. The executable may be named differently on different systems; replace chrome below with the command available in your environment. The documentation does not establish one installation method that applies to every operating system or environment in India.
2. Capture the page at an intentional viewport
For a basic screenshot, run:
chrome --headless --screenshot https://example.com/
Chrome writes screenshot.png in the current working directory in the documented example. Set a viewport when you want to control the layout being rendered:

chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,1696 https://example.com/
For a narrow, mobile-like layout, Chrome’s documentation also shows this example:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=412,732 https://example.com/
Replace https://example.com/ with the page you want to capture. These commands save a viewport screenshot; they do not establish a universal image aspect ratio or guarantee that the page’s content will fit legibly at thumbnail size.

3. Inspect the result and capture other layouts if needed
Open the saved PNG and check that the page has loaded into the desired state, that the important content is visible, and that the layout suits the thumbnail’s intended use. If the site changes substantially between narrow and wide layouts, run a separate capture for each chosen viewport.
Viewport capture versus full-page capture
A viewport screenshot shows the browser’s selected visible area. A full-page screenshot attempts to include content beyond that area. They serve different purposes: a thumbnail normally represents a chosen view, while a full-page capture is more appropriate when the whole document is the deliverable.

The command examples above document the viewport workflow, not a full-page command. For programmatic capture, Puppeteer’s screenshot API documents the captureBeyondViewport option: its default is false without a clip and true with a clip. Consult the Puppeteer screenshot options documentation when implementing that API; do not assume the basic Chromium command shown above captures the complete page.
Common problems and fixes
- The command says Chrome was not found: The executable is unavailable under the name
chrome. Check which Chrome or Chromium command your environment provides and use that name in the command. - The screenshot shows the wrong responsive layout: Set
--window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHTto dimensions appropriate for the intended narrow or wide context, then capture again. - The image cuts off content farther down the page: The example command captures a viewport. Use a full-page capture method when the complete document is required.
- The thumbnail is difficult to read: Reconsider the viewport and the portion of the page the image needs to represent. A full-page image scaled down can make details too small; a selected viewport may communicate the page more clearly.
- The captured page is blank or incomplete: Inspect the saved image and check whether the page had finished rendering in the capture environment. The cited command documentation does not specify a general wait strategy for every site, so do not treat a screenshot file as proof that the intended page state loaded.
Automating repeated captures
The command-line workflow is suitable for a direct local capture. If you need unattended, recurring jobs, run Chromium in an environment that can execute the browser command and save or deliver the resulting image. Cloud compute or a VPS may be an optional deployment choice for such a workflow, but no particular provider is required by the screenshot instructions.

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. The API returns a screenshot or PDF for a URL; its clean-shot options accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets, with each step configurable. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Frequently Asked Questions
Are 1280×1696 and 412×732 required thumbnail sizes?
No. They are viewport examples in Chrome’s documentation, not a thumbnail standard.
Does the basic headless command capture an entire webpage?
The documented command is a viewport screenshot. Use a full-page capture method if content beyond the viewport must be included.
