Call page.render() inside the callback to page.open(), and render only when its status is 'success'. That callback runs when PhantomJS reports that the page’s load event has finished; it does not guarantee that every later application update is complete.

Take the screenshot after PhantomJS reports a successful page load

The basic pattern is to open the URL, check the callback status, render on success, and exit PhantomJS whether the navigation succeeded or failed:

var page = require('webpage').create();
var url = 'http://example.com';

page.open(url, function(status) {
  if (status === 'success') {
    page.render('example.png');
  } else {
    console.error('Unable to load the page: ' + status);
  }

  phantom.exit();
});

The page.open() callback is invoked through page.onLoadFinished and receives either 'success' or 'fail'. Rendering in that callback therefore avoids taking the screenshot immediately after starting navigation. See the PhantomJS WebPage open method and its Quick Start.

What “finished loading” means in PhantomJS

The callback marks completion of the browser’s page-load event. It is the right readiness point for a screenshot of the page at ordinary load completion, but it is not a promise that all asynchronous activity has settled. Timers, delayed API responses, client-side rendering, and other app-specific work can change the page afterward.

When the load callback is enough

Use the callback as shown when the content you need is present by the normal load event. Keep the status === 'success' check so a failed navigation is not mistaken for a usable page.

When the page changes after load

If the screenshot must include later content, identify a meaningful readiness condition for that page—such as a particular element appearing or an application state becoming ready—and wait for that condition before rendering. Include a timeout and a failure path. A fixed delay can be useful for a known, bounded transition, but it is less precise than waiting for the condition itself and may be either too short or unnecessarily long.

Choose a readiness signal

Approach Best for Trade-off
page.open() callback Content ready at the normal page-load event Simple and directly tied to load completion; does not cover arbitrary later work.
A page-specific condition Content rendered or fetched after the load event More precise, but requires knowing what “ready” means for the target page and adding timeout handling.
page.loading or page.loadingProgress Diagnostics while investigating navigation behavior These expose loading state and progress (100 means loaded); they do not define whether an application-specific update needed by the screenshot has finished.

PhantomJS documents the loading properties in its Page Automation guide. For a normal navigation, the callback remains the direct documented pattern.

Configure resource timeouts before opening the page

If a resource takes too long, the resourceTimeout setting specifies a timeout in milliseconds; when a resource exceeds it, PhantomJS stops trying and calls page.onResourceTimeout. Set page settings before page.open(), because the documented settings apply during the initial open call.

var page = require('webpage').create();

page.settings.resourceTimeout = 15000;
page.onResourceTimeout = function(request) {
  console.error('Resource timed out: ' + request.url);
};

page.open('http://example.com', function(status) {
  if (status === 'success') {
    page.render('example.png');
  } else {
    console.error('Unable to load the page: ' + status);
  }
  phantom.exit();
});

The example uses 15,000 milliseconds as an illustrative setting, not a universal recommended timeout. Check the PhantomJS WebPage settings reference for the setting’s behavior. Resource timeouts and the page-load callback address navigation resources; they do not substitute for waiting on a later application-specific condition.

Troubleshoot missing or incomplete screenshots

  • The screenshot is blank or the page is absent: Check and log the callback status. Render only for 'success'; handle 'fail' rather than treating it as a completed page.
  • Some content is missing although status is successful: The content may appear after the load event. Wait for a page-specific condition before calling page.render().
  • The process appears to hang after capturing or failing: Call phantom.exit() on both paths. PhantomJS does not terminate unless the script calls it.
  • A slow resource disrupts the initial load: Set page.settings.resourceTimeout before page.open() and use page.onResourceTimeout to log the timed-out resource.
  • The script waits indefinitely for late content: Give the page-specific wait a deadline and report failure if the condition is not met. Do not assume the ordinary load callback or a loading-progress value proves that later app work has completed.
