Do not copy a CSRF token once and reuse it as though it were permanent. Let the application obtain and submit the current token through its ordinary page behavior.
Why a rotating CSRF token changes the screenshot workflow
A CSRF token is not necessarily a fixed credential. OWASP explains that synchronizer tokens can be generated once per session or per request; the server checks that a submitted token is present and matches the user’s session. With per-request rotation, a token from an earlier page or request may be stale. OWASP also notes that stale pages can create usability problems when submitted.
A screenshot navigation may only read and render a page, so it does not necessarily submit a state-changing request or trigger CSRF validation. But page scripts and UI interactions may make requests as the page loads or while automation runs. The robust approach is therefore to let the site’s own code obtain and send the token it currently expects, rather than carrying a copied token forward. This is an application of the token lifecycle guidance, not a guarantee about every site’s implementation. OWASP Cross-Site Request Forgery Prevention Cheat Sheet
Capture an authenticated page with Playwright
For a one-off capture, log in in the browser automation run, confirm that login has completed, visit the protected URL, and take the screenshot. The example below uses a visible signed-in element as the login completion check; replace the selectors and URLs with those used by your application.

Fresh login for each capture
-
Install Playwright for Node.js using the official Playwright documentation for your environment.
-
Set the login URL, protected page URL, credentials, and a selector that appears only after successful login. Keep credentials in environment variables or a secrets manager rather than in source code.
-
Run this script:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
async function main() { const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true }); const context = await browser.newContext(); const page = await context.newPage(); try { await page.goto(process.env.LOGIN_URL, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' }); await page.locator('input[name="username"]').fill(process.env.APP_USERNAME); await page.locator('input[name="password"]').fill(process.env.APP_PASSWORD); await page.locator('button[type="submit"]').click(); await page.locator('[data-testid="signed-in-user"]').waitFor({ state: 'visible' }); await page.goto(process.env.PROTECTED_URL, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' }); await page.locator('main').waitFor({ state: 'visible' }); await page.screenshot({ path: 'authenticated-page.png', fullPage: true }); } finally { await browser.close(); }}main().catch((error) => { console.error(error); process.exitCode = 1; });
Replace input[name="username"], input[name="password"], button[type="submit"], [data-testid="signed-in-user"], and main with selectors appropriate to the application. If login ends at a reliable final URL rather than a signed-in element, wait for that URL instead. A visible signed-in marker or final URL is stronger evidence of completed authentication than a fixed sleep.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Reuse saved browser state for repeat captures
Playwright can save and load supported browser state, reducing the need to repeat login for every run. The state can include cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication. It does not include sessionStorage by default; if the application depends on sessionStorage, save and restore it separately using an application-appropriate approach.
After the normal login flow has completed, save the state:
await context.storageState({ path: 'playwright/.auth/state.json', indexedDB: true });
For a later capture, create the context with that state:

const context = await browser.newContext({ storageState: 'playwright/.auth/state.json' });
Then navigate to the protected page, verify the signed-in UI or redirect behavior, wait for the content you need, and capture it. Saved state can expire, be invalidated, or fail to represent sessionStorage-dependent authentication. Playwright also cautions that sharing authentication state can be unsuitable when tests change server-side data or depend on separate accounts. See Playwright authentication guidance.
Choose fresh login or saved state
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh login for every capture | Occasional captures, short-lived sessions, or workflows where using current authentication state matters most. | Repeats the login work on each run. |
| Saved browser state | Repeated captures where reusing a session is useful and the application’s state can be securely maintained. | State may expire; sessionStorage needs separate handling when required; the file is sensitive. |
Before standardizing either approach, check the session lifetime, whether the app uses sessionStorage, whether authentication is tied to a particular account or browser, whether the capture flow triggers state-changing requests, and whether your team can safely store any saved state.
Keep tokens and browser state out of URLs, logs, and source control
OWASP explicitly says, “A CSRF token must not be leaked in the server logs or in the URL.” Avoid putting tokens in query strings or printing them while debugging. Prefer the application’s ordinary form submission or custom-header behavior, and inspect requests only in an authorized environment without retaining sensitive values in shared logs. Authentication state files deserve similar care: Playwright warns that they may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could impersonate an account. Store them with restricted access, exclude the auth directory from version control, and avoid sharing them as ordinary test artifacts. Playwright authentication documentation

-
The capture lands on the login page: the login may not have completed, the session may have expired, or the saved state may not apply to this browser context. Wait for a signed-in indicator after login; for saved state, verify the page’s resulting URL and UI before taking the screenshot.
-
A request reports an invalid or missing CSRF token: do not assume a previously extracted token remains valid. Revisit the page through the normal application flow or log in again so the application can refresh its state. The exact refresh mechanism is site-specific.
-
The page is visible but important content is missing: wait for a stable element that represents the content, not just the initial document navigation. If the app loads data asynchronously, use its observable UI state as the readiness condition.

Saved state works in one run but not another: check for session expiry, account/browser binding, and sessionStorage dependence. Regenerate the state using a fresh normal login if necessary.
-
Login succeeds but an interaction fails: determine whether the interaction changes server-side state and therefore requires a current CSRF token. A screenshot-only task and a test that submits forms have different security and state requirements.
