To capture a Google search results page (SERP) in dark mode, change Google Search’s own appearance setting: open Settings → See all settings → Appearance, choose Dark theme, and save. Then capture the visible screen or, if you need results below the fold, use a full-page screenshot option. Chrome’s dark theme is a separate setting and does not, by itself, turn Google Search dark.
Turn on dark mode for Google Search
- Open Google and run the search you want to document.
- On the results page, open Settings → See all settings → Appearance. Depending on the layout, the Settings control may appear at the top left of the results page.
- Select Dark theme, then click Save.
- Return to the results and check that the page is visibly dark before taking the screenshot.
Google Search’s Appearance options also include Device default, which follows the device’s current color scheme, and Light theme, which restores dark text on a light background. Google says Search appearance applies to its homepage, results page, and Search settings. Google’s Search settings help explains the current desktop procedure.
Google Search dark theme is not Chrome dark theme
Google Search and Chrome have separate appearance controls. Chrome’s theme affects parts of the browser interface, including the toolbar and settings; Google Search’s Appearance setting controls the Search page itself. Changing Chrome’s theme alone does not confirm that the SERP is dark. See Google Chrome Help for the browser theme setting.
In Google Search’s 2021 desktop announcement, Search Product Support Manager Hung F. clarified that “Search pages include the Google homepage, search results page, and Search settings, among others.” Google Search Community announcement

Capture the visible SERP or the full page
Use a visible-area capture when the part you need fits on screen. If you need results below the fold, choose a full-page capture option. A full-page image records more of the page, but the screenshot is still evidence of one particular query and browsing context—not a universal or permanent record of what every user sees.
Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool
- On the Google results page, right-click an empty area and choose Take Screenshot. Alternatively, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save visible for the current viewport or Save full page to capture the page below the fold. You can also select a region.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
These capture modes and save options are documented by Mozilla Support. Mozilla notes a Wayland limitation involving movement of the selection crosshair; it matters if you use the selection interface.

Optional Chrome extension
A full-page capture extension is another option if you need an image or PDF. The GoFullPage Chrome Web Store listing describes full-page capture and image/PDF output, and its changelog includes a 2023-03-31 entry about capture improvements involving Google Search. That is the vendor’s listing, not an independent guarantee of how the extension handles every current SERP. It is optional; you do not need an extension just to enable Google Search’s dark theme. Keep enough context to interpret the screenshot
If you are saving the image as evidence or for later comparison, record the search query, date, locale, and browser context alongside it. Results can vary with query and context, so note what you captured rather than treating the file as a frozen, universally representative SERP.

If Google Search stays light or Appearance is missing
- Confirm the right setting: Open Google Search settings from a results page and check Appearance. Select Dark theme and save it.
- Check the page before capturing: Return to the results and verify the SERP itself looks dark. Do not rely on the browser toolbar’s appearance.
- Sign in if you want the preference carried across desktop browsers: Google says saved Search settings stay the same in browsers where that user signs in. This does not establish that the choice carries across every profile or unsigned session.
- Make sure you are looking at Google Search: Chrome’s dark setting changes the browser interface, not the Search appearance choice.
