To loop podcast episodes on YouTube Live in order, play the episode files through an encoder such as OBS, with Shuffle Playlist off and Loop Playlist on. Before going live, check the playlist for duplicate files: looping repeats the configured list, but OBS does not document a feature that detects duplicates or guarantees each episode appears only once.
Choose the right kind of playback
A YouTube podcast playlist and a YouTube Live broadcast are different things. A podcast is a playlist of episode videos; the playlist’s Loop control is for viewers watching in the YouTube player. It does not turn that playlist into an encoder-fed live broadcast. For a live stream, an encoder plays the episode files and sends its output to YouTube Live using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s player-loop instructions and its encoder setup instructions describe those separate functions.
YouTube recommends arranging full-length podcast episodes in their intended consumption order. If the goal is a continuous live broadcast, prepare that same order in the encoder rather than relying on the viewer-side playlist control. YouTube’s podcast setup guide explains the platform’s podcast playlist model.
Set up an ordered episode playlist in OBS
- Gather the episode videos. Put the files you want to broadcast in one place and decide their order. Check that each intended episode is present once; the playlist loop setting repeats entries as configured rather than checking for duplicate files.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and select the episode files in the intended order. OBS requires VLC Media Player to be installed for this source. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Set the playback behavior. Leave Shuffle Playlist off so OBS plays the configured order. Turn Loop Playlist on only if you want the complete playlist to restart after the last file. These are distinct controls: shuffle randomizes the sequence; loop restarts the list when it runs out.
- Check the scene and audio. Confirm the video source is visible in the OBS scene and that episode audio is reaching the stream mix. Play through transitions, including the end of one episode and the start of the next, before broadcasting.
- Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and choose the encoder stream setup. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as confidential: YouTube describes it as the encoder’s password and address.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the incoming signal and preview in Live Control Room. Check stream health and audio/video quality before going live; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring a broadcast.
- Go live and monitor playback. Start the event in Live Control Room and watch for playback problems, including a repeated episode caused by a duplicate playlist entry. When the event is over, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived, according to its encoder guide.

Prevent an episode from playing twice
The practical safeguard is a manual playlist audit. Looping means “start this configured list again when it ends”; it does not mean “play each unique episode once.” Before the event, compare the selected files against your intended episode order and look for an accidental second entry, including files with similar names. Then run a test long enough to confirm the sequence and the playlist’s restart behavior.
- Keep one clearly named file per episode in the selection list.
- Compare each playlist entry with your planned order, not just the total file count.
- Leave shuffle off if the order matters.
- Test the handoff between episodes and, if enabled, the restart after the final episode.
The documented OBS controls establish ordering, shuffling and whole-list looping; they do not establish an exactly-once guarantee or automatic duplicate detection. A test can expose configuration mistakes, but it does not replace checking the list itself.

What to use if you do not want OBS on a computer
YouTube’s encoder guide names AJA PlayToStream as an option for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. The cited guide does not establish that it detects duplicate episodes or guarantees each episode plays exactly once. Confirm that any alternative supports your desired playlist order and test its behavior before relying on it.
Troubleshooting
- An episode plays in the wrong order: check the VLC Video source’s file order and make sure Shuffle Playlist is off.
- The same episode plays twice before the list restarts: inspect the configured file entries for an accidental duplicate. Looping itself repeats the entire list only after it reaches the end.
- The playlist stops after the final episode: enable Loop Playlist if the complete sequence should start again. Leave it off if the broadcast should end after the last file.
- YouTube receives no encoder signal: confirm OBS is using the stream URL and stream key for the selected YouTube encoder stream, and that OBS has started streaming. Recheck the key if it was copied incorrectly or changed.
- The preview appears, but audio or video is missing or poor: inspect the OBS scene, source visibility and audio mix, then test again and monitor stream health in Live Control Room.
- The YouTube player’s Loop control does not affect the live sequence: that control is viewer-side playback; manage the sequence in the encoder playlist instead.
