Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To keep a prerecorded podcast playing on YouTube Live, loop or advance the media playlist in the encoder or streaming system that sends your broadcast. YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats videos for an individual viewer; it does not restart the media source feeding a live stream. Keep the encoder output connected to YouTube and make sure it always has another item or a holding slate to send.
First, identify which playlist has ended
There are two different kinds of playlists involved:
- A YouTube playlist watched on the site: the viewer can use YouTube’s Loop control to repeat playback. YouTube documents playlist looping on computers and mobile devices, with repeat controls also available on TVs and gaming consoles. That repeats playback for that viewer; it does not control a live broadcast. YouTube: Loop videos or playlists.
- A media playlist feeding your live encoder: this is the source your production system sends to YouTube Live. When its final item ends, the encoder must repeat the playlist, move to another item, or send a holding slate. YouTube receives the encoder’s feed; it does not provide a creator-side control that refills an ended external playlist. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
If viewers report that a live podcast stops after the last episode, check the media source and encoder first—not the viewer-facing YouTube playlist setting.
Keep the prerecorded podcast source running
- Choose the source behavior in your encoder or production system. Enable repeat/loop for the media playlist, set a next item, or arrange a holding slate after the final episode. The exact setting and label depend on the tool; consult its current documentation because YouTube’s encoder guide does not give controls for third-party playlist software.
- Check the end of every item. Confirm that the next item starts as expected and that the playlist does not reach an empty state. If you use a slate between episodes, verify that it includes the audio behavior you want—silence, music you have rights to use, or another permitted source.
- Keep the encoder sending output. A repeating playlist only helps while the production system continues generating and sending the feed to YouTube. Test that playback progresses past the final item and through at least one repeat or transition before scheduling a long broadcast.
YouTube supports both software and standalone hardware encoder workflows; the documentation does not make one type mandatory. Choose based on whether your specific tool supports repeat or next-item behavior, can operate unattended, can be monitored, and fits your budget and technical comfort. YouTube: Live streaming tips.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and locate its stream URL and stream key. Studio labels and layout can change, so confirm the current controls in YouTube’s setup guide.
- Enter the URL and key in the encoder’s YouTube destination or streaming settings, then start the encoder output. YouTube uses the URL and key to receive the feed. Treat the key as confidential: YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
- Check the live preview and stream health in Studio. Confirm that picture and sound reach YouTube, then watch the transition at the end of an item and the start of the next one.
- Monitor the broadcast after it starts. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring the stream; do not assume a successful initial connection means a long-running source will remain healthy. YouTube: Live streaming tips.
Set stream lifecycle controls separately from playlist looping
Auto-start and auto-stop control parts of a live stream’s lifecycle. They do not make an external media playlist repeat when it reaches the end. Decide deliberately whether to use these controls in Studio, and test the outcome with your encoder before relying on them. If you reuse stream settings, check whether that also reuses the stream key; protect it accordingly. YouTube documents these controls and stream settings in its live stream settings guide.
Plan for long broadcasts and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. On streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable, so do not promise viewers unlimited rewind on a continuous broadcast. For a podcast stream intended to run longer, account for that trade-off in how you describe the live experience. Manage live stream settings.

Troubleshoot a stream that stops or goes silent
| What you see | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The live stream ends when the final episode finishes. | The encoder’s media playlist has no repeat, next item, or post-playback source. | Configure a loop, queue another item, or add a holding slate in the production system, then test the ending before going live. |
| The live stream remains open, but playback freezes or goes blank. | The source may have ended while the encoder remains connected, or the transition may not be configured correctly. | Check the encoder’s source/playlist state and its output preview; verify that a next item or slate actually begins. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed. | The stream URL, stream key, destination settings, or encoder output state. | Recheck the URL and key in Studio and the encoder, then start output and confirm the Studio preview. Keep the stream key private. |
| Video continues but audio drops or changes unexpectedly. | The media item, transition, or slate may have different or absent audio. | Inspect the end of each file and the transition source; test the complete audio path during a rehearsal. |
| A long stream’s archive or rewind does not meet viewer expectations. | YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior for very long streams. | Set expectations around the under-12-hour automatic archive guidance and possible DVR limitations beyond 12 hours. |
