For a one-off capture, Chrome Headless can save a webpage as both a screenshot and a PDF from the command line. For recurring captures, multiple URLs, or page-specific waiting and filenames, use Playwright or Puppeteer to automate a browser. Choose full-page capture when the entire scrollable page matters, and check the PDF: it may use print styling rather than the page’s on-screen layout.
What an automated webpage archive preserves
A screenshot records a page’s visual rendering at capture time; a PDF records a printable document representation. Neither is a complete copy of everything a site contains: interactive behavior, content behind login, and some embedded or dynamically loaded material may not appear. Keep the source URL and capture time alongside the files so you can identify what you saved and when. That provenance convention is workflow advice, not a guarantee of archival completeness.
Choose a capture method

There is no documented comparative speed result here, so choose based on the controls and workflow you need rather than assuming one option is faster.
Quick capture with Chrome Headless
Run these commands in a shell where Chrome is installed and available as chrome. Replace the example URL with the page you want to archive. Chrome’s command-line reference documents the screenshot and PDF flags; the PDF is written as output.pdf in the current working directory.

Save a screenshot:

Save a PDF:

Run both commands for the same URL, then check that both files were created in the directory from which you ran Chrome.
Chrome’s --timeout option sets a maximum wait before capture; it does not confirm that scripts, images, or embedded content have finished loading. The browser may capture while the page is still loading. For a specific timeout syntax and supported options, consult the official CLI reference.

Automate repeated captures with Playwright
Playwright is useful when a job must visit several URLs, choose a screenshot extent, or use browser automation code. Its screenshot controls support the visible viewport, an element, or the full scrollable page. The following Node.js example visits one URL, waits for the page load event, and saves a full-page screenshot plus a PDF. Install Playwright and its browser before running it, following the Playwright Page documentation.

For a large page, full-page capture can produce a much taller image than a viewport screenshot. If only one part matters, use Playwright’s locator screenshot controls instead of capturing the entire page. The Playwright CLI also documents screenshot and PDF commands at Screenshots & PDF.
Automate captures and control PDF styling with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s Page.screenshot() and Page.pdf() APIs provide a programmable Chromium workflow. Its PDF method uses print CSS by default. If the on-screen rendering is what you need, emulate screen media before generating the PDF:

Use print media when the printable version is the intended record; use screen media when you want PDF output to follow screen styling. Inspect the result because pagination, colors, and interactive content can differ from what the browser displayed. See the Puppeteer PDF API and screenshot API.
Make recurring archives reliable
Wait for meaningful readiness
A page’s load event or a fixed delay may not mean that the exact content you care about is present. For dynamic pages, use a page-specific readiness condition where possible—for example, wait for a known content selector before capture. A timeout is a ceiling on waiting, not proof of completeness.
Choose the capture extent
- Viewport: captures what fits in the browser window.
- Full page: captures the page’s full scrollable content when the automation tool supports it.
- Element: captures a specific component, such as an article or chart, when supported.
Keep related outputs identifiable
Use a consistent filename convention, such as a date, a sanitized page title, and the file extension: 2026-10-04-example-com.png and 2026-10-04-example-com.pdf. Store the source URL and capture time in a neighboring text or metadata record. Back up the exported files if you need to retain them; capture alone does not establish a retention or backup policy.

No file appears
Check that the command completed, Chrome or the automation browser is installed, and you are looking in the working directory or at the exact path supplied to the save option. Confirm that the process has permission to write there.

The page may still have been loading when capture began. Replace a generic delay with a condition tied to the content you need, and check whether images or embedded material appear only after scrolling. A maximum timeout alone does not establish readiness.

The screenshot cuts off the page
A normal screenshot may capture only the viewport. In Playwright or Puppeteer, request a full-page screenshot when the whole scrollable page is required; use an element screenshot when only a particular section matters.
The PDF looks different from the browser
Puppeteer generates PDFs using print CSS by default. If screen styling is intended, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(), then inspect page breaks and colors.
Some content is missing from either file
Interactive elements, content requiring authentication, or dynamically rendered embeds may not be represented in a static output. Confirm that the content is visible and loaded before capture; do not treat a screenshot or PDF as a complete copy of the website.
Frequently asked questions
Can an automated screenshot and PDF prove what a page said later?
They preserve files showing a particular capture, but the workflow described here does not establish a tamper-proof record or legal evidentiary standard. Keep the original files and record the source URL and capture time if provenance matters.
Can I capture a page that requires signing in?
The commands and examples above do not configure authentication. A page that requires a session may need a browser context with the appropriate authenticated state, subject to the site’s terms and your authorization.
Does PDF capture preserve links and interactive behavior?
A PDF is a document export, not a working copy of the website. Check the resulting file for the content and layout you need; interactive behavior should not be assumed to carry over.
