What to record with a SERP screenshot
Use a short evidence record that identifies both what was searched and when the image was captured. For example:
- Search engine: Google Search
- Query: “how to include the search query and date in SERP screenshots”
- Captured: 2026-10-03 22:55 UTC
- Device: desktop
- Country/location: the actual setting used
- Query language: English
The values above illustrate a format; use the actual values for your capture. Preserve the query exactly, including meaningful punctuation or search operators. If a filename cannot accommodate it, keep the full query in the caption or companion record.
Where to put the query and timestamp
Caption beside the screenshot
A caption immediately outside the image is easy to read in a report and stays associated with the evidence when the image is embedded. Include the exact query and capture timestamp with timezone.

Filename
A compact pattern is engine_device_query_YYYY-MM-DD_HH-MM_TZ.png. For example: google_desktop_best+running+shoes_2026-10-03_22-55_UTC.png. Sanitize characters that the file system does not accept, but retain the unsanitized query in a companion note if the filename changes it.
Companion evidence note
For a set of captures or a report, store the image and its metadata together and link written observations to the original file. A note can include the same fields as the example record, plus a reference or filename for the image.

Keep capture time separate from a result’s date
The timestamp in your evidence record means when you captured the SERP. A date shown beside an individual result is different: Google describes a byline date as its estimate of when that page was published or significantly updated. Label it as the displayed or result byline date if it matters; do not use it as the screenshot’s capture date. If no date appears beside a result, do not infer one from the time you took the screenshot. Google’s byline-date guidance also recommends a prominent user-visible date on the page and consistent structured dates where used.
Capture comparable SERPs without changing the evidence
- Run the exact query in the intended search engine and context. Record the query as entered.
- Capture the page without changing what is visible. Google’s visual elements guide notes that search appearance can vary by device, country, and query language.
- Save the original screenshot, then put labels in a caption, filename, or companion note rather than editing the search interface. Google’s Search screenshot guidance says to show Search naturally and not alter the interface, including by changing autocomplete terms or results.
- Record the capture date, time, and timezone for each image. A date without a timezone can be ambiguous, especially across time zones or near midnight.
- For comparisons, hold constant or document the search engine, exact query, device, country or location, and query language. If signed-in state, personalization, browser configuration, or network location matters to your work, state what you actually used rather than implying a universal control protocol.
A screenshot documents what appeared in one captured context; by itself, it does not establish why a SERP appeared that way or prove a broader ranking trend.

Common labeling mistakes
- Using a result’s byline date as the capture date: Record the actual capture timestamp separately.
- Leaving out the timezone: Use a clear abbreviation such as UTC or an explicit offset.
- Changing the query in the filename without preserving it elsewhere: Keep the exact query in a caption or companion note.
- Editing the result page to add labels: Preserve the interface and put metadata outside the screenshot.
- Comparing images without context: Record device, country or location, and query language along with the search engine and query.
