You can use Audacity to assemble and prepare podcast episodes, but Audacity alone does not send them to YouTube Live. For a continuous stream, prepare the audio in Audacity, then use a compatible streaming encoder to send it to YouTube with that stream’s server URL and stream key. Audacity’s loop control repeats audio during local playback; it is not a YouTube streaming feature.

What Audacity can—and cannot—do

Audacity is useful for arranging episode audio, checking transitions and exporting a finished mix. Its loop-playback control repeats a marked region while you listen locally; press L to enable looping. That control does not transmit audio to YouTube or keep a live stream running.

You need a separate encoder to send audio to YouTube Live. The workflow below uses Audacity for preparation and export, YouTube Studio to create the stream, and an encoder configured with YouTube’s connection details. The exact encoder setup depends on the encoder and your system.

Prepare and export the podcast audio in Audacity

1. Assemble episodes in the intended order

  1. Open Audacity and import the episode audio files you plan to use.
  2. Arrange the episodes in the order you want listeners to hear them. Review the starts and endings, transitions, and any silence between episodes.
  3. Listen through the joins, including the end-to-start transition if you intend the sequence to repeat. Adjust the edit if you hear an unwanted gap, abrupt cut, or overlap.

Audacity’s manual explains how to use loop playback to repeat a loop region while listening. That is useful for checking a transition, but do not mistake local playback for a broadcast loop.

Choose the export scope that matches your plan:

  • Full project mix: export the assembled program.
  • Selected audio: export only the portion you selected.
  • Loop region: export the audio inside the marked loop region.

Audacity’s export dialog offers format and audio options, including mono or stereo, sample rate, and bitrate for supported formats. The appropriate values depend on the encoder and destination workflow; there is no single YouTube-specific Audacity preset established here. Follow the current instructions for your encoder and YouTube Live setup.

Create a YouTube Live stream and connect an encoder

1. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio

Use YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule a stream, following YouTube’s current encoder-streaming instructions. Interface labels can change, so use the current on-screen guidance.

2. Give the encoder YouTube’s connection details

YouTube Help’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” If your encoder offers YouTube as a service, select it and follow its prompts. Otherwise, enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings.

3. Start the encoder and confirm the stream

Start the encoder and check that YouTube receives its signal. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s procedure is to wait for the preview, then select Go live in the Live Control Room. Follow YouTube’s current end-stream procedure when you are finished.

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for a stream lasting 12 hours or longer.

Check copyright before leaving the stream running

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If its systems detect a match, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. YouTube also warns that having a license may not prevent an interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted by the content owner through Content ID.

  • Confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast every episode and any music, clips, or other third-party material in it.
  • If a rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted for the live broadcast.
  • Do not assume that previously published podcast episodes are automatically cleared for continuous live rebroadcast.

Choose a transmission path that fits your setup

The documented encoder workflow supports two connection approaches: select YouTube directly in an encoder that offers it, or manually enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key. The direct option may reduce setup friction if available; the manual option is for encoders that expose connection fields instead. Specific encoder products and their settings are not compared here.

Audacity’s export scope is a separate decision: export the full assembled mix, a selection, or the loop region according to what your encoder needs. The sources do not establish that Audacity alone can feed an endlessly repeating playlist directly to YouTube Live or specify a universal real-time audio-routing setup.

Troubleshoot common problems

The audio loops in Audacity, but YouTube is not live

Cause: Loop playback only repeats audio locally. Fix: Export the audio for your chosen workflow and use a compatible encoder to transmit it to YouTube Live.

YouTube does not receive the encoder signal

Cause: The encoder may not be configured with the server URL and stream key for the stream you created. Fix: Check both values in YouTube Studio and the encoder, then follow the encoder’s current connection instructions. If you selected YouTube as an integrated service, confirm that selection and its prompts instead.

The scheduled stream has a preview but has not started publicly

Cause: A scheduled stream may require a separate go-live action after the preview appears. Fix: In YouTube’s Live Control Room, follow the current procedure and select Go live when the preview is ready.

The stream is interrupted or replaced

Cause: YouTube may have detected third-party material, or the content owner’s Content ID process may require allowlisting. Fix: Check YouTube’s live copyright guidance and resolve the rights or allowlisting issue with the relevant owner.

The archive is missing after a long broadcast

Cause: YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not as a blanket rule for longer streams. Fix: Check YouTube’s current archive guidance for longer broadcasts and plan your own recording or archive process if you need a copy.
