For website screenshots where text and sharp edges must stay crisp, start with PNG or lossless WebP. PNG is the conservative lossless choice; lossless WebP can produce a smaller file while preserving image data. Use lossy WebP only after checking the result at its intended display size, especially around small text, icons, and thin borders. The right choice also depends on what your screenshot API accepts and returns.

PNG vs. WebP for website screenshots

Need Best starting point Why
Faithful text and sharp edges PNG or lossless WebP Both can preserve image data. Lossy compression can blur or add colored fringes around text and edges.
Smaller output without lossy artifacts Lossless WebP MDN Web Docs states that lossless WebP images are typically 26% smaller than the same images in PNG format. That is a general comparison, not a guaranteed saving for a particular capture or API.
Reduced size where some quality loss is acceptable Lossy WebP, with a tested quality setting WebP supports lossy encoding, but inspect the output for artifacts before adopting a setting.
Transparency PNG or WebP Both formats support transparency.
Conservative default behavior PNG, after checking the API Some documented browser capture and export interfaces default to PNG; a hosted screenshot API may behave differently.

MDN’s guidance is to prefer lossless encoding for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art because “blurring and colored fringes around text and sharp edges are very visible.” See the MDN image format guide.

How to choose a format for your use case

Choose PNG for predictable, lossless output

PNG is a sound default when visual fidelity matters more than file size, such as for OCR review, pixel-difference checks, or screenshots that will be inspected closely. It uses lossless compression and supports full alpha transparency. If exact comparison or archiving matters, retain a lossless original even if you also create a smaller derivative.

Choose lossless WebP when size matters and the receiver supports it

Lossless WebP preserves image data while often reducing file size relative to PNG. MDN’s typical 26% comparison is not a promise for any particular page, encoder, or screenshot service: output depends on image content and implementation. Check whether the downstream system can consume WebP before standardizing on it.

Choose lossy WebP only after visual inspection

Lossy compression can lower file size, but it may visibly affect small text, thin borders, icons, and other high-contrast edges. Test representative pages at the dimensions where the image will actually be displayed. A setting that looks acceptable in a large preview may not preserve legibility after scaling.

Check what the screenshot API actually returns

Do not infer encoding from a requested filename or extension. Check the provider’s documentation for accepted format names, quality controls, transparency behavior, and output dimensions, then verify the response’s Content-Type. The media types are image/png and image/webp, respectively, according to MDN.

Defaults are implementation-specific. The WebDriver BiDi screenshot command documents PNG as the default if format is omitted and includes a MIME-type option plus a quality parameter for lossy formats. The Canvas toDataURL() API falls back to PNG when the requested type is omitted or unsupported. Neither behavior establishes the defaults of every hosted screenshot service.

If you control the encoding step, configure the output format explicitly. For example, Sharp’s output documentation describes PNG and WebP output, including a lossless option. That demonstrates encoder capability; it does not show that a particular screenshot API uses Sharp.

A practical format-selection workflow

  1. Confirm support: Check the screenshot API’s documentation for its exact output-format parameter, accepted values, quality behavior, and transparency support.
  2. Capture representative pages: Include text-heavy layouts, small icons, fine borders, images, and any transparent regions your workflow uses.
  3. Compare fidelity at the real display size: Look closely at text and hard edges, or use your normal OCR or image-diff checks.
  4. Compare actual file sizes: Measure the returned files rather than applying MDN’s typical WebP figure as a per-capture estimate.
  5. Verify the response: Inspect the response MIME type and dimensions instead of trusting the filename alone.
  6. Keep a lossless original when fidelity is critical: This is useful for archival comparison, OCR-sensitive review, and pixel-difference testing.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP; check the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the current request options and output behavior. A cURL request for a WebP capture looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should screenshot APIs return PNG or WebP?

Either can be appropriate: PNG is a conservative lossless choice, while lossless WebP can reduce file size. Confirm the API’s supported formats and check the returned MIME type.

Does WebP always make screenshot files 26% smaller?

No. MDN Web Docs describes lossless WebP as typically 26% smaller than the same images in PNG format, but that is not a guarantee for every capture or encoder.

Is lossy WebP suitable for screenshots?

It can be, if a smaller file is worth a possible loss in detail. Check text, thin borders, and icons at the intended display size before relying on it.
