How to take a screenshot of a GST portal error
- Open the relevant GST portal page and reproduce the issue if it is safe to do so. Do not risk submitting a payment, return, or other transaction just to capture evidence.
- Make the browser window wide enough that labels, status messages, and the error text are readable. Position the page so the relevant details and enough surrounding context are visible.
- Use your computer’s built-in screenshot tool to capture the visible screen. For a long page, take a few overlapping screenshots or use a browser full-page capture, then check that the text remains legible at normal reading size. These are practical capture suggestions, not GSTN requirements.
- Open the saved image and inspect it before sharing. Crop irrelevant surroundings and permanently cover passwords, OTPs, financial or personal details, and other taxpayers’ information that is not needed to explain the problem. Make sure redactions are opaque in the exported image.
- Write down what action led to the error, when it happened, and the filing period or reference number if it is safe and relevant to include. State what you expected to happen. Never include a password or OTP in the complaint.
GSTN’s login manual describes credential, CAPTCHA, and OTP steps, so login or authentication screens can expose sensitive information if captured carelessly: GSTN Manual: Logging in and Managing Username and Password.
Choose a capture that is readable and relevant

Where to upload a GST portal screenshot
- Go to the GSTN Self Service Portal and use its complaint or report-an-issue route. The portal says users can explain issues and upload screenshots of pages where the problem occurred.
- Follow the live form’s instructions and complete the requested complaint details. If the portal’s FAQs do not resolve the issue, its instructions indicate that you can proceed to lodge a complaint.
- Attach the reviewed, redacted image and submit the complaint. Check the form itself for current accepted file types and size limits; the cited official pages do not establish universal current limits.
- Keep a secure copy of what you submitted and the complaint or ticket reference for follow-up.

Use official manuals for task-specific portal steps
If the problem concerns a particular filing or portal workflow rather than a general error, consult GSTN’s official help modules for that task. The GSTN Welcome Kit for New Taxpayers points to manuals and FAQs with screenshots for payments, return filing, refund applications, appeals, offline tools, ITC forms, and ledgers. Portal screens can change, so use the relevant current help material rather than assuming an older screenshot exactly matches today’s interface.
Troubleshoot common screenshot and complaint problems
- The error text is too small: widen the browser window, increase page zoom modestly, and recapture. Verify that the text is readable in the saved image rather than only on your monitor.
- The relevant details span a long page: use a full-page capture only if it remains readable, or take overlapping screenshots that show the relevant sequence.
- The image includes a secret or unrelated taxpayer details: do not upload it as-is. Redact the sensitive area in an image editor, export a flattened copy, and reopen that copy to confirm the redaction cannot be removed or read through.
- The form rejects the attachment: consult the live form’s instructions for supported format and size, then export or resize a copy accordingly. The official pages cited here do not state current universal attachment limits.
- You cannot find a complaint route: start at the GSTN Self Service Portal and follow its current help or report-issue links. Portal notices and routes may change.
- The issue concerns a particular filing action: check the corresponding official manual or FAQ listed through GSTN’s Welcome Kit before trying the action again.
