Generate a full-page screenshot with Puppeteer
The following example uses the current Puppeteer screenshot workflow documented in the official Screenshots guide. It saves a PNG in the process’s current working directory. This is an illustrative starting point; a site’s deferred content or overlays may require additional waits or interactions.

}Install Puppeteer in your project before running the example. Use an ES module context, or adapt the imports to your project’s module setup. The finally block closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails, which helps avoid leaving a browser process running.
- Choose the viewport. The example sets a 1440-by-900 viewport before navigation so the page renders against the intended desktop dimensions. Use dimensions that match the report’s intended layout; for mobile output, choose a mobile-sized viewport instead. Puppeteer advises setting the viewport before navigation when it matters because changing device-like dimensions can surprise some sites. See the Page API.
- Navigate to the page.
waitUntil: 'networkidle2'is the wait condition used in Puppeteer’s example sequence. It is not proof that every application is finished: lazy-loaded sections, animations, consent dialogs, and other site-specific behavior can need a selector-based wait or an interaction. - Capture the page.
fullPage: truerequests a screenshot of the full page rather than just the visible viewport. The ScreenshotOptions reference listsfalseas the default, so specifytrueexplicitly for a report capture. - Check the file. Inspect the saved image for missing below-the-fold content, overlays, or unexpected responsive layout. The screenshot API does not guarantee that every site’s visual state is ready when a particular navigation wait finishes.
Choose the right image settings
The screenshot options let you control the output and capture region. Select only the settings that match the report’s needs.

See the full ScreenshotOptions interface for option details. If repeatability matters, record the URL, viewport dimensions, wait strategy, and screenshot settings with the report-generation configuration; that recordkeeping is a workflow practice, not a Puppeteer feature.
Wait for content that appears after navigation
A page can continue changing after its initial document loads. A network-idle condition is only a starting point, not a universal signal that a page is visually complete. For pages with deferred content, wait for a meaningful element or perform the interaction that reveals the content before taking the screenshot.

- Lazy-loaded sections or images: check whether they appear in the resulting image. If not, use the page’s own loading behavior and an appropriate site-specific wait before capture.
- Consent overlays or popups: decide whether the report is meant to show them. If it is not, handle the overlay in your automation before capture rather than assuming navigation will remove it.
- Animations or rotating content: choose a stable point or page state for the capture and inspect the output for inconsistent frames.
- Repeatable reports: keep the viewport and readiness strategy fixed across runs, then compare representative output images to spot page changes.
Puppeteer’s documentation describes the screenshot API and example navigation sequence, but does not establish a single readiness condition that works for every site.
When a PDF is a better report deliverable
A full-page screenshot produces one continuous image. Use page.pdf() when the report should be a paginated document with paper sizing, margins, page ranges, or print-oriented layout. Puppeteer’s Page API documents PDF generation as using print CSS media by default. If the PDF should reflect screen styling, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf().

The PDFOptions interface documents controls including paper format, margins, scale, backgrounds, and page ranges. PDF generation also modifies colors for printing by default; Puppeteer points to -webkit-print-color-adjust when exact colors are needed. A PDF is therefore not simply another encoding of the full-page image: choose based on whether reviewers need one continuous visual capture or a page-oriented document.
Capture a single element instead of the whole page
If the report needs a chart, card, or other component rather than the complete document, Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows capturing an element. The element helper scrolls the target into view when necessary. This is useful when the report needs a focused visual, but it does not replace a full-page capture when surrounding page context matters. See the Screenshots guide.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- The screenshot stops at the viewport: set
fullPage: true; its default is false according to the options reference. - The layout has the wrong desktop or mobile shape: set the intended viewport before calling
page.goto(). Puppeteer notes that some sites may not expect viewport changes; see the Page API. - Images or sections are missing: do not assume
networkidle2guarantees application readiness. Add a page-specific wait or interaction and verify the new output. - The image format is not what you expected: set
typeexplicitly, or ensure the file extension inpathmatches the desired format. The extension can determine the inferred type. - A quality setting has no effect:
qualityis not applicable to PNG. Use a format that supports the option if quality adjustment is required. - The image contains unwanted surroundings: use the documented
clipoption for a defined region, or capture a specific element when only one component is needed. - Automation appears blocked while capturing: Puppeteer documents that screenshot work can affect coordination with page lifecycle operations in a browser context: operations such as creating or closing pages wait for a screenshot to finish. See Page.screenshot().
- Navigation to an existing PDF fails in headless shell mode: Puppeteer’s Page API warns that headless shell mode does not support navigating to a PDF document. This concerns opening an existing PDF URL; it is distinct from generating a PDF from a rendered page with
page.pdf().
