If a Puppeteer full-page screenshot clips, misplaces, or repeats a sticky header, first check whether you need a whole-document image or a single-element capture. For a document, try page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }), then inspect any clip and captureBeyondViewport settings. The full-page option requests a full-page screenshot; it does not guarantee that fixed or sticky elements will appear where you expect.

Choose the right capture target

Capture the whole document

Use fullPage: true when the goal is a screenshot of the page rather than just the visible viewport:

const screenshot = await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true });

Puppeteer documents fullPage as taking a screenshot of the full page. That describes the capture extent, not a promise about how a page’s fixed or sticky elements will be positioned in the resulting image. See the ScreenshotOptions reference.

Capture one element

If you need only the header or another specific element, use ElementHandle.screenshot() instead of treating the whole document as the target:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
const header = await page.$('header');
if (!header) throw new Error('Header element not found');
const screenshot = await header.screenshot();

Puppeteer’s screenshot guide says this method tries to scroll a hidden element into view by default. That makes it a different capture goal from a full-page screenshot. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide.

Check clipping options in the actual call

Review the exact screenshot options your code passes, including whether it supplies a clip. The current reference lists captureBeyondViewport separately and documents its default as false when there is no clip and true when a clip is supplied. Do not assume that a clipped capture behaves like a full-document capture; compare your call with the documented options at Puppeteer’s ScreenshotOptions reference.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

As a first diagnostic, remove an unnecessary clip when you intend to capture the entire page and explicitly request fullPage: true. If you do need a clip, verify its coordinates and dimensions against the intended region, and check how captureBeyondViewport is set rather than relying on a default that may differ with a clip.

Determine whether the header is clipped or repositioned

A header can appear wrong even when the screenshot includes the document: CSS positioning and the way the screenshot is assembled affect where fixed and sticky elements appear. Inspect the header’s position styles and establish whether your capture method scrolls the page, changes the viewport, or stitches multiple captures together.

Puppeteer issue #5080 describes a historical change associated with Puppeteer v2.0.0 and Chromium viewport clipping. The discussion notes that earlier behavior could place fixed-position banners in the middle of some full-page screenshots. It also explains the trade-offs in two common workarounds: changing viewport size can alter layouts that depend on viewport units or fixed positioning, while scrolling and stitching can duplicate fixed or sticky elements and require additional capture work. This issue is useful context, not a specification of current behavior: Puppeteer issue #5080.

Use viewport resizing or stitching cautiously

Resizing the viewport

A larger viewport may change responsive breakpoints, viewport-relative units, and the behavior or position of fixed elements. Compare the page layout before and after resizing; a screenshot that includes more content is not necessarily a faithful image of the original viewport layout.

  • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.

Scrolling and stitching

Capturing overlapping viewport sections and joining them can help with some capture workflows, but fixed or sticky elements may appear in more than one section. Stitching also means more capture work. If you use it, inspect the seams and repeated header areas rather than assuming the combined image represents one uninterrupted browser view.

How to troubleshoot the cutoff

  1. Confirm the target. Use page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) for the document, or ElementHandle.screenshot() for one element.
  2. Inspect the options. Check for an explicit clip and review captureBeyondViewport in the actual call against its documented defaults.
  3. Inspect header positioning. Check whether the header is fixed or sticky and whether the capture process scrolls, resizes, or stitches the page.
  4. Compare methods against the original layout. If trying viewport resizing or stitching, check for changed viewport-based layout and repeated header regions.
  5. Verify version-specific workarounds. Do not treat old issue comments as current supported API guidance.

Historical Chromium flag: verify before relying on it

A comment dated January 11, 2021 in the issue discussion reports using the Chromium launch flag --blink-settings=mainFrameClipsContent=false to restore older behavior. This is a historical, version-dependent report, not a current documented Puppeteer option or a generally established fix. The current ScreenshotOptions reference does not list it as a supported API setting. If you investigate it, verify compatibility with the exact Puppeteer and Chromium versions you run and test the resulting layout; do not assume it applies to your setup. See the issue comment and discussion alongside the current options reference.
